Summary: What a moving performance!
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this performance. Who can keep a dry eye on such moving songs as the duet between Porgy and Bess on "Bess, you is my woman now"? I was captivated by the performances of all of the principal actors/singers.

Summary: From a twentysomething point of view
Review: i have seen this version on TV and tape before and found it to be well done. Until finding this site i wasnt even aware there was a version from the 1950's with such great stars,no, Icons, as Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge, Sammy Davis Jr., etc. Having said that I'm sure this 90's version does this no justice. I have always loved the story of Porgy and Bess, and in college had the opportunity to hear one of the older soundtracks with Leontyne Price and Paul Robeson and others while researching the life of G. Gershwin. So my point of view is whatever version you can get your hands on, watch it. If anyone out there has the 50's version, email me PLEASE! For posterity's sake!

Summary: Great performances, BUT...
Review: I really enjoyed this version and own a copy but I'm one of the multitude of people trying to get my hands on a copy of the Dorothy Dandridge version. What are we going to have to do to get this film released on video?

Summary: For All Those Who Are Fans Of The 1959 Otto Preminger Movie!
Review: This two-tape version actually was superb but it doesn't compare with Samuel Goldwyn's 1959 masterpiece directed by Otto Preminger starring Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge, Sammy Davis, Jr., Pearl Bailey, Brock Peters and Diahann Carroll. For all those who are major fans of and are interested in seeing the 1959 version, please feel free to E-Mail me!

Summary: As good as it's going to get
Review: I don't know about Sydney Poitier's feelings about the 1958 version of Porgy and Bess but, from what I've read, the Gershwin family wasn't impressed and it is the Gershwin estate that will not allow the video release of that version. Having said that, I liked this version, the 1958 cast was a hard act to follow but I think they did admirably.

Summary: Most disappointed it was not version with Sydney Portier
Review: This version of Porgy & Bess was ok. However it is a far cry from the original with Potiere & company. Is ther any way you could find out if it will be on AMC. Thank you.

Summary: Good, but not as good as the 50's version
Review: I haven't seen it in some years.. Therefore I must refrain from saying too much.. I too am waiting for the 50's movie to come out on video.. One of my favorite movies.. Put my name on the anxiously waiting list..
