Summary: Terrific !
Review: A must-have film for fans of REH. I have the wide-screen laserdisc and will buy a WS DVD the minute it's available. D'Onofrio is fantastic but the movie belongs to Zellweger who will never be better! My thanks to the filmmakers for producing this heart-breaking valentine to small-town dreamers -- against what must have been great commercial odds. A real gem!

Summary: A study of character
Review: Excellent movie. In this day of violent, sex ridden cinema it was refreshing to see a film that penatrated into the thoughts of two real people. This true story compared the minds of two different people, a "straight" school teacher and aspiring writer with an unusual genius ("Bob"), both born and raised in rural Texas. Bob is the creator of "Conan the Barbarian" and dreams in a world of Violence, Sex and Adventure. How this make-believe world collides with rural Texas, real world values and their love makes for a very deep, moving film I will never forget.

Summary: Wonderful movie that did not get enough credit
Review: I wanted to see the movie after hearing Renee Zellweger say she was in it on the Rosie O'Donnell show (where she was actually there for Jerry Maguire). I found it in the video store and rented it immediately, and I fell in love with the movie. I thought the acting was wonderful and I thought that the stars had a chemistry about them. I also found the movie somewhat helpful, as I am also an aspiring writer, and I loved to hear both their insights on writing. I've recently ordered the book that the movie was based on and can't wait until I recieve it so I can read it!

Summary: One of the great film love stories
Review: This is the best film I've ever seen about the nature of creativity. It's also a great, though tragic, love story, one that will stay with you long after you've seen it. It is that rarest of things: an unsentimental Hollywood romance that has the power to touch viewers deeply without making them feel used afterward. It also contains a performance by D'Onofrio that is worthy of mid-period Brando. A tragically overlooked masterpiece.

Summary: A moving, exceptionally well-acted, nearly flawless movie .
Review: This film tells the unforgettable, yet little known story of schoolteacher Novalyne Price's relationship with Robert E. Howard, creator of Conan the Barbarian and one of the greatest of the "pulp" fiction writers. Their characters are brought to life with exceptional dignity and skill by Renee Zellweger and Vincent D'Onofrio. Their performances transcended the characters and they became, for me, Novalyne and Robert. I have seldom seen a movie that draws me in as much as this one; watching it once is not enough, and it becomes better with every viewing. The romance between the two is complex and continually frustrated by Robert's inability to simply accept Novalyne's love for him, his bizarre outbursts, and unnatural closeness to his mother. The end of their story is very painful but beautifully enacted by Renee Zellweger; I still cry every time I see it. Her portrayal of Novalyne is of a young woman full of inner strength; spunky, outspoken yet very tender and feminine. And Vincent D'Onofrio brings just the right combination of intensity and vulnerability to the role of Robert. A heartbreaking, wonderful story that deserves to be seen. Hopefully more of its kind will continue to be made.

Summary: Wonderful.
Review: It's a shame that this film did not enjoy a long and profitable initial run in theaters. I finally got a copy on tape and I must say that D'Onofrio and Zelleweger have both turned in exceptional performances. You have to wonder if D'Onofrio was chanelling old Two Gun Bob--his performance was that powerful. This film was also one of the most emotionally intense films I've seen in many years.

Summary: Piercing in its depth of feeling and honesty.
Review: This is a truly incredible movie. Heartfelt, and wrenching, I was riveted to my seat with the emotional tension so well portrayed. Rarely does a film so honestly express the dynamics of love and friendship and the sacrifices one must often make to maintain individual dignity and passions.

Summary: A romance for all times
Review: Vincent D'Onofrio is an excellent actor who makes the role of Robert E. Howard so realistic that you have to remember that he is an actor. The story was beautiful and heart breaking. The movie made me cry because of its beauty and depth of emotion. Renee Zellweger makes Novalyne Price sassy and vunerable while remaining bright and incredibly strong. The setting were beautiful as only Texas could be.

Summary: A beautiful, realistic story of love, friendship and loss
Review: I borrowed this film from the library because it was not available at local video stores (Blockbuster included). As a huge fan of Vincent D'Onofrio's work I meant to see this while it was in theatre but never got around to it...MY BAD! This is a fantastic film that stays with you long after the credits have run. I got the soundtrack just to keep it with me as much as possible. Beautiful cinematography, fabulous acting, and a wonderful, bittersweet TRUE story combine to create an experience that goes WAY beyond "watching a movie." Don't talk or even snack while you watch this film...it deserves your FULL attention!

Summary: I was amazed! Now I want to read the book!
Review: I'm a Robert E Howard fan, that's the reason I rented the film. But I was amazed of how well-made the film was. It's a shame that the film hasn't been more of an blockbuster, because it deserved it. Wonderful actor's. You don't have to be an R E H fan to love this movie.
