Summary: puzzling
Review: A review of this movie is pointless. Ed Norton is brilliant. Wow..

Summary: Shockingly real and brutal, a great movie
Review: American History X is one of those rare movies that makes us look at the world and see things a little differently. It is brutally realistic and very disturbing at times. The film is about racial hatred and brutal violence that comes along with it. Edward Norton's performance is stunningly good, and why he didn't get the Oscar is a mystery. It is a film that will make you look at things and see them a little differently. It is splendidly made, and a gripping movie. At parts you want to look away, but you can't. Be warned though: it has very explicit scenes of sex and violence.

Summary: SEE IT!!!
Review: I did many movie critiquing classes in college, but I'm not going to give you a Roger Ebert review. All I'll say is this: you must see this movie. It is probably the hardest hitting and most truthful movie you will ever see about the "other" side of racism. Believe it or not, racism does go both ways, and it takes two to tango. Edward Norton was robbed when he didn't receive the oscar for best actor. See it, you will not be sorry!

Summary: ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE.
Review: this movie was shocking and entertaining and moving and disturbing and, above all, incredible.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Very powerful, but flawed in too many places
Review: What makes this movie work is Edward Norton, who has your hair standing on end as Derek Vinyard, a neo-Nazi skinhead who has a painful but real epiphany and gives it up. He drives the movie, and close behind him is Edward Furlough as his younger brother Danny who's greatly in danger of falling into the same trap. There are several scenes which rivet you with their power. But there are also a lot of holes which are frustrating.

Wouldn't it take just a little longer than one night for Derek to be able to root out all of the garbage that gathered in his brother's head while Derek was doing time? The scene where Derek and Danny's father (in flashback) warns his older son about "nigger literature" seemed shoehorned in towards the end of the film as a way of saying that the sins of the father, etc.. It was a lot more frightening before that scene when you couldn't figure out why the death of Derek's father turned Derek, who is articulate and intelligent throughout, into such a hateful monster.

Finally, with the exception of Norton, Furlough, Avery Brooks as a schoolteacher who taught and counsels both boys, and the actor who plays Derek's co-worker in the prison laundry room, the other characters are ciphers and the actors playing them don't do much with their roles. Particularly disappointing are Beverly D'Angelo as the boys' mother and Elliott Gould as a suitor of hers. The roles are ill-defined and neither actor does much more than look ineffectual, particularly when on-screen with Norton.

But I have to give this four stars in the end because the movie manages to rise above the flaws it contains and deliver a tragic morality play about how unthinking hatred can destroy. You owe it to yourself to see it.

Summary: PLEASE, DON`T HATE HUMAN RACE.
Review: Well, I am mexican an d saw the film about eight times (home video). I`m certain that It woul d be worth it to stop all of the anger of any kind within us. within myself. People aprobe only on those who are or look or act like them. I am not saying it`s wrong or wright but I don`t want to do it anymore. I see my little son, Sebastian, and think, I don`t want him to hate or to be hated, and for that reason I have to teach him to love himself and the others, even if they are absolutely different, teach him to have respect. First, I will have to learn, and no matter how many times I see the movie I will always learn from it to see my own mistakes, on dealing with anger and frustation. In a way I am racist, because I don`t tolerate a lot of things that really are not important, even to myself, so I become Derek, when I get in to trouble because of my "rightfullness" I also become Derek. I want to see the film over and over, perhaps one day I get to change and to love instead of to hate. I think I could begin by loving Edward Norton (ha, that was a jocke) . Don`t be a Nazy to yourself or to anyone. Or at least try. That`s what I end up thinking. Best movie, best director, best actors, best message.

Summary: Edward who?
Review: Once again, Edward Norton shows us high quality, top class acting. "You see this?!, it means not welcome!"

Summary: A Must-See (let's deal with a little reality)
Review: The average movie or TV program has little to deal with the real hardships of racism in the United States. Face the fact, it is still out there (sad to say). This movie touched on the issue in an extremely powerful way. I know that most people can't stomach it, but it is worth seeing. It has got to be one of the best movies I have seen in the last two years. Rent it or buy it. If you can get past the first scene, you can make it through the movie. It will leave you shocked and in thought. Believe me, it's no Titanic and thank God it's not. Ed Norton takes on every dimension of his character. Part of you will want to hate him and part of you will want to love him. He'll strike fear in you and slowly caress your heart to a state of reflection and empathy.

Summary: Gut wreching and thought provoking, but not for all
Review: After seeing this movie, I was left in a state of total shock. Several times in the movie, I blinked and winced at the terrifying intensity that Norton and Furlong convey. However, it should be warned that this movie is not for all. I'm an avid fan of horror and war films, and often times the most violent scenes don't get a reaction from me. But this movie was so absolutely shocking at times that I wanted to close my eyes. In retrospect, I almost wish I hadn't watched it. It's a very good film, but with scenes that may disgust you enough not to enjoy it.

I give this movie 3 out of 5 stars because I know it isn't for everyone. From the movie reveiwer aspect, the movie would get a 5 out of 5. But I personally couldn't stomach much of it, and somewhat regret seeing it. However, if you can handle intense drama with extreme violence, it may be for you. One warning: this movie also contains very explicit sex, including a prison rape scene that probably could have been edited a little. The movie also surpasses the likes of Jackie Brown and Pulp Fiction for profanity- which is quite a feat. I personally think these things could have been left out.

Summary: Excellent Film About Urban Blight
Review: It's quite interesting to read the comments below about the "scourge" of racism from people who probably live in lily white areas. Derek Vinyard's father was MURDERED by a negro whilst doing his job as a firefighter (probably to save a negro). But this film, although excellent because of the realistic ending, leads you to believe his father was the sinner. As someone from New York City who has seen once beautiful European neighborhoods turn into slums because of Third World Immigrants and Blacks, like Venice Beach, CA, Derek Vinyard DID espouse some truisms, unpleasant as they are to some. But the majority of White Americans (and Canadians) swallow what they read in the media and spout the liberal party line about the Evil White Man. Great civilizations rise through shared beliefs and commonality (Greece, Rome, the British Empire, early America). They also fall through dissension from within (Rome's letting in the Barbarians, the clamor against colonialism in the British Empire) and pretty much giving up. American has pretty much given up. Gentleman, the Barbarians are at the GATES. And THEY ARE COMING YOUR WAY.
