Review: Maybe this movie can be looked at as a campy film of the eighties, but it always puts me in a good mood. The scenery is lovely and makes you want to visit the island of Santorini,i love it and enjoy the way the movie does not take itself too seriously, and how it was probably a blast for the actors to make this movie that explores the beauty of personal freedom and
the joy of being uninhibited.

Review: Ok.The plot is predictable. The acting borders on the atrocious. The dialogue is awful. But somehow I love this movie. Could be the "menage a trois" fantasy which is the center of the movie. Could be the truly beautiful Greek scenery. More likely it is the presence of one of the most beautiful and enigmatic actresses ever to grace the screen...Valerie Quennessen. This French actress, who unfortunately died in a car crash in 1989, had a simple, down to earth beauty and charisma that was truly amazing.As for the DVD, the transfer is excellent. This movie has never looked so crisp and beautiful. The transfer is pan and scan. As for special features, there's a theatrical trailer full of nudity, which is cool. But there's nothing elese. No liner notes. No director's commentary. It would have been nice to hear the behind the scenes story on this movie. But I guess Peter Gallager and Darryll Hannah don't look at this flick as their finest hour. Still, this is a good buy. I just wish Paramount would now release, the only other Valerie Quennessen movie, "French Postcards"

Summary: NO! NO! NO!
Review: Okay - perhaps it's just because I've never been to Greece for a summer vacation, but I just don't *get* this movie or why there are actually people out there who have enjoyed it. The plot of this movie is so preposterous that the only reason I kept watching until the end was because I was hoping for some twist in the storyline that would salvage the film. Alas, the ending of the film was even worse than what I was anticipating halfway through. (C'mon - Lina on a moped at the end? "Yes, I'd like my movie with extra extra cheese, please.") The only thing that made this film barable (barely!) was the scenery of the Greek Isles - which I admit was captured beautifully. (There's a lot of good early 80's-style nudity too if you like that kinda thing.) As for the story and the characters... The worst flick I've seen in a while.

Summary: IDIOTS!
Review: One of the most appealling features of this lightweight but charming movie is the lovely cinematography of Santorini. So why didn't they release this on DVD in widescreen??? Instead they cut off nearly half the visuals to make it full-screen. Idiots! Had it even occurred they might do this, I would have checked the aspect ratio of the DVD and I wouldn't have bothered to buy it. Rather, I would have waited and hoped for a decent version to eventually come along... which is what I doing now anyway.

Summary: Good music, great scenery and every man's fantasy
Review: One of the very few movies that puts a positive spin on open relationships, Summer Lovers is a must-see for anyone open-minded enough to enjoy it and for those who want to live vicariously for 98 minutes. This movie abounds with love scenes, hits from the early '80s, nights out on the town in Santorini and very good dialog about life, love, sexual attraction and relationships.

Summary: Incredibly Overrated!
Review: Somebody please tell me why this predictable, boring movie gets such high reviews from so many people! Is it the plot? Can't be, since you can anticipate every part of the movie, it is so cliche-driven. Is it the nudity (none from Daryl; sorry, guys)? That doesn't really save it. Is it the scenery? Well, the Greek island it is set on is incredibly beautiful. In fact, it is the best part of the movie. Might as well watch it with the sound off, so you don't have to listen to the dreadful dialogue. But even the scenery is ruined on the DVD version of this movie, since it is in 4:3 format, and the video quality is so bad. Fans of DVDs be warned - stay away from this poorly done disk! If life is going by too fast for you, you might want to watch this - it will be the longest 90 minutes of your life!

Summary: lighthearted and fun
Review: Summer Lovers is a fun little film about a young couple on vacation in the Greek islands. Michael (Peter Gallagher) and Cathy (Daryl Hannah) are on a Summer vacation after college graduation and his father's death, and are apparently headed for engagement and marriage. Michael encounters and is uncontrollably drawn to Lina (Valerie Quennessen), a French Archeologist working at a dig nearby. What follows is a light but well handled exploration of the complications that ensue when passion and love collide with society's rules and expectations. What could have easily ended up as just another shallow movie sex romp actually does some justice to the theme of adults exploring new relationship territory and the power of overcoming one's barriers. Although lighter and not in the same league as "Same Time Next Year," it is still a good movie and a fun but somewhat thoughtful look at unusual relationships. It does not follow the expected Hollywood pattern, and I like that. (Can't say more without spoiling it.) I disagree that it is bubble-brained and predictable. The story isn't any sillier than the plot of Casablanca or the Wizard of Oz, just not quite the same caliber. The story is well told, dialog is okay, and the characters are believable. The scenery is gorgeous and well photographed, and the film is much more enjoyable on DVD than it was when I first saw it on cable and on VHS. The details in the scenes and sound track are much better. I caught much more subtlety in the photography on the DVD. I loved the footage of the beautiful whitewashed Greek buildings and the ocean. There are nude beach scenes and some other nudity, but it is relevant to the time, location, and situations of the characters. This is a love story about sexy young people on vacation in the Mediterranean, after all. The sound track is late 70s to early 80s pop (Prince, Tina Turner, Pointer Sisters, etc.), but good songs that drive the story. There are no real extras on the DVD, and I would have enjoyed at least some commentary from the actors or director about the film and its theme, shooting on Santorini, etc. There was apparently a "Making of" documentary done for TV, and that would be a nice addition. Since Valerie Quennessen is dead, something extra about her would be nice. I agree that she is the most interesting in the cast. Her passing is indeed sad. (She also had a small role in Conan The Barbarian, by the way.) I especially like one line where Hannah remarks that she had a dream where she was a mermaid. This movie was released in 1982 and Splash (with Hannah as a mermaid!) in 1984. Interesting. This is one of those films I watch every so often to refresh my attitude and have a light but not completely meaningless escape. Hey, not every movie has to be Doctor Zhivago or Schindler's List to be good to watch. Beauty comes in many forms, and should be enjoyed.

Review: Summer lovers is a wierd movie with twisted love and wierd sex and threesomes all over the place. SEX is all over the place in this movie. I am really suprised they let a movie be made like this years ago even for the early 80's this is pretty morbid. This movie is morally wrong everything in it is bad. This has to be one the darkest wierdest movies I have seen in a while. The movie is in Santorini and all these actors are turning each other on while on vacation and having really messed up sex. I could not even eat after watching this is was so gross! There is even some gross guy near the end of the movie who is like 18 years old having sex with a 70 year old woman. The movie is shot is some ugly loft house made of stone it looks like a typical house just mainly built for having nasty sex. The ending was pretty stupit too if you watch this and are pretty much normal you will probably feel that something is seriously wrong with the love in this film.

Review: SUMMER LOVERS provides an interesting take on the exploits of an unmarried couple vacationing where the swingers swing. Daryl Hannah shows just what happens when a woman gives it up to a man without a wedding ring (or even an engagement ring): her boyfriend (Peter Gallagher) takes even further advantage! He does nothing to hide his attraction to a single woman they meet; he beds her down and then brings Daryl in to make it a threesome. Gals, what won't you do to please a man? Daryl Hannah's character demonstrates a tickling fetish. At one point, she ties the boyfriend down, arms over head, and tickles his underarms. She should have socked him in the face while she had the chance. SUMMER LOVERS came out right before AIDS became a household world. H.I.V., R.I.P., young people who see SUMMER LOVERS as a fantasy instead of a warning.
