Summary: UNBELIEVABLE!
Review: This was undoubtedly the best movie I've seen in a years! From the beginning to the end, AHX keeps you to the edge of your seat. Powerful, thought-provoking, and intense, this movie will blow everything else away. I can't understand why AHX didn't get much media coverage. I only heard about this movie from the amazon.com website and I decided to rent it before buying the DVD.

Summary: This Is The Most Riveting And Impacting Film Ever
Review: This film is truly reality, it is not fictitious such as movies like a Time to Kill, or other movies of the same genre. After watching this movie I was not able to sleep and as I am writing this review I cannot get it out of my mind. This is a movie that will keep you in your seat, because of the way it flows it does not concentrate on one specific event but on a transformation of a human being. Though this video is very graphic and some of the scenes even border on disturbing, the viewer must look beyond that and not get offended. Edward Norton delivers and unbelieavable performance although I do not feel that kids should watch this movie I heavily reccomend it to everyone else....

Summary: refuses to take the easy way out
Review: American History X provides the most objective and brilliant picture of racial tension ever filmed. As much as modern people despise what the media deems racist you cannot deny that some of what Norton's character says is true. Nor can you agree with the skinhead tactics of brutality and violence to random people because of their race. The movie allows people to make up their own minds about the issues and presents something very rare in a drama, actuall human development. One thing I did not agree with was the screen writer having Norton's father use the word nigger as that is a buzword that allows people to immediatly deem him racist without assesing his character.

Summary: Exquisite and Important
Review: My husband and I are both in our 50's and we both wept throughout this movie, and it is not superficially emotional...designed to make you cry. It is just so deeply impacting that it pierces something deep in your psyche and your spirit. I have not seen a more important motion picture in my life. Everyone of every racial and political persuasion should be required to view this film. This makes anything Spike Lee has ever done, look like idiocy. When a movie like this was out there to be made, a film that truly addresses the honest racial attitudes of real people, it makes one wonder wonder why a piece of filth like "He's Got Game" was even allowed to go into distribution. I hope Spike has seen this one.

Summary: Best of the year...
Review: This was certainly one of the best films of the year. As many others have praised Edward Norton's performance here, I won't reiterate.

One of the things that I found most disturbing about this film was the way in which it showed that a talented and intelligent speaker (Norton) can make racism sound sensible, even logical. To be watching the film and find yourself agreeing with with the internal logic of statements made by Norton is scary. I shows the potential for hatred present in everyone.

I can't give it five stars (I reserve that for films such as "Greed" or "Citizen Kane"), but it is certainly the best film of '98 and certainly one of the best films of the last decade (or two). Way worth seeing.

Summary: Harsh and Painful Reality
Review: This movie did not follow any formula and kept me and my husband riveted to the screen. Glorification of either side was not made and one of the excellent qualities of the movie was that one could somewhat emphathize with both sides. The characters were complex, not the typical one dimensional cardboard figures generally onscreen. Additionally, this film mirrors reality as much as any movie possibly can. But because of that, this movie is incredibly intense and has extremely graphic sex and violence. And don't forget to have your tissue handy; even my husband cried!

Summary: Incredible
Review: I don't want to give away any of this movie because it is something you definately need to experience for yourself. Honestly I can say it was the most incredible movie I have seen maybe ever. Edward Norton is the best part of the movie as far as I am concerned. His character is totally believable and takes you along on his emotional and intellectual rollercoasters. All the other characters are wonderful and are definately able to keep your attention. If you like movies that look at social problems in a different way, keep you intrigued and let you think, this is definately a good way to spend two hours.-BH

Summary: The Worst Film of '98 (or The Reason I Wish I Give 0 Stars)
Review: Oh, how this film is trash. Let me count the ways. First, the acting is bad. Edward Norton plays the 2 roles fine -- The role before prison and the role after prison -- but the rest of the cast is horrible with meaningless uninteresting performances by all particularly Edward Furlong, Stacey Keach and Elliot Gould. Second, the direction (when not dealing with glossy, MTV style ultra-violence) could not be worse. The whole film has this "what-does-this-thing-do" look to it. Where visuals and angles are used only because they can. Third, the ham-handed usage of black and white versus color. The script is horrible. The dialogue is bad. The story structure is bad. The character development is worse then the character development in "Showgirls." By time the meaningless climax you will be thinking to yourself, "Who cares." It is stupid, with only a couple scenes of distinct violence to redeem itself. At all costs, spare yourself the epic waste of time that is "American History X."
