Rating: Summary: Hype becomes Art Review: Jean-Michel Basquiat laughed himself all the way to the bank ... er -- his heroin connexion.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful. Simply beautiful. Review: I must say that Jeffrey Wright gives the most amazing performances I have ever seen in ANY film. I couldn't take my eyes off him. A must-see film, and an incredible performance.
Rating: Summary: A must see Review: I'm often sceptacle of underground movies...but my view changed after seeing this amazing and intruiging movie on the Sundance Channel. It was excellent, particularly the way the director used symbolism. You really have to "read into" the movie in order to understand it. It was awesome
Rating: Summary: art art is but not too samo art falls down with art Review: Really excellent film. This is my sons favorite artist and now I see why. Order the book about his painting. It is wonderful. Can I buy the soundtrack?
Rating: Summary: Another Artist Fallen. Review: Whoever the actor that played Basquait is, he did an incredilble job. I didn't even know that was David Bowie as Andy Warhol! What a trip! This film is excellent in all aspects of filmmaking. It captures the tortured soul of a diluted artist, a timeless tale told again and again. In this film it is executed beautifully, totally connecting you to Basquait and exposing the world in which he lives.
Rating: Summary: "Welcome to the Terrordome: The dark side of hybridity" Review: A wonderful movie about the short life of a talented, thoughtful, kind and lonely African in America. My summary line sums it up for me(title of an article written about Basquait). This movie was about race, identity(or lack thereof) and loneliness played out in the artworld. Basquiat's life is like that of so many people of color in America. The contradiction of America in all it's splendor. I give it 10 stars!
Rating: Summary: Heaping pile of doo doo Review: If the point of the movie was to show how sick and disoriented people become rich and famous, then the movie succeeded. However, it is difficult to enjoy the movie because you can't identify with the characters. They're just too damn bizarre.
Rating: Summary: *****Beautifull***** Review: I love this movie. I need to buy it soon, seeing as how I've already spent around 20 bucks just renting it. I think that every moment of this film is meaningful and moving. The actors are so amazing, the soundtrack fits the film amazingly, and made me respect and love the works of Jean-Michel Basquiat. A truly powerfull movie. I hope Julian makes another movie someday.
Rating: Summary: Bowie and Wright superbly play their roles Review: catches Basquiat's alienation from the white art world. Part in restaurant is powerful. The scene when Basquiat is mourning Warhol's death is tender, believable, gripping. The viewer is able to see the inner turmoil of Basquiat- as an artist and as a black man. This film shows the painter's creativity and resourcefulness. Being an ardent admirer of Picasso, the opening scene with the young Basquiat and his mother standing before Guernica is simply beautiful, especially the trademark crown glowing on his head. As a hopeful young artist his life is inspiring.
Rating: Summary: SAFE,PLUSH...HE,THINK Review: the directorial debut of julian schnabel is a gem of a flick, illuminating the skyrocketing to fame of 1980s graffiti artist, jean-michel basquiat. all-star cast makes for an interesting art flick.
