Rating: Summary: THE ALL-AMERICAN TEEN MOVIE Review: This movie has got to be the greatest high school-football-teen angst movie I have seen since All the Right Moves (starring Tom Cruise)!!!! This movie is for true patriots. The all-american high school boy(James VanDerBeek) is thrust into the limelight and now he has to cope with the fame. But it ain't easy when your dad wants to live his high school glory thru you and the coach is ridin' you harder the mechanical bull at the local redneck bar. I totally identify with the movie and will rent it, buy it, and watch it over and over til I know the script by heart! By the way......Tweeder is my cultural icon now!!!!! And any girl that wears a whip cream bikini at least deserves a chance. A sequel with Mox in college is highly requested!
Rating: Summary: Fun to watch Review: Varsity Blues blends comedy and drama well. Some of the humor is quite crude, there is plenty of sex and flesh, at times it is predictable-just the kind of movie many people will like. I enjoyed James Van Der Beek in the film. It does make you think about how athletics is given a super status at times. Also, it makes you think about what it takes to do what you feel is right when you know the consequences may be tough. It took me back to my high school days. I liked the movie and admit it has its faults, but it was definitely fun to watch
Rating: Summary: SO AWSOME! I COULD WATCH IT A THOUSAND TIMES! GREAT! Review: THIS WAS A GREAT MOVIE. I LOVED JAMES VAN DER BEEK AND SCOTT CAAN. TWEEDER WAS HILARIOUS! PAUL WALKER IS JUST THE FINEST GUY I'VE EVER SEEN! HE HAS MY COMPLETE ADORATION! THE CHARACTERS WERE SO REAL IN THIS MOVIE. IT IS LIKE THAT IN SMALL TEXAS TOWNS. FOOTBALL IS EVERYTHING. THE TEXAN ACCENTS WERE CUTE. I LOVE THIS MOVIE AND PLAN TO BUY IT IMMEDIATELY. THIS IS A MUST SEE. THE GUYS ARE SOOOO HOT!
Rating: Summary: Best movie about high school football! Review: It explores the world of high school football through the eyes of the star. Not only is the entire story true, it expands on the novel Friday Night Lights and does not talk about recruiting like Johnny Be Good does. This is the most entertaining movie about a real life experience, football and actions of parents and adults to take the fun out of the game. I recommend this movie to any football fan and any parent with a kid in athletics.
Rating: Summary: Judge This Film For Yourself! Lots of Questions and Lessons! Review: In today's world, it seems the greater the technical elements movies contain, the better the reviews. So too, the greater the raw violence or complete twists on human behavior also fare among those most favorably praised."Varsity Blues" doesn't have anything "high tech" about it. It's a basic high school football story. A lot of people might find it smarmy or "schlocky." Yet, the message within "Varsity Blues", while entertaining and often comic, raises some very serious issues with the adulation of high school jocks -- an ever-lasting theme in our American story. Unfortunately, too often, the story's not always that pretty. There are mean egocentric coaches who's sole aim is their own self-adulation (even if it means they will get it by making young impressionable kids suffer -- physically and emotionally.) The outcomes for many who participate in highly competitive high school (and college) football are all too often negative. The culture of jock workship doesn't accomplish much either because once the season is over, there are a lot of dreams lost and individual human beings who have left their sense of self-esteem on the field. "Varsity Blues" is a great film to look at some serious issues related to school athletics. It shows us elements of the books "Friday Night Lights" by Buzz Bissinger (about a Texas high school fanatacism) and "Our Guys" by Bernard Lefkowitz (both available on Amazon). Each of these books addresses different aspects of high schools sports and much of what is reported is not good. Both are awesomely compelling, yet frightening books! Sometimes -- even in entertainment -- we need to use our brains and take something away from a film that makes us think long after the performance. "Varsity Blues" is one of those films. Sure no incredible number of pyrotechnics, little bloodletting but MANY MANY LESSONS AND THOUGHTS TO PONDER ON HOW WE TREAT HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE ATHLETES. High Praise for this entertaining and educational film! Daniel J. Maloney
Rating: Summary: Good action, drama, and comedy all in the same breath! Review: Taking place in a fictional town in Texas, Varsity Blues is a great interpretation of teenage life and how important football is in small towns. Scott Caan puts on an amazingly hilarious debut performance as the rebelious friend Tweeter. This one's a must see
Rating: Summary: A former football players must. Review: This movie is absolutely fantastic. It is in a league of its own. Most of us have played high school football and partied like crazy after the games. I never did it like this, but I left the theater wanting to watch it again. High five to Van der Beek and Voight.
Rating: Summary: Great small town edge movie Review: If you like movies whith a little small town edge and flair you will love varsity blues! James Van Der Beek and Paul Walker look pretty goodin it too. It is also extreamly funny with a little of a dry edge!
Rating: Summary: It is this best movie i have ever seen!! Review: This movie is about my school and its Football team. We like to party after every Football Game!! They live in a small town like I do. My school thinks that football is everything!!!
Rating: Summary: I enjoyed it, but its an aquired taste Review: Okay, let's get down to the line. I hate Dawsons Creek, and I've never watched a football game for more then two seconds while flipping through channels. However, my girlfriend dragged me to this movie, telling me that I would like it. So I went in knowing that it would be stupid. But once the movie was going for a while, I have to admit, I enjoyed it. The acting wasn't great, and some of the accents were off, but it was all good enough to watch. It had a few good themes running through it, along with some great camera work, and a few small twists to move the story along better. So yes, it was a good flick in my mind. However, not everybody is going to like it. You really do have to adjust yourself for its style and if you can't, watch something else.
