Summary: The triumvirate.
Review: "Crimes of the Heart" is characterized by three excellent performances by three excellent leading-ladies: Diane Keaton, Jessica Lange and Sissy Spacek, who form an agreeable triumvirate (sp.). It's a heart-wrenching, funny, touching girlpower movie basically.
Although there are three leads in the movie, Sissy Spacek was the only one to garner any award attention, as she won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar. This is most likely because it's difficult to decide which of the three actresses is the best, and the Academy wound up splitting all the votes, with Sissy just HAPPENING to get a majority, and alas in 1986 we were left with Jane Fonda and Kathleen Turner getting Oscar noms instead of Diane and/or Jessi. Not that that's a bad thing ...
Anyhow, "Crimes of the Heart" commits no crime. It'll be a crime if you don't see this movie.

Summary: notable for great performances
Review: All three actresses, especially Keaton and Spacek, are perfect and their performances outstanding. Supporting cast, especially Tess Harper, great as well. The screenplay, aside from a few weak misfires, sparkles (though it wouldn't without the talents of the stars). HOWEVER, this movie is, for me, a perfect example of a TERRIBLE choice of musical score/soundtrack. It is SO intrusive, so dated (with its schmaltzy strings and that awful stereotypical 80's soundtrack SAXOPHONE) and it takes some wonderfully subtle scenes and squashes them. Frankly, this movie would've worked well with a few old songs (as in the scenes with Meg and Doc), or something simple and much less smothering. There a scenes with no music at all that are so strong. I guess this is quibbling, though. Otherwise, it's a great feel-good movie, for a movie the subjects it features. There are quotable quotes and scenes that will make you look at certain everyday things in a whole new way.

Review: Bethe Henley's Pulitzer winning comedy about three Mississippi sisters who come together when the youngest is charged with attempted murder should have made it to the screen with considerable success; it is instead just barely short of being a total embarassment. Director Beresford's handling of the material is about as about as graceful as a hippo trying to pick up a pea; to say he lacks any feel (or even a basic comprehension of) the material would be a profound understatement. Diane Keeton--a New York-type actress if ever there was one--is horrifically miscast as a smalltown Southern spinster; Jessica Lang and Sissy Spacek fare only a bit better. As is typical of a Hollywood movie set in the deep south, all the actors use completely different Southern accents and none of them sound anything like the accent you'd actually find in Hazehurst, Mississippi. Equally typical, the outdoor shots were apparently filmed almost anywhere in the south EXCEPT Mississippi, so no, it doesn't look like that either. The cast really works its collective butt off to bring some life to this film, and from time to time Henley's story comes magically to life... but each time the spark fizzles and dies. See the play instead. Or read the play! Or buy a copy of STEEL MAGNOLIAS! But give this film version of CRIMES OF THE HEART a miss!

Summary: Faithful to the Play.
Review: CRIMES OF THE HEART is a movie that is successfully adapted from the play by the same name. The film revolves around a couple days in the lives of the three Magrath sisters: Lenny, Meg, and Babe. Babe is just released from jail after having shot her husband because she "didn't like his looks". Meg returns home to Hazelhurst, Missiissippi upon learning that Babe's in trouble, and Lenny is a basketcase who holds the family together. The movie has a great cast with some very fine serio-comic acting. The direction is superb and the writing full of wit. Overall a charming film. However, this is a chick flick and if you're a guy, you may only want to watch this on a date.

Review: Diane Keaton, Jessica Lange and Sissy Spacek are great as the mismatched MaGrath sisters in the screen version of Beth Henley's play CRIMES OF THE HEART. Babe MaGrath Botrelle (Sissy Spacek) just shot her abusive husband, Lenny MaGrath (Diane Keaton) has never even had a man, and Meg MaGrath (Jessica Lange) can't hold one down. Yes, the MaGrath sisters have the Midas-touch when it comes to successful relationships - not! The film is a delightful vignette of sisterly life in the sleepy South, filled with gorgeous supporting characters like cousin Chick (Tess Harper) and Doc (Sam Shepard). The scene where Babe tries to hang herself is hilarious, as is the scene where Lenny chases Chick out of her "damn house" to the amusement of Babe. All in all, this oft-forgotten film is a rare little gem of a comedy, one that needs to be re-discovered.

Review: I really love the three leading actresses in this movie. They are always great. However, Diane Keaton is the best among the three, although Sissy Spacek got the part which is the center of the movie. I really like the way they handle their charactors. One of the review for this movie has the comment from the writer that Diane Keaton looks pathetic. Well, she should look that way because Lenny (Keaton's charactor) is a pathetic, highly nervous person with extremely low confident in herself. If anyone would say that Keaton's performance was poor because she is so like her charactor, I think that person should review his/her ability to review the movie again (may be she/he should give only 1/2 out of 20 to herself/himself)

Summary: One of my all-time favorites!
Review: I'm so surprised to read a bad review of this movie. I love it and have watched it many, many times. As wacky as the characters are, they feel like people I could know or people I'd like to know. They're endearing. The movie makes you laugh and cry, and like someone else said, there are lines that just stick with you. "I've had a bad day ... a really bad day," Babe says after trying to kill herself three different ways. Somehow this is funny! And the music? I loved it! Every time I watch this movie, I look forward to the theme song and that saxaphone music, especially the part where Babe plays the sax (she's really bad!) in her band costume. It's hilarious! Buy this movie. You will enjoy it and feel closer to your family because of the closeness of these sisters.
