Review: One of the best movies of all time full of reality, bonding, drama and tears. I took my mom to see this movie in 1993 for her birthday. Then bought it recently on DVD. Excellent performaces by Tim and Morgan with and excellent plot. A must have!

Summary: Friendship leads to redemption.
Review: Stephen King's short novel Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redempton was the first person narrated tale of how a friendship between a murderer and an unjustly imprisoned, and quite special, man reawakened the murderer's soul. Although Tim Robbins plays the character the events of the story revolve around, it is his effect on Morgan Freeman's narrating character that is the film's true focus, for it is the slow forming of that emotional bond that gives this beautifully made film its power. Highly recommended.

Summary: Tim, all is forgiven - you have carte blanche
Review: I recently caught "Shawshank Redemption" during one of its 962 yearly showings on TNT (whenever they're not playing "Top Gun"). I won't try to encapsulate my rapture like the other reviewers have done here (almost) uniformly and very effectively. It's as good or better than every word written on these pages.What I will say is that I savaged Tim Robbins' "Cradle Will Rock" in an earlier review, and now after seeing "Shawshank Redemption," I'm feeling no small bit of remorse about that. Robbins' stunning work in "Shawshank" gives him the absolute right to pursue projects like "Cradle." Tim, if you're out there: sorry about that, man. Keep those creative juices flowing.

Summary: Wow, What a Surprise!!!
Review: I am the 480th reviewer and am also giving this movie 5 stars. The Shawshank Redemption, in my opinion, is one of the greatest movies ever made. I just happened to watch this movie while reading Viktor E. Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning." Both dovetail perfectly in elaborating on the human spirit. This movie also contains the most gratifying ending of any movie except maybe "The Sixth Sense."

Summary: Plodding, over=done, stereotypical prison picture
Review: Hey, sorry but it is true. The Shawshank Redemption is nothing more but a modern day update of a 1930's prison picture. Lets see....
1.) Innocent man sent to jail for crime he did not commit
2.) Crooked guards
3.) Malignant Warden who manipulates prisoners and the system
4.) Saintly fellow convicts who spout metaphysical wisdom like Grandpa on Walton's mountain.
5.) Edgy violence when hero is attacked by fellow inmates (supposed to show the terror of everyman).
6.) Hero appears to be co-opted by the system but then tiumphs with a semi-spiritual redemption leading to the come-uppence of his tormentors. That pretty much sums up the plot of Shawshank, nothing but a formula picture that you have seen before. In that way I guess it is comfortable in that it breaks absolutely NO NEW GROUND, it is a re-hash of all the prison pictures that came before it. Shawshank Redemption? They should all get the chair as it has NO SOCIALLY REDEEMING VALUE to use the prison parlance. After all the only message I got from it was that white collar crime pays if you are slick.

Summary: Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying
Review: The Shawshank Redemption is, simply, one of my all-time favorite films. Each aspect of the film clicks brilliantly, and the result is a film that is both unforgettable and an instant classic. Nominated for seven academy awards, including best picture and actor it is a story that takes place in the 1940's about a young banker named Andy Dufrane(Tim Robbins) who is falsely accused of murdering his wife and is sentenced to life in the Shawshank Prison. Andy's manner is quiet, patient and seemingly emotionless. He's not the type to wear his heart on his sleeve, or to cry in public. He leads his life by his own way and knows how to live it. Unlike Andy, his best friend Red(Morgan Freeman) has a more pessimistic outlook in life and is embraced by Andy's character. This movie shows you hope and inspiration can lie even in the darkest of times. Surprizingly enough the story was a novella by Stephen King called Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.

Review: I first watched this movie when i was 14 and even then i realized how incredible a story it was. Without getting into plot, i'm going to say this was the greatest movies of the 90's, if not ever. The story is powerful and the charaters fit it perfectly. The ending is a true masterpeice, and the revenge is sweet. Stephen king is truely a great writer

Summary: Masterpiece
Review: (...)I didn't like it because it was sentimental. I liked it because of it's genious storyline. I love the story line. It makes you stop and think about what you do, why you do it, you just think about everything. I do agree that the Green Mile is horrible, and no even comparable to this. I enjoyed Morgan Freeman's nice, pleasurable tone on the narration and I think Tim Robbins plays his part masterfully. It is very well directed and, even though it goes at a very mellow and slow rate, you never get bored. The characters are so interesting that you have to know what happens to them. There are lots of twists and turning points in the story, and the last half hour of this film is the most enjoyable half-hour you'll ever see. Go and rent this movie. It isn't for everyone, but it is a remarkable film.
