Summary: One of those rare films...
Review: that is for kids and adults. Just about everything in this movie was well done (notwithstanding the complaint about the waterfall). I liked the humor, the songs, and the acting. I'm in my 30's and to this day I still quote lines from the movie. Well worth owning.

Summary: Should have made the AFI list!!
Review: I am with the majority who "LOVES" this movie, who thinks it IS the "BEST", who can't wait to "share it with my children" and thought Veruca Salt was the best, the brat we all loved to hate. This movie brings back so many wonderful childhood memories. I can remember watching it for the first time when I was five eating a pan of fundge as I watched in awe. It was released the year I was born and I always have to watch it when I catch it on TV. The music is wonderfully nostalgic and the special effects were incredible to me, a child of the 70s. I hate to hear people bash this movie. To so many, it is an all time favorite. And to the overly analytical critics, who wonder why Charlie was rewarded after imbibing in Fizzy-lifting soda, he was a regular kid who at one time or another did something he was not supposed to. He was not innately spoiled and shallow like the others. HE GAVE BACK THE EVERLASTING GOBSTOPPER FOR GOD'S SAKES! THAT was the final and true test. I learned something every time I watched this timeless classic.

Summary: Pure Fun and Fantasy
Review: I absolutely loved this movie! The characters, the morals, and the story were all fantastic. My niece (12 years old) has declared it her "favorite movie of all time". I know that there are parts in the movie that are kind of psychedelic, but hey, it was the 70's. If you're in your 20's, take another look at the clothes your parents dressed you in and realize that things were all pretty much "out there" back then. Also, I think that Gene Wilder does such a great job in this film....I can't think of anyone who could do a better Willy Wonka.

Summary: Superb entertainment for all ages
Review: Recently picked up the DVD version of this movie - what a treat to see the restored print, and especially the stereo soundtrack at 48 KHz! One of my all-time favorite movies. Many reviewers here have gotten the quotes wrong... "Pay attention, children..." :-). Thanks to Roald Dahl, David Wolper and the rest of the cast for this film. "So shines a good deed in a weary world." Anyone with "psychological damage" from watching this film as a kid had to have been a soap bubble to begin with. Feel free to Email me and discuss favorite scenes, but flame mail will be reported to your ISP ... Tim, born 1964

Summary: MY ALL TIME FAVORITE CHILDREN'S VIDEO!
Review: WORKING FOR A PEDIATRICIAN, I AM THE PERSON WHO SELECTS THE MOVIES THAT WE SHOW IN THE OFFICE. THE ONE I SHOW MOST OFTEN IS WILLY WONKA, AND WITH GOOD REASON. NO OTHER MOVIE, IN MY OPINION, HAS THE WIT, WISDOM, MUSIC OR IMAGINATION OF THIS FILM. THE CHILD ACTORS ARE AMAZING, ESPECIALLY JULIE DAWN COLE, WHO PLAYS THE BRATTY VERUCA SALT. GENE WILDER IS ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT AS THE SARCASTIC WILLY WONKA, HIS LINES ALONE ARE REASON TO WATCH THE MOVIE...I CAN QUOTE THIS MOVIE FROM BEGINNING TO END AND NEVER TIRE OF IT!

Summary: Enjoyable, but inconsistent message
Review: I recently rented this and watched it with my nearly-5 year old daughter. She enjoyed it, but I was surprised to find that I did not like it nearly as well as I did as a child.

The set design is adequate for the time...and Wilder and the other actors do an adequate acting job. However, I cannot explain to my daughter the reason that Charlie was given the factory. He, too, misbehaved--led by Grandpa Joe, who suggested that they stay behind and drink the magic bubbles which caused them to fly. Why, at that point, was Charlie allowed to continue the quest? By rights, he too should have been whisked away!

And what was that "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" boat sequence?

This has a dark enough side that I cannot endorse it fully for young children. The edge made it less enjoyable for this adult, too.

Summary: The best childhood movie ever!
Review: Anyone who puts down a childhood classic like this obviously doesn't have the child inside them. Gene Wilder does an excellent potrayal of the ecentric Candyman in his imaginative world of candy and characters. The story of Charlie Bucket,a poor boy who dares and hopes to dream of living a better life for him and his family. It never amazes me, that I cry every time I see Charlie get disappointed or let down. He is such a sweet and loving child, a child we all hope to have when we start a family. A boy who is unselfish and giving. I also adore Grandpa Joe. He reminds me of my grandpa. I also love the set designs for his factory. This film being made in 1971 did very well in the special effects category without having a computer to help out. I wish there was a candy factory today that would have a contest like that! In a world of pure imagination I guess anything is possible.....
