Summary: The Best Wrestling Film EVER Made...
Review: Vision Quest is a truly inspirational film. From it's captivating central character Louden Swain (Modine) right down to it's fantastic soundtrack (Red Rider, Journey). The film centers around a high school seniors' attempt to become the absolute best wrestler he can be by dropping 30 pounds to wrestle the undefeated state champion Brian Chute. Louden is nothing short of obsessed with making the weight and getting on the mat with Chute but that all changes when a homeless artist (Carla) enters his life. Vision Quest is at once a romance and a fascinating look into amateur wrestling. I can still to this day remember my wrestling coach showing us this film and being so totally pumped after it. There's also some great lines between Louden and Chute: "You're a bleeder and I like blood." "Oh yeah, how about you're own?" Anyway, you just can't go wrong with this film especially if you are a wrestler. This film is the ultimate motivational tool for grapplers and just a feel good film for anyone. Highly Recommended.

Summary: good movie, bad DVD
Review: I'm really hoping that they re-release this movie soon. In terms of the Rocky-esque movies, this is one of the better ones. I liked it even better the second time around because I noticed just how realistic Modine's performance is not only as a wrestler, but also as a highschooler.

The problem with the DVD is that (1) the transfer is positively awful, (2)it's standard as opposed to widescreen (not a big issue in this case), and (3) there are no features. The main problem, of course, is with the quality of the transfer, which probably looks better on some VHS versions of the film.

Re-release this into a more non-hurried DVD format and this rating will go from 3 stars to at least 4.

Summary: DVD version is much better than VHS
Review: I have looked at some of the reviews on the suggested
bad quality of the picture of the DVD version, but I
feel this current full-screen DVD version of Vision
Quest is still very good and a heck of a lot better than my
VHS store bought version. Yes, a wide-screen and special
edition DVD packed with features and with some restoration
of the original film would be great, but this DVD version
will do until then. Also, for those people who do want
a choice of having the full-screen format you may want to
buy this DVD now because if Vision Quest is ever released
in a new special edition it may be released in wide-screen
only format so this full-screen version may be hard to get
at some point in the future.

Summary: You can't not like this movie!
Review: At first glance this film may seem like an underdog coming-of age story starring the goldern-retriever-esque Matthew Modine and bad-girl Linda Fiorentino, and it is - but it's actually really good! If you want to revisit what being young and wanting something really bad and feeling like everything is really really important again, see "Vision Quest". It's poignant and inspirational as well as very well directed and edited without beating the viewer over the head with whatever "message" it is that they want you to take away from it. This movie will make you laugh and groan - and probably inspre you to get in shape! I think that anyone who didn't like it has missed the point - plus, you'll get to hear Modine utter the classic early-eighties phrase, "It's no biggie."

Summary: Vision Quest
Review: I absolutely love this movie, despite the wrestling. This movie isn't only about wrestling, it's about coming of age, and the human spirit.

Summary: themes counter mediocre acting to produce excellence
Review: Since most of the people submitting reviews here are wrestlers, ex-wrestlers, or are associated with wrestling, it is very easy to have a biased point of view towards this movie. While some people critique the screenplay or acting, those that enjoy it are looking past the acting and into the theme of the movie.

After reading the book, it becomes evident that the movie is quite different. While the book focuses on growing up ("coming of age") and life, the movie focuses more on the wrestling aspect, obviously to appeal to the masses. I'd say the book was more award-winning material, while the movie was more inspirational. Wrestling, although a big part of Louden Swain's life, was not as overpowering in the book. The book was not about wrestling per se, but about life and growing up. The movie concentrated on the wrestling aspect more which makes it an excellent motivator. Despite the sometimes mediocre screenplay, this movie is a classic to wrestlers because it shows that the human spirit will overcome all. It accurately portrays the blood, guts, and tears that accompany an athlete involved in the sport. As another reviewer commented, the "Rocky" for wrestlers. A definite recommendation to all wrestlers.

Summary: Vision Quest dvd
Review: This is a feel good movie involving a sport about which I could not possibly care any less. But the character of Loudon Swain is such an appealing one that I am completely involved in his quest and cheering him in every frame. One of my watch again and again movies.

Summary: Great movie for older teens
Review: This is a classic. Much better than the Rockie series. Great for the teen involved in sports. Check it out, it's worth it.

Summary: Why fullscreen?
Review: I have been waiting for this one for a while now but I wonder why it was released in fullscreen only. You go into any video store and you see walls of unpurchased fullscreen versions of films. Nobody wants them! I won't buy this until it is released in the proper, unbutchered widescreen version. I wonder if these companies really want to make money or are simply going through the motions.
