Summary: Surprisingly Good
Review: In spite of the ending that you can see coming a mile away, Drumline is a good film addressing lessons of life and the willingness to change. It is beautifully filmed, wonderfully acted and masterfully edited.

It is the story of Devon (Nick Cannon) very talented high-school drummer who over estimates his ability and undervalues the willingness to submit to authority in the areas of humility, teachability, etc. As the story develops, the only thing faster than Devon's drumsticks is his knack for causing trouble.

Where the movie earns is stars is sending a clear message that sheer talent without discipline isn't enough. Dr. Aaron Lee, (Orlando Jones) the bandmaster shows character and intergrity especially when he makes the difficult choice of cutting Devon when Lee discovers that his star drummer cannot read music. Lee teaches Devon that developing his talent through self-discipline will benefit him as a percussionist. As a result, Devon comes to the self-realization that he must change his thinking and "forge his craft" in order to become a complete musician.

Speaking of change, I like the message of change potentially happening at any age as well. Dr. Lee is man a rightfully proud man who prefers technically excellent music and eschews what is popular or comtemporary. Though the musician side of him has high standards, his job description is to entertain crowds and is pressured into makes changes accordingly. Even though there were issues of livelihood at stake, you want to believe that the changes came on Lee's terms as an artist: his musical scope needing to expand.

Jones and Cannon are convincing and brilliant. I'm not a fan of the screenplay for Lee's decision of bringing Devon back on the band after earlier agreed that Devon would be back the next academic year. Ultimately it reduces the Dr. Lee as one who bends his standards whenever it suits. The movie commendably built Dr. Lee as consistantly modeling good character but when it boiled down to winning, Lee sends Devon a mixed message. It would of been refreshing to lose the competition at the end while giving it their all, but at least intergrity stays in tact.

However, given the story and pressure Lee was under it's difficult to blame him. In the end, having to produce to the university president's expectations wins out so in a sense his decision is realistic. Unfortunately, such politics are realistic and in this case art imitates life I suppose.

One aspect of the movie has me intrigued, is how extreme marching bands practices are portrayed in this film. I have no doubt that they are regimented, but the personalities of student leaders aren't exactly benign. Without any first hand experience, the movie may not do the real practices any justice. "Drumline" is a good, clean movie I'm confident most will enjoy.

Summary: GOOD ACTING DEBUT FOR NICK CANNON
Review: A BROOKLYN KID [NICK CANNON] GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL WITH A DRUMMING SCHOLARSHIP TO ATLANTA A&T UNIVERSITY, BUT WITH ONLY ONE PROBLEM, HE CAN'T READ MUSIC, BUT DESPITE THAT, HE STILL RISES THROUGH THE BAND RANKS. FUNNY AND DRAMATIC. IT'S A GOOD MOVIE THAT SHOWS THAT THERE'S MORE TO BEING IN A BAND THAN JUST PLAYING MUSIC. A VERY GOOD MOVIE WITH A VERY GOOD SCRIPT. THE SCENE WHERE THE BAND PLAYS ''FLIGHT OF THE BUMBLE BEE'' IS AN INSTANT MUST SEE. AND ORLANDO JONES IS GREAT AS THE BAND DIRECTOR WHO HAS AN OLD SCHOOL MENTALITY. YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THIS MOVIE.

Summary: Lots of Energy
Review: Even though the story line was weak and predictable, the marching band scenes are worth the price of this DVD..This is the first film that shows how talented these young brothers and sisters in marching bands really are... Well done...

Summary: Crisp wonderfull real life story and film .....
Review: Unfortunately, today, one must go off the beaten track to get away from ninjas... witches ... cops ... lawyers etc etc kind of movie where you pretty well know what the ending is before it starts AND the only lesson you'll remember is 'darn that was expensive ' should have watched TV at home ....

Drumline is a story about a talented young man who has been told to make the most of his talent no matter what .. what they didn't tell him is that one has to work your talent inside a complex society .. no good if you are the best drummer in the word if you don't have a great band to play with ....

Although I would lave to have ssen more of the drumline sequences at games the movie has just enough on it's sound track to make it very memorable ...

This may not be the greatest movie I ever saw and it may not be an epic BUT this movie is fun .. remember that .. a fun movie WOW ....

Summary: This film gave me a new respect for college bands
Review: This 2002 film is a "feel good" film about the coming of age of a young black drummer, played by Nick Cannon. He's part of a band in a Harlem high school and is so good at what he does that he gets a full scholarship to a Atlanta A&T, a black university in the South. The school is fictional but the band politics are not and he is soon goes though his own coming-of-age experience as he learns about competition and teamwork and growing up. In this school the band is everything, and when he and an slightly older classmate, played by Leonard Roberts, lock horns, there is conflict. Under the hands of the wise teacher, played by Orlando Jones, they eventually come to an understanding in spite of the bumps of learning a lesson in the sport of life. There's a pretty girl involved too, played by Zoe Saldana.

Best of all are the band sequences, with full costumes and choreography. The acting was uniformly good, and the script moved at a brisk pace. I did enjoy it even though the plot was a little simple for my personal taste and targeted towards a teen-age audience.

Summary: God bless the band!
Review: This movie was wonderful in that it showed what I have always known from growing up in a musical family -- being a part of a band and learning an instrument takes dedication and REAL teamwork. If only every marching band out there would get the respect during a game that was shown in this movie. As Nick Cannon's character discovers, every band member is a hard-working individual who works together for the group. It's too bad that sports teams in the real world get most of the glory during these events, because every marching band deserves it so much more!!

Summary: The Best Movie of the Year
Review: This was a great movie. The bands were so good and I liked how the movie had all the gangsta talkin and actin, but the movie still had a great moral. People said this movie was stupid, but they were dead wrong.
