Summary: Simply Kubrick
Review: The late master Stanley Kubrick has always provoked thought through his films. In "Clockwork Orange" he showed us the importance of a free will and in "Full Metal Jacket" he almost humorously showed how men are turned into killers (just to give a few examples). But this final work, and probably his greatest should hit home to almost everyone in our society, simply because it's a commentary on monogomy.

The movie follows an ideal couple, whose marriage is challenged through psychological and physical infidelity. Kubrick shows us how dangerous fantasys can be, sometimes even more than physical confrontations. "Eyes Wide Shut" cuts through all the superficial answers and shows the reality of our animalistic natures as humans. But even though their urges go beyond the line of reason, they still as partners, strive to maintain their union. Nicole Kidman's last line in the film almost shockingly states the pure, true mold to their relationship and to almost all relationships. Ugly truth, but deep down.

The performances by both Kidman and Cruise, were very well played, this being said by probably the MOST anti-Hollywood spectator out there. They really impressed me, what can I say. Not only is the plot grade A, but the imagery is, well, like all Kubrick films, very spectacular. Like all Kubrick's dvds, unfortunately, the package is very unsatisfactory. I have no idea why all his dvds give you just the bare minimum. Either way, it's the only thing out there and the movie itself is definately worth the buy.

Summary: What This Movie Was Truly About... READ BEFORE WATCHING!!!
Review: The Theme of Eyes Wide Shut:
How the American obsession with sexual promiscuity and infidelity has perverted many to the point that they find no meaning to marriage and commitment, and ultimately not only lose sight of "love", but their perversion bands many together into cults like the one you see 1/2 way through the film. These people (the influencial of society, no less) become fanatics of their own deviance. Their sordid assemblies drag the evolving human culture back centuries to where people knew no better than to make ritual out of perversion.

At the end of the film, the marrieds try to find meaning in what they've revealed about themselves through this "sexual odysee", ...

Downside: People confuse this with big-budget porn because of the nudity. They movie revolts us in that way so that we can't see that IT MOCKS US.

Most provocative monologue goes to Nicole Kidman at the end of the film. Watered-down, it reads thus:
"I love you, but I'm afraid of commitment. Let's not say we'll be together FOREVER.
"All that love means in our relationship is an excuse to have sex.
"Sex is like prozac."

Summary: From beginning to the end it's a Kubrick film .....
Review: even though Kubrick died before having the opportunity to finish editing the film it has his telltale marks and brilliance ....

The movie was based on an erotic mini story by a German author, and, with all the naked women in the movie it's definitely male oriented erotica. Tom Cruise plays a very married and comfortable DR William Grtford and the movie starts with his wife, Nicole, informing him that no, contrary to his belifs, married women such as she do have erotic dreams and desires for men other than their husbands.

Of course our hero is highly disturbed by this confession and enters a night of adventure, intrigue, temptation and debauchery where he is a willing passenger but not participant. The dear naiive DR opens his eyes and in a period of 24 hours gets more sexual and adultrous activity slapped into his face over and over ..... and .... even though at several pints in the film the Dr wants to get a taste of the forbidden events that suuround him leave him frustrated ....

If you are a male and enjoy erotic literature the ods are in your favour that you'll love this movie ......

Summary: Titillation and Sensationalism...
Review: ...are cheap and easy ways to get a response from an audience.

Did anyone stop to think about the fact that Kubrick chose TOM CRUISE (Risky Business?) and NICOLE KIDMAN, known more for their looks than for their acting ability, to play in his "intellectual" film about sexual intrigue?!? Does anyone really DENY that they had hoped/expected some hot sex scenes between Cruise and Kidman, and that they were given that expectation by the trailers?

If Kubrick had really wanted to emphasize the sexual psychology in this flick, he would have chosen lesser-known, non-heart throb actors for the roles. To me, it is clear that Kubrick was pandering to his audience. And it is precisely because he underestimated the intelligence of his audience that the film was unsuccessful.

Summary: Unsmurfy...
Review: My wife and I did not enjoy this unsmurfalicious film. It was so not up to par with the rest of Kubrick's films. I'd rather sit and watch Gargamail sing happy songs to butterflies than have to sit through this junk again. This was one smurfed up film.

Summary: It Drags.
Review: 'Eyes Wide Shut' seems to drag on and on until the end of time. There are a few really awesome scenes, such as the orgy and the 'billiard room' talk, but most of the movie is not worth it.

Summary: The Master Goes Out On Top.
Review: As you all well know, I'm a Kubrick Fan of the highest order and this final masterpiece from the finest filmmaker in history does not dissapoint. While much controversy was raised over the liberal nudity and seemingly indecipherable plot ( I understood it perfectly) the main focus here should be on the sheer beauty, skill and grace that this film exhibits. After more than a decade away from the big screen, Kubrick retained his fine form and complete mastery of his chosen medium. I personally think he did the epic novel "TRAUMNOVELLE" beautiful justice with this film and delivered one final blow to minds of Kubrick devotee's and film lovers all around the world. This is a fitting and perfect end to a majestic and brilliant career.

Summary: KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN
Review: If you blink, you'll probably miss something. It's a shame such a great movie like this one was terribly misunderstood. If you are someone who enjoys movies as an "escape" from reality, but who doesn't like to be challenged by thought-provoking films, skip this one!! Eyes Wide Shut is a dark, mysterious, spooky, and strange movie. It's ending is not one of those neat and tidy, happily ever after conclusions either. It's up to the viewer to decide what was reality and what was the fantasy. Is the whole movie someone's dream, or just the masked ball? Why did Alice's "nightmare" that she described almost match the masked ball perfectly? Was she there? After watching this movie, you will definitely be asking many many questions. Unfortunately, there are no definite answers. I'm a huge fan of Kubrick and thought this was one of his best films, aside from A Clockwork Orange, of course!! Anyways, great performances by Tom and Nicole. Who would've thought they wouldn't still be together!?!? I highly recommend this film to anyone who enjoys movies that rise above the norm, or who likes to think about them after. A truly great film, but often misunderstood and overlooked.

Summary: Kubrick's Final Masterpiece...
Review: ...and what a masterpiece it is. Blending the supposedly 'obscene' with moral and ethical issues, Stanley Kubrick once again gives us a wonderful film that will be remembered in the minds of many people as the ultimate departure for one of the world's most beloved (and controversial) directors.

Alongside its mature content, Eyes Wide Shut gives us something to ponder about - Kubrick was always good at doing this. He gives us food for thought in each of his movies, and Eyes Wide Shut does not let us down in that regard. It constantly poses moral, ethical, and emotional dilemas for the audience and public eye to discuss and deal with.

As always, alongside any of Kubrick's movies, there has been controversy over topic discussed in the film, and the film's meaning. In the opinion of many people, this is the signature of a truly excellent movie. And the director of such a movie should be reconized for making this often dull world liveable.
