Summary: Perhaps the best "hood" movie ever made
Review: This movie(at the time), was the best example of south-cantral L.A. It tells a great story of three boys in the hood who suffer tragic outcomes throughout the story... Well this is a masterpiece people should have, by now, checked out. The sad thing is, John Silvingston couldn't cum up with any other movie that could match this, unless it was Higher Learning, a good movie, nah.

Review: Boyz In The Hood was John Singleton's directorial debut. Only twenty-three at the time of the release, he crafted a gripping and revealing film about life in the gang-riddled, hard scrabble streets of South Central Los Angeles. The movie centers around Tre, played by Cuba Gooding, Jr. Tre lives with his father Furious (Laurence Fishburne), an Afro-centric businessman, who is constantly trying to instill a sense of pride in his son about his culture and his people as well as a respect for life and becoming a real man. Tre's best friend, Rick (Morris Chestnut), is a star football player being heavily recruited by colleges, but also has a young son. Rick's brother Dough Boy (Ice Cube in his acting debut) has just served jail time and is a drug dealer who hangs on his front porch drinking 40's and dealing. The movie is marked with violence as Mr. Singleton shows how on an average Friday night, gunfire can erupt and lives can be lost in an instant. Mr. Gooding shows signs of greatness as he portrays Tre with a naïve and quiet quality, Mr. Fishburne is commanding in his role, but it is Ice Cube who gives the best performance. With no prior acting experience, he is the heart and soul of the film. The scene at the end of the film where Dough Boy and Tre are discussing the state of the ghetto is powerful, moving and heart wrenching. Boyz In The Hood is Mr. Singleton's American Graffiti. Though it doesn't wax nostalgic like that film, it is Mr. Singleton's ode to his youth and neighborhood and it is a lasting and powerful film.

Summary: A realistic portrayal of a tragedy I witnessed firsthand
Review: BOYZ N THE HOOD depicts something that I witnessed first-hand during my teen years in the ghetto of Portland, Oregon: the tragedy of intelligent, even sensitive, young men being turned into statistics: six out of ten black men don't live past age 25. Singleton does an excellent job depicting the emptiness that results when young men are not given father figures to model themselves after. Though I am not African American, BOYZ N THE HOOD "spoke" to me; I don't think that one would have to be African American in order to relate to this movie because it illustrates the universal importance of the presence of a father in the development of the son's identity; in the book ABSENT FATHERS, LOST SONS Guy Corneau writes that "to not have a father is to not have a backbone." In BOYZ N THE HOOD Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr.) is given a backbone by his father Furious (Lawrence Fishburne). Ricky (Morris Chestnut) and Doughboy (Ice Cube) are not so fortunate. If only there were more fathers like Furious!

Summary: Boyz 'N the Hood
Review: This isn't just a "ghetto movie" as some might claim. This is a true piece of movie history that everyone should be forced to see at least once. You are sucked into the movie by watching these kids growing up with each other, learning right from wrong, but before you know it they are adults and things get complicated. The Five Stairsteps soul classic "Ooh Child" compliments this movie perfectly for a realistic, gritty, and moving portrayal of life in the slums. A well deserved 10/10.

Review: Boyz N the Hood was and still is one of the most powerful movies I've ever seen. Shot entirely in South Central LA to present the movie as realistic as possible. The movie debuted in theater back in 1991 and had an immediate impact on almost everyone who viewed it. The story about 3 friends growing up in the hood in South Central LA. Each one with their own individual struggle and goals in life. Doughboy (Ice Cube) ,who is a drug dealer, has been in and out of trouble throughout his young life and seems to be happy with his surroundings. Doughboy's brother Ricky (Morris Chestnut) a teenage father with bright hopes and aspirations of becoming an NFL football player ; and Ricky's best friend Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr.) who hopes and dreams of higher education and an escape from the dwelling of the hood. "The Hood" where saying the wrong thing or looking at someone the wrong way can end in death. Tre's father (Larry Fishburne) is a responsible, educated and strict father who makes sure his son stays on the right track in achieving his goals in life. Teaching him about responsibility and keeping your cool in adverse situations in order to make a thoughtful descision. Tre's resolve will be tested when tragedy strikes close to home and revenge and murder seem like the only solution. Fantastic direction by John Singleton and equally impressive acting by all characters are the reason Boyz N the Hood was such a huge success. It was nominated for two acedemy awards (Direction and Screenplay.) ... You have to see this one for yourself you won't be sorry.

Summary: MAYBE THE BEST EVER
Review: I absolutely love this movie, and reccomend it to anyone. It is a stunning depiction of of how we live. I'm from Watts, CA, very close to Long Beach, where this movie was based, and have been there many a time. About ten years ago, when this film was made, I was 14, I remember crying during this movie because the same types of things were happening all around me. I was tough, and I wasn't in a gang, just like the kids in this movie, they weren't in a gang, they were just friends. I hate the people that say this was a gang movie, this wasn't a gang movie, this was a good movie!

Review: John Singleton did a good job with this portrayal of youths caught up in urban street life. I loved this movie, and I think that it has good good message for young black males. I loved the cast too because Cuba Gooding Jr. (Tre Styles), Ice Cube (Darren B.K.A Doughboy), Morris Chestnut (Ricky), Nia Long (Brandy),and Laurence Fishburne (Furious Styles) all do fantastic jobs.
