Summary: Dark and Deep "Interrupted" Had This Girl Raving...
Review: "Girl, Interrupted", one of the best dramatic films in 2000, brings a darker side of life to the screen, not only referring to the time period, but also to the subject matter. Set in the turbulent late 1960s, a time of drugs, politics, and war, it follows the life of Susanna Kaysen, more specifically her two year stay at the famed McLean Psychiatric Hospital. Diagnosed with a "borderline personality disorder", she chooses not to conform to the wishes of the head nurse (Whoopi Goldberg) and psychiatrist (Vanessa Redgrave), but to instead befriend the resident women around her. Among them, a girl who will only eat her father's chicken, a woman who loves "Alice In Wonderland", and a charmingly charismatic sociopath Lisa (Angelina Jolie), the self proclaimed ringleader of the group. But confronted with the reality of it all and the looming need to be "fixed" Susanna soon realizes that to truly escape and taste her freedom, she will need to confront her biggest fear: herself. Winona Ryder, with an air of innocense and a tremendously realistic range of emotions and talents, has one of the best performances in her career as Susanna, and Angelina Jolie delivers a jaw-dropping (and well-earned Oscar- winning) performance as the troubled Lisa. Although this film is not for the weak at heart (it has disturbing self-mutilation/suicide scenes), it is wonderful in the sense it paints a realistic picture free of inhabitions and boundaries to create a truly remarkable film achievement.

Summary: One Flew over the Girl
Review: Of course any movie made about people in a psychiatric ward will resemble the classic 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest'. This we also do not know for sure if the leading character is sane or not.

Winona Ryder is great in this movie, though a little too pretty. The best perfomance comes from Angelina Jolie, who is just amazing. The movie is sometimes a little sad, frightening, scary but also moving. The ending is a little sweet but not too sweet. A happy ending with a twist.

The music is great since it plays in 1968, although the theme of the sixties is a little underplayed. It is still a great movie though.

Summary: "I didn't try to kill myself...I had a headache"
Review: "Girl, Interrupted" is the true story of Susanna Kaysen (Winona Ryder), a young woman who was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder during the 1960s. My favorite parts of the film were the transitions between scenes; the movie flowed beautifully. Susanna signs herself into Claymoore, a mental institution, after a failed attempt at suicide. At Claymoore, she meets a wide variety of different girls, each with different problems. There is Lisa the sociopath, played by Angelina Jolie and Daisy, a loner, played by "Clueless's" Brittany Murphy. Whoopi Goldberg rounds out the cast as Valerie, the head nurse on Susanna's floor. A bit reminiscent of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," "Girl, Interrupted" is one of the finest films I have ever seen. Winona Ryder is brilliant, I have never seen her portray a character better.

Summary: Extremely funny and emotional
Review: Three elements combine to make "Girl, Interrupted" one of the most emotional and stupendous films ever made: a solid story, an intense and stressful setting and incredible acting by some of Hollywood's finest. Winona Ryder plays Susanna, who is being placed in a mental hospital after taking an entire bottle of aspirin with vodka. Her diagnosis, Borderline Personality Disorder, is never proved, but she spends one year of her life in Claymore Mental Hospital. While there, she befriends many of the residents, including the rebellious Lisa, played by Angelina Jolie. Throughout the course of her stay, as Susanna's friendships grow deeper, her will to escape becomes distant, as does her compliance with the rules of the institution. She soon comes to a realization that she must look inside of herself and discover what she truly wants: freedom. The story is based on the novel of the same name, written by the main character Susanna. Full of heart and emotion, it evokes several different fields of feeling: levity, heartache, sadness, and hope for the future. The performances by Ryder and Jolie, especially in the most harrowing moments of the film, will have you in tears. Though some consider the story to be too long, it holds its own as one of the best films based on a true story.

Summary: Excellent telling of the misuses of Psychiatry.
Review: The overall message in this film seems to be the misuse of Psychiatry and the medicalisation of unhappiness. It's a stunning film and depicts cleverly how there is something both containing and destructive in placing the mentally unwell together. It features a fine cast but undoubtedly the stand out performances are Angenlina Jolie for her volitile, angry and energetic delivery,Whoopi Goldberg for her understated care, compassion and humanity and Brittany Murphy for her intense vulnerability.
Not an easy film, particulary for Murphy's role, not easy but well worth a shot; almost an all female "one flew over".

Summary: Great Identity-Discovery Film for Women
Review: Girl Interrupted is a chick flick sans the romance. I do not see how guys would possibly get into this film. Girls, please do not torture your boyfriends/husbands by making them watch this. That said, the film is based on a true story, a book by Susanna Kaysen. Susanna (played by Winona Ryder) was in a mental institution as a young woman for a full year in the late 1960's. She meets the enigmatic and magnetic Lisa (played by Angelina Jolie), a street-smart, seemingly confident and cool young woman whom many other patients idolize. Susanna soon falls under Lisa's spell, too, but with disastrous consequences. Great performances all around, including Vanessa Redgrave as one of the institution's psychiatrists and Brittany Murphy as patient Daisy. In this film, Murphy actually has some meat on her bones and looks much better. I did not even realize it was her until the end credits. Whoopi Goldberg is so wonderful as a caring nurse. You just wish she could be your mom.

There is one scene so disturbing in the film, which caused me to rate Girl, Interrupted four stars instead of five. Something so horrible occurs in the scene, and right after that, something unspeakable. You have no time to recover from the shock, and never really do. Another scene has graphic and disturbing dialouge. Both scenes take place out of the institution, and show Lisa's true nature.

The extras in this DVD are what extras are meant to be. There is a wonderful commentary with Ryder and author Kaysen. Photos of the young Kaysen are shown, along with bits of deleted scenes. The deleted scenes section contains more deleted scenes, which really shed a lot of light on the film. Everything you were wondering about is shown in those scenes, including the origin of the title of the movie.

The last few moments and monolouge of the film made me bawl. You will too!

Summary: THE CAST IS OUTSTANDING.
Review: The movie about and niphomaniac that is unashamed to practically say that she's is normal, when all that Wynona caracter wanted to portrait is the needs of the human being, been a picture where the story focus on a bunch of wackos of the late 60's is an amusement that every actress here make extremely believeble personas. Although Angelina Jolie got the oscar, she couldn't have done it without the interaction with Ryder character, chubby Murphy and serious Goldberg, this story of a mental institution still shows that Hollywood and the main public has an affair with crazy coocoo people movies. But for me this movie is over the top of the mental movies. *****FIVE STARS to the acting and script.

Summary: A touching true story
Review: Based on a true story by Susana Keason, Girl Interrupted. Susanna is depressed and directionless after finishing high school in the late 1960's. A suicide attempt lands her in Claymore, a mental institution. The film is a powerful exploration into a depressing, bleak situation.
Angelina Jolie certainly has a flashy role with Lisa, the resident sociopath, but makes her seem real, until the movie betrays her at the end. When she's pushing people's buttons, she's actually quite sly about it, which is a lot more multi-dimensional than some have made it out to be.

Summary: My favorite Winona Ryder movie
Review: I thought that Girl, Interrupted was a fantastic movie. The characters were so deep and each one had such a personality as a single people and as a group. The parts were so well casted! I give praise to Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie and Britany Murphy! Great Performance! I especially liked the emotions and feelings in the scene when Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie wrok together to calm down a hyper friend by singing "Downtown".

Don't rent this movie. Buy it.
