Summary: William Shakespeare would be ashamed
Review: This was the worst adaptation of a Shakespeare work I have ever been unfortunate enough to watch. There was no originality in updating the family feud to a fight between gangs. Have we seen West Side Story? And the fact that the final scene in the movie was changed was revolting. The reason they committed suicide was to defy fate. It's hard to do that when I expect to hear Homer Simpson say "Doh!" as Juliet wakes up to a dying Romeo. The most insulting part of the film had to be the balcony scene that took place in a pool. Where did that come from? Ugh. Not to mention the fact that for the entire movie Claire Danes displays fewer emotions than inanimate objects. Read the play or see the 1968 Zefferelli adaptation, spare yourself this teenybopper melodrama.

Summary: This contained most of Shakespeare's original lines!!!
Review: I must confess, I am a Shakespeare addict. However, when someone makes a remake of a dear Shakespeare play, I end up hating it. This, however, was a sensous and action- packed film. Leonardo Dicaprio and Claire Danes were stunning. Despite some shakiness with Shakespeare's language, they were stellar. Claire was perfect for her role, and all actors took on a modern way of acting for this movie. The best thing about this movie was the art direction. From the aquarium to the neon crosses in the church, this movie had the best look I have seen in my entire life. I am not a fan of pop, so the soundtrack was bothersome, but I could live with it. Also, the first scene was ridiculous. Still, this movie shined, and any other grown adult who says otherwise did not have an open mind. After all, I am a purist and I loved it!

Summary: A Break-Through! New Audience Understands Shakespeare!
Review: Though the text is chopped considerably, after spending time trying to teach a group of high school students about scansion and other aspects of Shakespearen text with very little enthusiastic responses, I have difficutly criticizing this film which suddenly excited and moved the same students about the same story. It is a Romeo and Juliet for the nineties and it succeeds because it goes all the way in making its choices. Luhrmann manages to get the point of the play across while making the play accessible to a modern audience. For instance, shifting the strong homosocial bond between Romeo and Mercutio to a homosexual crush of Mercutio on Romeo brings the film into the 90's using Mercutio's textual jealousy of Romeo's relationship with Juliet as its substansiation. Don't watch it for a definitive R&J, but watch it to understand what this story means in a modern, not an historical, context.

Brilliant.

Summary: really good movie
Review: this movie was awesome, its not my fave or anything, but leo was hot and claire was really pretty. although the acting could have been better, i think this version helps our generation understand shakespeare a lot more. and since im doing a report on romeo & juliet, i found this totally helpful.

Summary: Romeo & Juliet
Review: This was a good movie, but it's kind of weird to see modern times with Shakespeare's (i have no idea how to spell that) language. I can say this though, it is much better to watch the movie than read the script!

Summary: The Prettiest Movie Ever Made
Review: Baz Luhrmann is so so so cool- - he's the sunscreen song guy, and he is one of our greatest artists today! I really loved the clothes, especially Leo's hawaiian shirts.

Summary: Total waste of time and money!!!!!!
Review: I tried to watch this movie with an open mind, but after I saw Mercutio, I just wanted to turn it off. I also had a hard time seeing modern times and hearing Shapearean language. To me, it just didn't work. Also, I thouhgt that Claire Daines lacked animation during the pool scene (who thought of this scenery addition?) She almost sounded like she was reading her lines from a script. Leo is a much better actor than what I saw in this movie. He went from speaking in a monotone voice to screaming. (Leo and Claire must have taken acting lessons at the same place) He seems to think that screaming out his emotions is acting. He did a much better job in Titanic. The only reason all of these teenage girls think he can act is because he is sort of cute. (Ah, love is blind) If you like Shakespeare and you want to see it done right, rent the 1968 version. It is a thousand times better than the so-called modern one and as an added bonus, the actors know how to act!

Summary: totally way cool
Review: this film is a best classic remake i've ever seen it fulfills the teens dream of a cool romance thought the dialogues are quite too classical.
