Summary: For the dreamer in us all ....
Review: I love this film; it's one of my favorites - and I'm not even a child. I've read the book and seen three cinematic adaptations of it. This is the most beautiful one. Liesel Matthews is charming and believable. She isn't directed to be "cute" but to be strong of will.

I also like the variety of the adult characters. Too often in children's films, there are two kinds of adults: Oblivious parents and Mean Old Authority Figures. This movie has an attentive father, a wistful pushover, a kindly mystery man, a milkman lover ... even the "evil schoolmistress" has a human side that she denies.

This is really an intelligent movie that doesn't talk down to the audience. I was absorbed into Sara's world. Every time I watch it I cry, and I feel very good about life.

Summary: fine production
Review: A LITTLE PRINCESS is a fine family film, boasting wonderful production values and intelligent performances.

Eleanor Bron steals the show in her masterful performance as Miss Minchin. She brings a real coldness to her character as well as humility and the nuances in her portrayal are superb.

Liesl Matthews makes for a fine, if a little cloying, Sara Crewe. She has a feeling for the part, but, as this was her first major role in a movie, she can't carry the part the whole way. As Sara's friend Becky, Vanessa Lee Chester is wonderful. Her spunky portrayal of the plucky little girl goes down a treat.

A soaring production, A LITTLE PRINCESS does have it's flaws, but , in the bigger picture, they don't really matter.

Summary: A Classic must read for children
Review: Here is a book about a young girl Sara Crewe whose father and his partner have made a great deal of money while in India. The father dies while his young daughter is away at boarding school. A school with a bitter School Mistress Ms. Minchin and a sweet young servant girl named Becky who when the money stops coming to pay for the school fees, Miss Sarah is made a servant girl as well, to pay for the debt her father wasn't able to pay.

Becky and she become great friends and thru her imagination Sarah is able to transform the attic room that is bare, lacks heat and only a window that opens to the roof. Unbeknownest to her the man her father was in business with has taken the property next door complete with his eccentric Indian aid and his small monkey.

The monkey would prove to be a key to Sarahs rescue when it gets loose and its master goes looking for him and discovers him being befriended by Sarah who has so little but is willing to share. Sarah isnt aware of it but the servant will become a secret angel who while Sarah is gone, will place food and other treats in the room. Coal for the fireplace and hot food. Sarah and Becky become awed but continue to scrub floors and not give up.

Meanwhile the fathers friend is desperate to find his friends young daugher, as he has not only the means to care for her but he feels great guilt for not having been able to save her father before he died so that he would know that their business venture had not gone bust. It has a lovely ending that proves that Sarah and Becky were both saved.

If you can, get the PBS Wonderworks video of the book as it is so true to the storyline and has a 100% British cast.

Summary: One of my childhood favorites
Review: This book has familiar fairy tale figures, such as a wicked stepmother-like Miss Minchin, a fairy godfather, and an orphan protagonist who is a princess in disguise. It's the story of a little girl who endures some setbacks but reaches a happy ending not only for herself, but for those around her whom she helps even when she's pretty downtrodden.

The writing is charming and Sara comes through as a person who is determined to maintain her values, through good times and bad. She has a definite personality and that is a good role model for any child. She stays true to her beliefs in being kind, mannerly, charitable and above all, herself.

The magic in this book is unsurpassed in children's literature. When Sara comes home, wet and cold and neglected, to find that a magician has transformed her world, you can't help but be enchanted. I will admit to reading it again now and then as an adult. The charm is still there.

Just a fun factoid; A Little Princess was originally a shorter story titled Sara Crewe, in a volume of children's novelettes by Burnett.

Summary: Every girl dreams of being a princess!
Review: If you remember seeing Shirley Temple in the 1939 "The Little Princess," this is the same basic plot with a wonderful new twist. The story is based on the beloved classic by the same author of The Secret Garden.

The movie opens with some stunningly beautiful scenes from India and all too suddenly Sara Crewe must leave with her father who is being called away for military duties. Sara has to go live in a New York boarding school. Through her experiences she learns to survive in the world and takes each day as it comes. Her vivid imagination is a pure delight and when she tells her magical stories, they are played out in a fairy tale like way onscreen. This contrasts with her real life at the school.

Sara's fun-loving spirit does get her into trouble from time to time. Overall, she is just used to living with her father and being free to do mostly what she likes. In her new school she has to follow many rules. She draws strength from her father's words to help her believe in herself. He tells her that she will always be his little princess.

A wonderful movie which shows that if we make the best of our circumstances, we will be blessed in the end. Five stars for storytelling magic!

Summary: This book deserves ten zillion stars!
Review: A Little Princess is a wonderful book, it deserves more than five stars. I really sweeps you away to another world! There are very few books like that. Once I started reading I couldn't stop! I didn't put it down until two in the morning! When you read it you can feel Sara's spell sweeping over you, it's not a murder mystery, but it's still thrilling! I think this book should be read by anyone who loves a good fairy tale! You never want this book to end! Read it!
