Summary: Criterion does the impossible!
Review: NOTE: THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE OUT-OF-PRINT CRITERION COLLECTION DVD, AND NOT THE NEW SPECIAL EDITION.I didn't think that this could be done, But the Criterion version of SOTL makes a perfect film EVEN better! The commentary by Demme, Foster, Hopkins, Tally, and Douglas is excellent and very interesting. Deleted scenes are always welcome in my book, and the FBI files and statements from actual serial killers are not something you see everyday. Of course, the movie is mindblowing! With superb performances by Hopkins and Foster leading the pack, and brilliant direction from Demme, this had to be one of the best films of the '90s Worth spending the extra money to get the DVD features!

Review: Excellent movie. Anthony Hopkins at his best so is Judy Foster. No wonder it has won five academy awards. Some chilling drama. Movie did not deviate from its line at any point. If you want to see great performance then it is a must buy.

Review: OK, do movies get any more compelling than this one -- which features superlative performances from virtually every bit player -- not to mention two of the biggest names in the movies delivering what are probably their best performances ever? The story, with its gruesome underpinnings, is essentially a subtle and growing relationship between two lost souls, one good and one very, very bad. I thought that Demme's direction of this film was masterful, and gave you a exciting tour-de-force into the complexity and intrigue of forensic detective work, while never letting go of the many jumps, thrills and twists. Anthony Hopkins, whose Hannibal Lecter has become a mainstay of popular culture, is seductive and mesmerizing; the close-up scenes between him and Jodie Foster are electrifyingly real and yet still have that big-screen, knock-out quality you want in a big movie. Jodie Foster shines in a role that she was born to play: a loner, a person with intense psychological scars, a young woman who wants and desperately needs respect and validation. I just loved this movie, and have seen it several times. By the way, Scott Glenn is wonderfully sparse in a role that could have been showy. Not for the squeamish.

Summary: Lambs - Criterion Collection
Review: This brief review refers to the Criterion Collection on DVD. I liked it. More bang for your buck. The deleted scenes were interesting to look at and made you think why Demme didn't include them. The story boards would make great stand alone art pieces. I wish I could draw like that. I didn't care much for the classification manual or the word for word statements of various serial killers which was text only. Instead, I would have like to have seen the theatrical trailers and subtitles which are not included on this edition.

Review: this is a great movie . i din't thibk that it is asd scaryas everybody said it was and don't get me wrong it does have it's grose parts but not as much as some of todays movies . at least this movie has a piont and a good one at that . oh well . i loved this movie . it kept you on the edge of your seat ! it has its funny parts , its scary parted and its down right wierd parts but all in all it is awsome ! anotherthing that i like about this movie is that it has some lines in it that just won't let you forget the movie . every once in a while you hear or see something that makes you remember the movie . it is great ! you should deffinetly watch this movie !

Review: This movie is truly one of the best movies I have ever seen. The storyline is rivoting and the performances are brilliant. This is one of those rare movies that stays with you for weeks after seeing it. Anthony Hopkins and Jodies Foster give the performances of their lives! No horror story ever made leaves one with the impact of this movie. If you have not seen this yet, do not miss it!

Summary: The Criterion version is a must have!
Review: I have seen both versions of "Silence of the Lambs" translated for DVD, and I would vote for the Criterion version any day of the week! From the moment the disc is read by your DVD player, you will be captivated by the start-up menu, with the fluttering of moth wings that move about your surround system, to the cries of Catherine in the background, begging for help from the bottom of the well. I had goosebumps all over again. The FBI reference files were a nice touch, showing Thomas Harris' in-depth research into actuall case files, stemming back to his days as a crime reporter before becoming a successful novelist. If you're looking forward to the sequel based on the latest Harris installation, "Hannibal", then you might want to brush up with this "monster" in the mean time. It's worth the slightly higher price of it's predecessor.

Summary: Except for the background music!
Review: Two things: 1970's television music score (awful) and the total ommission of Ted Levine's performance as the killer Buffalo Bill as one of the extraordinary performances of all time in any genre. When Levine's Buffalo Bill stares down into that pit and recites a "this is a recording" set of instructions to his latest captive about rubbing lotion onto her skin, I almost had to leave the room. Just incredible. Foster, of course, magnificent, as was Hopkins. Yet another unsung performance was the mental hospital director (who IS that actor?) playing such a squealy, self-absorbed slime ball. Scott Glenn as a monitone FBI man--perfectly played. The wonder of this film is that all supporting characters were not "supporting" anything--they crackled on the screen and made the story go at lightspeed.

Summary: Great Movie + Great Extras = Fabulous DVD
Review: Everyone knows how great this movie is, so there is no need to rehash those details. What I would like to point out is the great extras on the DVD disk. The commentary is wonderful and so is the section that has the written words of serial killers. It is fascinating to read how these men think. The deleted scenes are okay, though they are of really bad quality. My only real gripe about this edition is that the image quality could have been a lot better. There is noticable dirt on the film that was used to transfer to the DVD. It doesn't distract too much though, and definately shouldn't keep you from purchasing this disk.

Summary: Criterion Colection is most definitely the way to go
Review: This film is an obvious masterpiece, but I have not seen any other reviewers comment on the Criterion Collection release on DVD. Spending the extra $7.00 on this version of the disk is so well worth it that I could probably fill half of a page blathering on and on about it. Check the special features & see for yourself what a bargain the Critereion Collection version is. Buying a standard version of this disk would simply be cheating yourself. P.S. If that is really Ted Levine in the previous review, "negligible" my ass. I'm thinking more along the lines of Best Supporting Actor. Don't sell yourself short.
