Rating: Summary: Don't let Matt Damon turn you off. Review: This film has a lot working against it. At the top of the list is of course, the overexposed Damon, who is one of the most irritaing actors working today. John Malkovich's Russian gambler is so over-the-top and inconsistent that he makes Damon almost paletable. What saves the film is the incredible performance of Edward Norton. He manages to play an out of control loser with such grace and elegance that he makes the rest of the cast look like community theater performers.
Rating: Summary: Just okay. Review: I've seen this flick yesterday with my bro.My friends told me to never watch this movie. They told me it was realy borring. But the answer was yes.Rounders was an alright movie. It has a few technical words, but it was okay.It wasn't that entertaining, and I liked the style of this movie.(Except acting)But before you see this flick,I think you'll have to learn about poker.
Rating: Summary: Tight drama in the tradition of the Hustler. Review: Sweet movie about the Underground Poker scene in N.Y. Many big names including Matt Damon and John Malcovich spice up a modern version of the Hustler. Saw this and the theaters, but the effect comes across better on the smaller, more intimate screen. Portrays addiction and gambling better than most such movies.
Rating: Summary: Not good, not even close Review: This movie blows. Edward Norton and Matt Damon are good actors, but this is a terrible film for no other reason than that I don't believe them in these roles one tiny bit. Norton thinks he's "Mean Streets"-era De Niro and guess what? He's not. Who knows what Damon is doing but his supposedly know-all voice-over is laughable. As out of place as these guys are, they're the BETTER part of the cast. Malkovich has the WORST Russian accent ever. I expect better from him. Yet the lowest of the low is Gretchen Mol who proves that a pretty face doesn't translate well to the screen when you have a speaking part. Her attractiveness quotient plummets in this film. Hopefully she'll stick to being motionless on magazine covers from here on out, but I know that we can't be that lucky. You want a good movie with cards as a backdrop? Get "House of Games" which is infinitely better than this mess.
Rating: Summary: Great viewing for card players only; others need not apply Review: This movie will appeal mostly to those who accept the depicted alternative lifestyle; others will be wondering "where the action is". If you play cards, you will absolutely want to see this one (****). If you don't, rent "Primal Fear", "In the line of Fire" or see "Saving Private Ryan" instead for your Norton/Malcovich/Damon fix (**). Damon is better than average as the pretty boy flawed "hero, but the movie really belongs to the slimy Norton as Worm and to Malkovich, who pretty much steals every scene he's in. Gretchen Mol is wasted here; she could have (and should have) phoned in her performance. This is the writer's prerogative and not an indictment of Mol. She's nice eye candy but has no substance in this movie. Landau is OK but his part could have been played by any number of aging but competent actors. The story is a little stale, with the finale telegraphed as a given but not before our boys go through some pretty interesting paths to get there. You have to wonder why Damon puts up with Norton's antics for "friendship" when it's obvious Norton's idea of friendship ends in a $. You further have to wonder how Damon can read people so well at the table and still not be able to see the writing on the wall early on regarding Norton and Mol. Compare this movie to the earlier card sharp classic "The Cincinnati Kid" starring Steve McQueen and E.G.Robinson. You will find a similar plot line. However, The Rounders is quite a bit darker and nastier. The main characters are more severely flawed and altogether less likable than those in "Kid". It's too bad Landau is no Robinson (nor is Damon any McQueen for that matter). Malcovich comes close to perfection, though. For those interested in the art and dark world of professional cardsharking and the shady characters that inhabit it, this somber tale rates 4 stars and will be a most fulfilling ride. For all those others, it will be a rather sedate and mystifying romp in front of the tube waiting for Buffy or NYPD Blue to finally make an appearance.
Rating: Summary: Characters Rather Than Plot Review: Another stand-out performance by excellent young actor, Edward Norton
Rating: Summary: excellent movie...sad dvd Review: Although I loved this movie because i am a Matt damon fan, I don't think I should have to review the movie, ren it first if you like it buy it, if not don't. But the dvd itself is just sad. I rented it, and Im glad Idid because there are absolutey no extras on this disk. No alternate audio, no coming attractions, no bonus material whats so ever, padon me there are four covers for movies 3 years old. The movie is excellent, the dvd is beyond sad, I'll buy it because like I said i like Damon, but 20.00 beans is a bit much for this title, however i would be willing to pay 12.99 or somewhere there abouts
Rating: Summary: Underated by the critics... Review: A terrific movie that is a must see for the weekend poker player as well as the general public. "We can't run from who we are, our destiny chooses us"... The film portrays Matt Damon as a young man following his calling... The movie is easily put down by those who have a strong dislike for gambling. Understandably, many will be unable to applaud the choices made by the main character as he follows his calling into an unpopular profession.
Rating: Summary: Ante up for this poker thriller Review: This film is a must see for the general public and a must own for the poker fan. Matt Damon gives a realistic performance as a poker ace with the uncanny ability to calculate odds and read people at the table. If your a card player, this movie will get your blood pumping and make you want to get the cards in the air!
Rating: Summary: Realist portrayal of the underground poker scene. Review: I was amazed to find such a realistic view of poker players and their lifestyles. The tech people on this movie must be commended.
