Rating: Summary: A Modern Masterpeice ! Review: What can I say, except that The Best Man is truly a breakthrough movie. Comedy, Romance, Drama...what more can you ask for in a movie. Amazing performances by an extraordinary cast. Miss Nia Long is without a doubt, the gem of the movie, and she is an amazing actress, especially in the African-American movie industry. No wonder that this movie won so many awards at this year's NAACP Awards. The best scenes are the wedding scene, and the last scene where they all do the electric slide to the song "Candy" by Cameo. I was dancing in my chair at the movie theater. May I also add, The Best Man comes with a great soundtrack! Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill, Genuwine, Tyrese, Faith Evans, Eric Benet.....GALORE! A job well done.
Rating: Summary: Not the Best Movie Review: I never got to see "The Best Man" in the movie theatres. After a discussion with some colleagues regarding some of the themes prevalent in the movie, I decided that I would see it once it got to video. Having finally seen it on video, I must say that this movie is contrived, too slow to start and full of characters that are one-dimensional. Is it possible that a writer could write a book that would be that destructive of the writer's friendships? Perhaps. However, this book being the vehicle that provides the movie's "conflict" rings false. Additionally, the characters (not the ones in the book) aren't fleshed out. We the audience are supposed to buy Lance's(the football player)contradictory language regarding Jesus and his ridiculous language regarding women without explanation. Why is he like this? The antagonist winds up with the shrew the same day as the shrew is dumped? Excuse me? I'm supposed to accept that? The male characters are cardboard and the women seem to serve little purpose other than window dressing for the weak, boastful, and utterly forgettable men. In some ways, the movie seems more like a Terry McMillan or E. Lynn Harris novel than a movie from a screenplay. It's full of quick fixes and long stretches of exposition that says little. Save your money and buy a much better movie like love jones or Soul Food.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful and Funny Review: I would first like to correct one of your reviewers. 'Soul Food' may have began with an Earth, Wind, and Fire song, but 'The Best Man' ended with a Cameo song. They recorded 'Candy,' not EWF. I thought the movie was great. Terrance Howard deserves much recognition for his role as 'Quinten.' The storyline was well developed as were the characters. It had its serious moments as well. I especially liked the speech that 'Harper' gave while toasting the bride and groom. The words were really deep. Seeing African Americans acknowledging their love for one another on screen is truly refreshing. But seeing us FORGIVE one another is good too!
Rating: Summary: Very Average Review: aside from Terrence Howard nobody else comes close too match his Grand Performance.the film was way Too Long&Cliched.aside from Nia Long alot of Soul Food Bites here. How For Instance Soul Food Started out with a Earth,Wind&Fire Song this One Ended With one.the writting isn't that strong. The Women Looked Great but their Story-lines were never developed enough.Taye Diggs has Some Talent but hasn't found that Role Yet.MR.Howard Should Have Gotten an Award.cuz without him this film would have been truly Forgettable.nothing new under the sun here.
Rating: Summary: Disagree With the Amazon Reviewer Review: I totally am at odds with Bret Fetzer in his assessment of the "chauvinistic male banter" and the "poorly developed" female characters. I don't know where he has been, but that is the way most guys talk when women are not around. It is not intended to be sexist but it's "a guy thing." My sisters tell me about "the secret dialogues" that they have when get together. I feel that the film captured that bit of everyday life perfectly. As far as the female characters, each of them is successful, beautiful, and independent. They know what they want out of life and strive to attain it. They represent a variety of personalities from self-centered prima donna to the professional career woman. They are a reflection of the magnificent diversity of the American woman. Now, the film itself is perfectly acted. Taye Diggs, so good in "How Stella Got Her Groove On," is outstanding as the author who sets the stage for the film's events to occur. Nia Long shines in her role as Jordan, a longtime friend who harbors a desire to fulfill a tryst began long ago in college. Morris Chestnut, who obviously spent a lot of time at the gym, brings depth and excitement to his role as Lance, the groom. Terrence Howard and Melissa Calhoun are memorable as two characters so similar that they are destined to share an intimate moment. Howard Perrineau and Sanaa Lathan round out this highly gifted cast. This film deserved much more the box office success it received. Acting, writing and directing nominations by either the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and The Foreign Press Club should have been given. "The Best Man" has a great story, realistic characters, good editing, masterful direction by Malcolm Lee, and a good score from Stanley Clarke along with the use of popular artists. Buy it!
Rating: Summary: Alright already! Review: What a pleasant surprise. My wife kept asking me to get this movie and I said hell no, but on a Saturday night with not much else available to rent I took the plunge and was pleasantly surprised. The cast led by Taye Diggs and Nia Long Were all great Especially Terrence Howard as Quincy a scene stealer if ever there was one. The Dvd looks and sounds great with some nice extras. A good buy. If you're a collecter this is worth your CASH...
Rating: Summary: One of the best I've seen in recent months! Review: The moment I saw The Best Man, I knew I had to own the video. The actors in it are excellent and the plot hits close to home. I, too, had a problem with intimacy and commitment, so I can relate to Taye Diggs's character. I laughed out loud and cried (don't tell anyone, okay?) at the end. It is one of the most touching and human stories I have ever seen. In a nutshell, The Best Man is phat!
Rating: Summary: A HUMAN STORY, NOT A BLACK ONE Review: I am a black human being. I watched this movie, and having friends of different races and backgrounds I realized that no matter what the color of the actors were in this movie.NO ONE, NOT BLACK,WHITE,HISPANIC, ASIAN, INDIAN... no one could see this film and not see themselves, their friends etc. Since when did emotions have a color? Since when did loyalty, love and dedication become a race issue? The last time I checked, those are HUMAN ISSUES.This movie delivered, and it should have won more praise and it should have been nominated for academy awards. Thats another story. America is not ready to appreciate a film of this depth and knowledge and above all; a film devoid of stereo typical "negro" behavior. Beyond all of that, the immense love and loyalty that transcended the negative issues of the film were ever present and very appreciated. Keep up the good work!
Rating: Summary: Excellent and Extremely Romantic Review: I think this movie was great! The characters all played great roles. It's about a author who writes a book about a secret past that has the ability to change his brotherhood with his friends. Taye Diggs was awesome and his supporting actor (Nia Long) was just as great. This was a beautiful story and deserves more than just 5 points.
Rating: Summary: all of the brothers were the "Best Men" Review: Wonderful, fresh, funny, and sexy. I was truly surprised by the peformance of Terrance Howard. When I first saw him, I thought that he was cute, but, I was not ready for the charisma and devilishness that dripped from his character. He is truly a gifted and sexy actor. The other men in this movie displayed qualities not often expressed by Black men in movies. I was tryuly impressed.
