Summary: My inspiration
Review: Do you feel constrained in your job? Are you an unhappy student? Then this movie is for you. I first watched the rental and I was deeply touched and inspired by it. I right away decided that this movie is worth owning, so I bought myself a copy. I don't regret it. Every time I watch it, it makes me re-evaluate my life and inspires me to go after what I value most. It makes me realize that I, too, can do what most people will tell me is impossible. It inspires me to keep trying and keep dreaming. You must own this movie so it touches and inspires everyone who visits your home.

Summary: An awesome movie that I can relate to!
Review: October Sky is one of the best movies that I've ever seen! The acting is wonderful (even from Laura Dern!) and the whole movie is wonderful! The reason that I can relate very well to this movie is because I am, like the Rocket Boys, an amatuer rocket scientist/astronomer! And that just makes October Sky all the more wonderful! This movie is a definite must-see! Enjoy!

Summary: Well worth a watch.
Review: I've seen October Sky three times and must say that it's one of the better-than-good movies to come around lately. October Sky is a good family film in my opinion and it never becomes boring or confusing. I also like the fact that it's not fiction, but based on a true story. The acting by all is very good and the cinematography and sound is quite impressive. Chris Cooper (the father) does a great job in his role especially. I don't think that this film is a classic, but I surely believe that it's a film that's above average and can be watched more than once. I actually give October Sky three-and-a-half stars. Recommended.

Summary: One Of 1999 Best Movie
Review: This is one of the best movies of 1999. It certainly deserves Oscar nods for Lora Dern, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Best Picture. Unfortunately because of it's early 1999 release I'm afraid it will be forgotten at Oscar time. It is beautifully filmed and my only criticism of the film is that they chose to film it in Tennessee and not in West Virginia where it took place. Shame on you Universal Pictures.

Summary: A movie that makes you feel good
Review: October Sky was brilliant----a first rate performance from newcomer Jake Gyllenhaal. While watching the movie, you just want to cheer for Homer; you can actually feel his ups and downs. This is a movie the whole family can enjoy.

Summary: October Sky--The best feel good movie in 5 years...
Review: Here is a movie that the whole family can sit down to and really enjoy without any violence and any real bad language. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Homer Hickam, a teenager from Coalwood, West Virginia who sees the Soviet Satellite, Sputnik, pass over and decides to rebel against his father, a coal-miner, who believes that nothing else really matters except the coal mine. Homer and three of his buddies decide to build a rocket and enter the national science fair, with no real hopes of winning, and faced with the prospect that the four young men may have a date with the coal mine. What happens next is truly magical and incredible, and what makes this story all the better is the fact that it is based on a true story.

Summary: A Top Family Movie
Review: The movie portrays growing up in McDowell County, West Virgina in the late 50's and early 60's very well. There is a small amount of bad words in it but it is nothing you don't hear kids using in that time and today. It is a fantastic story of success that can be anyone's, even today, if they will only apply themselves. The boys fought to get calculus taught in their school so they could use it in the design of the rockets. Homer didn't have good enough grades to get in the class so the other boys helped him learn calculus on his own. He had his sights set on the sky and hit the bullseye with his success in designing, building and launching the rockets at a time most people didn't have any thought that it could be done, let alone by a group of high school students. I would highly recommend this movie, October Sky and the book Rocket Boys to everyone who wants to have an enjoyable evening with the movie or several days with the book.

Summary: What A Movie Should Be
Review: For those who are looking for a clean, interesting true story with an actual plot and characters you care about, as well as a success narrative about following your dreams, this is it. I've heard both teenage boys and girls and their parents rave about it. Now THAT is a phenomenon in this world of dime a dozen, trashy, "award winning" films!

Summary: Captures the excitement of a new era being born
Review: The conflict is clear between a boy and his father, who also strives for recognition that is so easily given to his older brother. He dreams of having a better way of life and believes that it is within reach despite those who scoff at his efforts. More subtle in the film is that many people don't realize the significance of launching a satellite in outer space and the race that follows between the US and the Soviet Union. Some people think it's a silly phase that will pass. This attitude demonstrates the clashing of old attitudes with visions of things to come. It reflects the clash between generations. Some folks can't understand why the young are so excited about rockets, space and the dawning of a new age.

The character development and acting was generally very good, but the tension between father and son at times does not seem convincing. Homer dismisses much of the conflict too easily. He seems happy go lucky at all times. He is portrayed as a someone who is never defeated or frustrated with the seemingly hopeless situation he is stuck with. The one point where this feeling of losing his dream is conveyed is when he is about to descend into the mine meanwhile lookiing up at the stars and sees Sputnick pass over the night sky.

I liked the music, the story and the way the fifties were portrayed. The DVD special segment (On location) was also interesting. Cinematography was excellent.

My only criticism is that the acting was not intense and the story was rather predictable. The dialog conveyed tension and struggle in a few scenes, but what was said was brief and to the point. Not much debating the issues. With so much at stake and such obstacles to overcome I would have expected more drama to the story.

Summary: The best movie of the year!
Review: I almost gagged when my mom insisted that we rent this, but when it was over I was so glad she did. It is by far the best movie of the year. It is a heartwarming story about a boy who realizes that he has the chance to be something in the world instead of following in his father's footsteps and slaving away in a coal mine his whole life. I know it sounds cheesy, but the movie is very well executed and acted. You have to see this movie!
