Summary: GREAT COME BACK!
Review: A friend turned me on to "The Mack" a few years ago on VHS. The DVD is great and it really enhances the film. I think this film should be appreciated as a time capsule; it's a very powerful, raw, and honest portrait of that time. Max Julien is one cool dude. I recommend this DVD to anyone who has an interest in early 70's street life.

Summary: "Now get back out there & get my money"
Review: I can recite this movie line for line and word for word. I have seen this movie at least 30 times. I have worn out the tape. I was so happy when I found out was being released on DVD. I bought it the day it came out.
Some people may think it glorifies exploitation of women or even black people, but this movie was entertaining and educating. It had a few messages in the movie, but it also told how life was in some communities.
Max Julien is "Goldie". Richard Pryor was hilarious as usual. This ... & his sidekick, "Slim", are all about the "benjamins". Goldie only shows love to one woman: his mother. He has a good heart, but in his line of business that will get you killed. He plays his position and does it quite well, so well, that all the women want him for their ....
This couldn't be a movie about street life without dirty cops. There 2 of them that sent Goldie for his bid in prison. They want to see him fall again. Does it happen? Watch the movie & find out.
This movie has become popular within the Hip Hop era. Many rappers have used parts of the dialogue on their CDs. Half of Snoop Dogg interludes from his Doggystyle album is from this movie.

Summary: Too much Hype!
Review: I had heard so much about this. Rappers talked about it. Rappers acted like him, but this film is not at all what I expected. Keeping in mind that I saw it on VHS and the quality was very questionable for Blockbuster.

Anyway, this Mack in my mind was to be a powerful pimp who took no s**t. Instead, he is a laughing all of the time, guy who seems to not be concerned with what's going on around him.

I won't go into details as I don't want to waste much more time on a film like this, but it is hard to watch and one of the corniest of the 1970's black films, or films starring more black people than white people, so they are black. I did not want to see this again. Most of those films I keep in my mind with the idea of adding them to the collection, but not this one. This film has too much hype! Where is "Three the Hard Way" on DVD?

Summary: THE BEST BLAXPLOITATION FILM EVER!
Review: I remember my parents renting THE MACK when I was about 10 or 11. I didn't watch it with them, but, throughout the years, I've heard referrences 2 it several times. I recently bought the DVD and have since watched it twice. I thought it was a pretty good movie. Almost everything within the story is laid out: why he was in Cali, why he went to prison, his reason for becoming a pimp, and why he ended up the way he did at the end of the movie. In other words, it explains in detail the cause and effects of his pimpin'. Not only that, but, the soundtrack is pretty cool. The acting could have been better, but, the film made up in other parts for what it lacked in the acting. The DVD transfer could have been better, but, you have to realize that maybe the source (the film) may have had more grain on it than one can deal with being that this film is almost 30 years old. The sound quality updates the film for the new millenium (pay 'taintion to the surround sound). I must admit that for the most part, when New Line release their films on DVD, it is more than just a movie. Now, if we can just write several letters to Warner Bros. to do the same for PURPLE RAIN!

Summary: Give Me A Break?!
Review: I understand why some people are drawn to films from this genre. I appreciate all the many brothers tryin' to perpetrate like they the Mack too. To them I say, "play on, if you know what it means". Films like The Mack echo sentiments of film culture created by certain politics and demographics during certain periods in our country's comparitively short history. With the passage of time, certain words that were once insulting or taboo become cool. With the passage of time, movies "good" parents would not let us watch also may become cool. Regardless of what year it is, or where you come from, this movie sucks! I have seen this movie several times with friends who actually like it, and I have laughed at some of the backward lines, the tripped out clothes, and that cool scene when that guy learns to fly (I'm not giving anything away here, really). This film is like a nice trip going nowhere. Max Julien does his best with the role. He's a believeable pimp. Juanita Moore is a fine actress and plays a believeable mother to his sliminess. However, the sadest thing about this movie is the fact that the actors are really pretty good. It's the movie that sucks. You have to wonder where the good jobs were. Maybe there just weren't any. A better script, a realistic plot resolution, and deeper exploration of the characters and their motives could've made this flick less jive. The budget was probably too small to get Pam Grier to come in and whip some pimpin' fools into shape. Seriously, this just ain't where it's at! ya dig?!

Summary: Steamed
Review: I'd heard about "The Mack" as a teenager in the seventies. Didn't see it until I was forty, and was definitely disappointed. The movie was trash and I hated to even rate it with a star, but the computer wouldn't let me leave it blank.

Black people are the last people on earth who should be watching such nonsense, which so thoroughly degrades and exploits Black women...Not to mention how it insults the strengthening of Blacks as a race. Goldie was a punk whose highest pathetic dream was to make him some money off the backs of unthinking women. Viewing such things was about as interesting as watching a movie that's promoting the reinstatement of slavery.
