Summary: BLOWs the rest away
Review: This film once again proves that johnny depp is a friggin' awesome actor. Even though he plays one of the worst drug dealers ever, you still feel sorry for his character. Supporting acting is good, but his mother is annoying. Last, but not least, the soundtrack kicks ass. The Stones, and various other bitchin' songs. To sum it all up: friggin' amazing, it really got me interested in the real george jung and cocaine smuggling from columbia to the US.
PS- depp's sunglasses are bitchin'!!!!

Summary: Terrific flick...no matter what the dude from boston says
Review: This is a great film...first of all as far as historical accuracy this film nails it where it counts. I.e. the names of cartels and dealers within the U.S. are totally accurate. 2nd the film is brilliant because it shows the highs and lows of making money illegally. Whether the dude from boston who gave this one star knows it or not...if the right things had happened to him...he could be a George Jung himself. P.S. to the dude in boston, hope they get that whole drinking water situation fixed up there...its really affecting your mental health.

Summary: About as "true" as Peter Pan
Review: The Colombian drug scenes just crack me up. Depp flies into Medellin to meet Saint Pablo and set up a distribution program. First, Medellin is a cosmopolitan city in the middle of the lush South American Andean coffee region, not some decrepit village the middle of the Mexican desert. The Colombian drug mafia: Even the low level assistants and guards drive (and have always driven) the best European imported vehicles, not broken down Chevy Suburbans and Jeeps. In fact, they don't even sell those vehicles in Colombia. The taxis are Renaults and the farmers drive Land Rovers. Of course this is the typical American ignorance of Latin America that assumes that all of "them" south of the Rio Grande are the same. Okay, so all the scenes in Latin America are bogus clichés, what about the rest of the movie.

We are supposed to feel sorry for some poor beggar who distributes cocaine because he wants to be a good son and father. How could the FBI and DEA set up this poor guy and then put him in prison for the rest of his productive life? Don't they realize that he has to take care of his little girl who depends on him? And how could those evil women (his mother and his wife) turn him in to the police and betray his trust?

Give me a break! The world would have been better off if this loser had never been born, so don't even try to get me to feel sorry for him. Nuf said!

Summary: Same narrative pull as in Goodfellas
Review: When this movie started and Johnny Depp was using the voice over to introduce the audience to his childhood and Ray Liotta pops out of frikkin' nowhere it reminded me of that same Goodfellas drive that this movie offers. Don't confuse yourself with what I say, this movie is definitely not as close as good to Goodfellas but if has a decent story line of the life of the first man to bring cocaine into the u.s.(yeah right!) to deal it. This movie has a good cast and I don't really mind that they [copied] the same narrative structure from Goodfellas, I thought the movie was decent and was good at portraying the life of a drug dealer. If your into movies about crime and trying to achieve the 'impossible' then this is definitely worth a look!

Summary: Blow is an old fashioned morality tale
Review: Beneath its cool, cool surface, blow is an old fashioned morality play about the importance of hard work and family. The right virtues are exemplified by Johnny Depp's father. While Depp achieves great success, it is all based on a lie and eventually his world comes crumbling down and he loses it all. Loosely based on an autobiography, the film never discards its moralistic edge. Indeed you begin to scream at the characters not to be so stupid. But drugs and big money can take their toll. You would think after the first ten million dollars most people would just stop, but the characters lurch onto their destruction.

I did feel some sympathy for the central character but then I realised that he helped make the Colombian cocaine kings rich and remembered the devastation that they caused in that country. I think he got off pretty lightly. At least his daughter is still alive.

Summary: Love letter to a drug dealer?
Review: I love gangster movies like Scarface and The Godfather, and Johnny Deep is clearly one of our best actors, so this movie looked like a winner. Boy was I wrong. Badly written, badly directed, and completely misguided. Nothing happens in this movie except an unappealing scumbag drug dealer gets arrested over and over. Why should we care? How this man's story ever got told is a mystery to me. It's like Hollywood wanted to make a eulogy to their favorite drug dealer. We even get a loving picture of the real man at the end. Sigh. Really, I wasn't offended by this film, I just found it incredibly BORING. ... leave this dog on the shelf.

Summary: Blow chunks at this sapfest
Review: I liked the movie. I didn't think the acting was bad, and the story was interesting of the life and times of George Jung. However, as the movie progressed, I got the feeling that the director was trying to JUSTIFY Jung's lifestyle. When Jung is a boy and his dad goes bankrupt, he makes a vow to never live like that...to never have to worry about money. Ok, fair enough. Millions of people agree with you...they're called doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc... people with enough integrity and humanity to NOT resort to poisoning the masses with a deadly drug to further their own expensive lifestyle.

And while I was amused at the scene of Edward Scissorhands, PeeWee Herman, and Shakes the Clown snorting coke together, the movie portrays thievery and drug dealing as almost comical. Chuckle with the criminals as they fumble and bumble their way through the theft of an airplane. Gasp a sigh of relief as a custom officer barely overlooks the suitcase of cocaine that Jung is smuggling through the airport. Me personally...I was hoping the whole movie he'd get caught, and I cheered each time he did.

At the end of the movie, Jung ends up in prison again, this time for the rest of his life. And behind the bangs of a bad whig, we see the pitiful face of a man who's daughter won't visit him in prison. And? Who cares? Am I really supposed to feel sorry for this creep? If I were Jung's kid, I'd do everything I could to distance myself from that subhuman waste of flesh.

So while objectively I say it was a decent movie, I reject it on principle. On a moral scale, I give this movie negative five stars. As for Jung himself...enjoy hell. I hope it was worth it.

Summary: A superb film with great acting...
Review: This true-life adaptation stars Johnny Depp in what is certainly one of the greatest performances of his career. This superbly acted, beautiful film is one of the better movies I have seen in ages. Sadly, the director (Jonathan Demme) passed away shortly after this film was released, and this was his last film.

The video and audio quality of the movie are great, and if you have a home theater, you will greatly appreciate these qualities. Also, the DVD contains many extra features, some of which are quite enjoyable. Highly recommended!

Summary: Well acted, but emotionally empty.
Review: Johnny Depp gives an interesting performance as George Jung in "Blow," but I didn't like this film, nor did I understand its points. Was I supposed to care for Jung? His actions brought about the deaths of thousands and ushered in the current state of drugs in America. He lived in decadence by helping others ruin their lives. He lost his money, and he kept making mistakes, getting involved with drug trade when he should've gotten out of it.

The film seems, to me, to want you to sympathize with Jung, yet, as a viewer, you cannot. He is not a hero.

When he loses his daughter in the end, it's not sad. It's fitting.

Ted Demme, who died one year after directing this, created an interesting film, but it's one that seems to make a hero out of a man who doesn't fit the mold.
