Summary: A Sorrowfull Must-See
Review: This movie is the type of movie that you would never want to see again- but be horribly short-changed if you didn't see it at all. A ground breaking film, it explores the psychological aspect of solders in war; what makes them kill, what makes them fight on, and the horror expierianced on both sides of the gun. It also explores the solder's relation to it's country, in that you are bound to wonder after all is said and done, did the U.S. have the right to decide if which man's life was important enough to send a small troop after him? In smaller terms, who got to live, and who got to die. Watch it. It's brilliant. Yet I guarantee you, you will not want to see it again, though you will be glad you saw it in the first place.

Summary: Superb combat scenes but little else.
Review: The first 30 minutes are far and away the best combat scenes ever filmed in peace time. Savagery, chaos and incomparable courage. No words can adequately describe them except to say that they should not be viewed by the faint of heart.Our WWII veterans are long overdue in terms of the appreciation or lack thereof given by the public at large. Unfortunately, this film only touches on the most elemental truths about war and the many diverse warriors who participate. The film certainly makes a statement just not necessarily the strongest statement. For that you need to check out the monumental masterpiece 'The Thin Red Line' and the so often overlooked 'When Trumpets Fade'. It's a story that deserves to be told I just think that there are better vehicles to pay homage (in their entirety) to our veterans than this one.

Summary: Saving Private Ryan
Review: As a serious student of World War II and having served in the military for 9 years, I have seen just about all the WWII films made. One thing that has been missing from all the films I have seen prior to Private Ryan was a realistic portrayal of what combat is really all about. I agree with Mr. Ambrose (the historian quoted in Into the Breach) that this film stands alone in capturing what it was like visually in combat in World War II. Far more than that, though, is the stunning emotional impact this film has on those who really understand what the story is all about. This isn't just another war film, it will go down as the final definitive statement on the US role in World War II and the impact it had on an entire generation - on the battlefield and in the homes of those serving. If anyone wants to really understand the sacrifices made on our behalf today, this film must be seen.

Summary: a war the can never be forgotten......
Review: before i viewed this movie, i honestly knew very little on world war 2. my mother's father was a war hero of ww2 and she urged me to see spr, because i never had the privelage to meet him. i rememer the whole movie experience exactly. when the battle on the beach scene showed, i had my head down and became nervous. but, out of curiousity, i peeked my eyes up realising this movie would not be an easy film view. after this movie, i was filled with soo many emitions. i felt pride for my grandpa, fear for any war, sadness, and i felt thankful that these men fought for us. i look up to steven speilberg for making this film, because i learned and saw what world war 2 was all about. and i learned that war is an ugly and a sad thing and it is real, not just something you read from the history textbooks. it happened, and real men died. i recomend this movie for those teenager and adults who truly don't know what war really is. i, for one, learned a lot from this movie experience.

Review: This movie is very awsome it has a cool story line and is completely historicaly accurate. no sex, but lots of violence and lanuage. I would recomend this movie to anyone older than 13.

Summary: Most realistic movie yet!
Review: I think Saving Private Ryan was the best and most realistic movie yet. A good performance by Tom Hanks. It was very exciting and unpredictable on what was going to happen next. It was suspenseful and had a little of everything; action, war, suspense, thriller, drama, and to some extent comedy. I give it 5 stars!

Review: the only thing missing was the smell of dead bodys and burning gun powder. BEST MOVIE, IT WAS EXACTLY LIKE "D-DAY".

Summary: Let's do a thought experiment...
Review: at the end of this review. Now, granted, the battle scenes--horrific and almost hallucinogenic in intensity--are the best ever filmed. But minus them, what we have is a movie that is more than a little stupid, maudlin and sterotyping. Problems with stupidity arise almost immediately; even though the German defenders are understrength and could have been swept away by artillery, the Americans decline to do so and instead drop their landing ramp right in front of a machine gun! Gee, why didn't Spielberg just paint big red bull-eye's on all of the soldiers? All movies require a suspension of disbelief, but this is a bit too much. And then the miliary sends a squad to extract one man? Duh! And now on to the stereotyping...it's bad enough to have big dumb Italians, a religious Sergeant York southerner, loud-mouthed Jews, compassionate medics, cowardly pacifists and an Emerson-quoting intellectual, but the worst is the portrayal of the Germans as _sub-human._ They are such brutal, treacherous, cowardly shaven-headed thugs, such despicable _animals,_ that the Americans shoot them in the back as they run away, shoot them as they try to surrender, and incinerate them without even a mercy bullet. One loud-mouthed GI tauts POWS with "Juden, Juden." Think maybe most were draftees and glad the war was over? (As bad as _The Thin Red Line_ was, at least the Japanese were portrayed as human beings.)Oh, yes, the thought experiment. Imagine the Germans as Israelis. Imagine the Americans as Arabs. Now imagine the uproar. Why? I suppose it depends of whose ox is being gored. This is a very good film, but it's propaganda.

Summary: It is one of the best war movies made...
Review: But it still is a war movie and as such it is for people who like war movies. I personally do not so my opinion is very subjective. In my opinion the movie showed the war as it is with very high detail and would probably be recommended to people who have no problem with watching people loosing their arms and legs with a lot of blood everywhere. The idea of the movie was really good but there was too much blood for me.

Summary: Seen It Before! By Far Not the Best War Movie
Review: I have seen many great war movies from Full Metal Jacket to Glory and both have given the tremendous aspects of war. For Full Metal Jacket, it was the grittiness of the General(not 100% sure of his rank), for Glory it was strong about racism. But in Saving Private Ryan, I've seen it all and the open scene really set the tone for a dull movie with no special theme. Were soldiers really that stupid back then? Okay, fine, they're looking for Private Ryan just for American pride. I think you can get that American pride from many Hollywood movies. I'm not saying it's a totally horrible film but if you're going to make me sit for 3 hours, I better see something new. I think Tom Hanks and Gary Sinise are great actors; they just need a new script with a promising plot.
