Summary: LOW DOWN DIRTY SHAME
Review: THIS IS AN EXCELLENT MOVIE, STARRING KEENEN IVORY WAYANS. HE IS BOTH EXCITING AND SEXY IN THIS FUNNY ACTION MOVIE. BOTH HE AND JADA PINKETT SMITH WAS VERY POWERFUL TO ME AS WELL AS FUNNY. THE MOVIE WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITES. WHEN KEENEN SHAVED HIS HEAD AND PUT ON ALL THAT BLACK, HE WAS SO SEXY. THIS MOVIE GETS IT'S SHARE OF VIEWINGS IN MY HOUSE. AS A MATTER OF FACTS, I AM ABOUT TO WATCH IT RIGHT NOW AS SOON AS I FINISH THIS REVIEW. THANKS, JANICE

Summary: Mildly Interesting
Review: Although somewhat shallow this movie does have interesting moments. The best part is depicting the competition between Prince and Morris Day as they each try to make it big in the club scene. It is also inteersting how Prince's parents turbulent relationship shapes his self serving personality in the film. He finally realizes in the end that the world does not revolve around himself when he gives his two female band members a bit of a showcase for their song.

It would have been nice for the characters to reveal themselves a bit more words and acting rather than just a collection fo songs. This really appears to be a video collection mroe than anything else. It is entertaining to a degree but there could be some more substance to the characters. In general, there is just enough to make this a middle of the road film.

Summary: It's Not Just A Music Video
Review: Leonard Maltin's review missed the main point of this movie. The movie is not primarily about a young musician who "struggles to gain acceptance for his own brand of ... rock music". Instead, the movie is about a man who has acquired his not only some of his father's musical interest and talent, but also his father's emotional instability and occasional abusiveness towards others, especially women. Maltin is correct that Prince's character is sexist and unappealing, but that's crucial to the movie. By playing his character as emotionally unstable, insensitive, and occasionally cruel, Prince de-glamourizes the cool, rebellious rock star image, showing that fame and talent are neither a guaranteed road to happiness nor a good excuse for being cruel to your girlfriend. This movie, rather than being a "soppy story" wrapped around concert footage, is instead genuinely literary. The concert footage is not an excuse for a movie; some of the concert footage is integral to the story. The title song, "Purple Rain", is used very effectively in the movie as a point of conflict between Prince and two of his female bandmates.

This movie, like Quadrophenia, would make a good subject for an English literature class targeted towards aimlessly rebellious under-achievers (rather than the 4.0 GPA high school students that most English literature classes are designed for).

Review: This movie is a pop culture classic. A must have for anyone born before 1979. If you are a Gen-Xer you remember the impact this movie had in your life. And the remastered soundtrack is great.

Review: This movie was badly written, edited , for the most part terrible acting with the exception of Morris Day and his side kick Jerome Benton and all the great music ! made this movie a four star for me if it was on acting a lone it's gets 0 as well as for acting ..

Summary: Unbelievable
Review: This is one of those films that I just couldn't care less about any of its shortcomings-- because Prince is such a white-hot rock Olympian and this film has it right on screen. It has only aged in a good way- and as for the story- I don't mind watching Prince make it with the ladies-- he is one serious hard-core bad mother.

Summary: Purple Redemption
Review: By far, Purple Rain is Prince's best screen performance and arguably his best music score. The semi-autobiographical story takes place in Minniapolis where Prince plays the Kid --an up and coming club musician whose tortured soul can only find solace in his unique and occassionaly misunderstood music that is performed by himself and his band the Revolution. The Kid's music not only serves as a channeled cartharsis for the pent up frustrations caused by an abusive home life , but also as a battle ground for the incessant rivalry between himself and his nemesis Morris with his band the Time. The two not only compete for elite music status, but also, for the attentions of the Kid's love interest, the sexy Appolonia Kotero. Appolonia is caught in a power play between Prince's affections and Morris's desire capitalize off of her potentially bankable music talents. A talent, that if proven up to par, could knock Prince's character out of the club scene all together. She must also confront the inherited trait of abuse that the Kid has adopted from his father. Only after coming home to a horrific scene does the Kid begin to see the error of his ways, and an insight begins that is so powerful, it culminates into the climatic and errie song "Purple Rain." A song of redemption that not only speaks of the Kids's internal rebirth, but of a symbolism embodied in the color purple that represents a new beginning and a rain that is sybolic of a cleansing.

Summary: Things I learned from watching Purple Rain
Review: 1. In the '80's, it was fashionable for avant-garde rockers to wear colonial-era ruffled shirts, laced gloves, high heels, and trousers with big plastic buttons on the front and sides.

2. When applying for a job, it is acceptable to list a hotel room as your current address.

3. If you are biracial and look bisexual, you can win women over by treating them like dirt.

4. It is possible to make a successful movie in which everyone uses their real names.

5. It is possible to make a successful movie in which the budget allots three million dollars for costumes and about fifty dollars for acting lessons.

6. Prince can be made to look like a guy of average height.

7. Motorcycle riders are not required to wear helmets in the state of Minnesota.

8. Black men and Italian women don't get along well.

9. Being a 25-year-old rocker in Minneapolis necessitates living in your parents' basement.

10. A man does not have to say "Thank you" when his girlfriend gives him a $1500 guitar, but a woman does have to say "Thank you" when her boyfriend gives her one of his earrings.

11. Playing a tape of a woman crying backwards sets a romantic mood.

12. If your father has written several songs, that does not necessarily mean that they are "all different."

13. In the '80's, manufactured girl bands were considered equal to bands that wrote their own music and played their own instruments.

14. If you have a really cheesy band, it helps to win over the audience if you have a couple gay guys in police uniforms on the balcony dancing to your song.

15. You can win over an irate manager, an ex-girlfriend, a rival, and pretty much an entire nightclub crowd just by playing a silly song that someone else wrote and dedicating it to your father.

Summary: pretty good but has aged
Review: i used to like this film more back in the day.but it hasn't aged well.the music carried the film overall.Morris Day&Jerome Benton Stole the show.my favorite Prince film is Under the Cherry Moon.to me that's his most Honest.still it made it's point and was very important&influential.

Summary: Try to get the german DVD
Review: This DVD doesn't contain the widescreen version (otherwise I would have rated it higher). I recommend the german DVD, as it's not only widescreen but anamorphic, too! It also features the english audio track (and subtitles).
