Summary: A Hallmark card of a movie....
Review: This is a visually pretty movie, written to be poignant. People seem to forget this when they write reviews of it....

"The Legend of Bagger Vance" is a worthwhile view provided the viewer satisfies a number of conditions first. First, viewers who are looking for an artistic masterpiece will find is a sickeningly sweet picture without angst or pretense aside from that which Will Smith delivers his lines; these seem to come straight out of the self-help books written by people like Deepak Chopra. Matt Damon plays a World War I veteran smitten with enough angst to drink himself into a stupor yet not quite enough to seek the greater redemption through literary or means enough to help anyone other than himself. There is no angst or mental torpor; this isn't that kind of movie.

So what is it? This is a feel-good movie-- not quite a golfer's 'Field of Dreams' but darned close. She builds a golf course, the all-time greats come, and in the end, the world is saved and we reach the truly great end-of-history (not Hegel's or Fukyama's)-- life happily ever after.

The music, clothes, and actors in this movie are what one would expect out of a work without hint of depravity or true tragedy. When the protagonist's father is out of work, it is not because he suffered but instead because he was good; even the 'bad' guys really come off good. It's as heartwarming as anything outside of Disney, and all over the world, golfers shall be drooling over the shots of the course....

Review: To qualify this review, let me say that often I will go to a film determined to prove the critics wrong. With this film the draw was the cast....I'll see anything that the studios put out with either Will Smith, Matt Damon, or Charlize Theron in the cast. I go to a movie for entertainment ! This picture did not disappoint me. It provided two new stars to watch as they climb to new heights. You will delight in the fresh acting of J. Michael Moncrief as he portrays the young Hardy Greaves. Joel Gretsch is another fresh and handsome face, bound to star in many future releases which will allow him more room to show his diversity. In this picture he plays a very empathetic person untouched by today's crass commercialism of the sport. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the film has to be it's period costuming and sets. The poetic magic of the camera will delight many who are sick of films that try to shock the senses with destruction and violence. Any parent who wants a good movie that will tell a captivating story, and instill sound morality will find "The Legend of Bagger Vance " a worthy investment. Now I think I'll read the book !!

Summary: Impressive
Review: The Legend of Bagger Vance really touched. The symbolism and hidden meanings in the movie were numerous, making the viewer really reflect on his or her own life. All of sometimes fell as if we have lost our "Authentic Swing" at sometime or another. We would all be blessed if a Bagger Vance (played by Will Smith)would help us find it again. Robert Redford did a fine job in selecting the cast for this movie. Bagger should have had more scenes in between the golf tournament but the character was still solid. Matt Damon proved once again in this movie that he is one of the best talents in the acting profession today. Overall, this is the real deal. May even have oscar potential.

Summary: Movie about golf, but was trying to be something else!
Review: Regardless of what Robert Redford was trying to accomplish with this movie, it just turns out to be a movie about golf amoungst the setting of the great depression. It tries to be mystical and mysterious, but with sloppy cuts from scene to scene, and a poor plot, this movie falls apart early. Will Smith plays a character which should be hosting a show like Oprah, with all his deep thoughts on life. I became bored with that character within about two minutes. I don't know if it was just bad acting, a bad script, or both, but this movie was pretty pathetic. The only thing I liked about this movie was the sporting sequences where they actually were playing golf. If this movie was just about that without the lame story behind it, it whould have been much better. My suggestions is to rent this, if even that.

Summary: The Legend of Bagger Vance
Review: I found the movie enthralling as well as uplifting. It truly showed the game of golf as a game to be "played not won". It also went out of those boundaries and showed the struggle of the human spirit. Bagger (Will Smith) was an exceptional character and gave one hope of being able to find life's answers within oneself. One of the bright spots was Jack Lemmon and his narration of the movie. It provided a continuity, while allowing you to focus on the story itself. If you did not believe in Angels you cannot watch this story and not know there are those guardian spirits...Angels if you will.

Review: THIS WAS A GOOD MOVIE FOR A CHANGE WITHOUT ALL THE VIOLENCE AND BAD LAGUAGE. IT WAS A LITTLE BORING TO MY FOURTEEN YEAR OLD DAUGHTER, BUT THAT'S GOLF. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE CLEAN CUT MOVIES LIKE THIS IN THE THEATERS. MOVIES LIKE THIS ENCOURAGE HOPE IN A WORLD THAT SEEMS TO SEE DEFEAT IN SO MANY AREAS OF TRAGIC EVENTS IN THERE LIVES. HOPE, THAT LIFE ACCOMPLISHMENTS CAN BE REACHED AND CIRCUMSTANCES CAN BE CHANGED.

Summary: On The Game on Life
Review: This movie was done in the manner that it is expected to deliver. Shot in the Low Country of Savannah, with beautiful shots of the greens, the South and golf are a perfect background for reflections on life. One would have to expect this movie to be slow, long, and enjoyable, like a picnic and lemonade on a sunny day. Will Smith's dramatic turn from his usual action hero roles is likably refreshing. The cinematography is breathtaking. The young boy cast as the young Harvey Greaves was engaging, as well as Jack Lemmon narrating the story. This movie is not for everyone; it can be a sleeper or frustrating at least if you are trying to dissect the mini plots that entertwine with the main plot. This movie is not about golf, racism, the Great Depression, romance...it is about the game of life. A great way to spend an afternoon or evening if you can get yourself in that mood.

Summary: The Legend of Bagger Vance
Review: In order to write this book, Mr. Pressfield had to have an experience, and that is what the movie is lacking. The book is about the relationship between a golfer who has lost his swing and his caddie who guides him back to it. It is not about a romance - which is not at all alluded to in the book. Mr. Redford missed the finer points of the book. One of the best parts of the book was the night Bagger and Henry were walking the course and Bagger explained the three priniciples of life (and golf) to the sportswriter. Charlene Therzon(sp)was good and Southern, and her clothes were fabulous. It's a shame that we don't dress like that anymore. Bruce McGill was great as Walter Hagen. However, Will Smith was the infinitive Bagger Vance. My husband thought the character should have been older (Morgan Freeman), but Bagger Vance was a spirit, he is a visible inner self, and in that, he is ageless, and Will Smith did a wonderful job. I can't explain how thoroughly disappointed I was in the movie, because the book overwhelmed me.

Summary: worst movie so far of 2000
Review: This movie has a bad script and bad directing. Part of the movie has the mic running into the actors and the rest of it is just a joke. "A man's grip on his club is like his grip on his world." Why? "what did you like about us," "I liked the way we danced." Is that it. When you aren't laughing at the dramatic scenes, you are laughing at the moronic lines. Matt Damon and Will Smith made a poor choice in picking to act in this movie. Don't see this movie.
