Summary: Great adaption!
Review: When I had seen this film, I had just finished the book the day before and had the scenes and quotes still fresh in my mind. When the theater lights dimmed and the previews were over, this gem of a film began. The Green Mile is the tale of John Coffey ("like the drink but not spelled the same"), a large black man convicted of raping and murdering two little girls. John Coffey is then sentenced at his trial and is found guilty, being forced to serve the death penalty at Cold Mountain Penetintary. John Coffey will soon have to walk the "Green Mile" and sit down in Old Sparky's lap, but not before meeting some interesting people and helping out his friends. This is a very strong and beautiful film that is very well acted, but after watching, you may become depressed. I, for one, didn't have a problem with the length because if it were any shorter, the film would have not been this good. It was almost word for word the same as the book and the scenes in the book were in the movie except for two (the begining and the end). I have to admit that I did like Shawshank better simply because it was more uplifting, but this film is still great. I highly recommend it!

Summary: Essentially a TV movie - a very good one
Review: One feels like a thug quibbling with such a well-intended, moral film, but when all is said is done, THE GREEN MILE is a TV movie ladled with lots of money. One can sniff a three year old (or Stephen King) phoning in the plot turns, the music is over the top, and the running time would tax Methusulah. Nevertheless, the performances are sterling (the sadistic guard is great), photography first-rate, and its heart is in the right place. But for my money the Christ story is just too ripe, the symbology overt, and the mouse thing was arch. However, as general entertainment, it's a good offering.

Summary: The Green Mile on DVD
Review: Frank Darabont's "The Green Mile" is great in every aspect. It is the tale of a southern death row prison guard who, on the job, encounters a large miraculous black man sentenced to death. The writing directing and performances are all great. The real standout of this film though, is the cast itself. I have never seen a film in my entire life with so many character actors whose performances are so dead on. Some people complain that the film is too long, at three hours, but no one complained that Darabont's last film, "The Shawshank Redemption", is long, (only twenty minutes shorter) with the same pacing as "The Green Mile". The short documentry "Walking the Mile" is the only major extra feature on this DVD. Though it is only ten minutes long, it still shares some interesting details on how the film was cast, written, and made.

Summary: Amazing, just simply amazing!!!
Review: I read the book first, it was just awesome. Then I saw the movie when it came out, just as awesome. King is the best, simply the best!! If you have not seen the movie then see it!! Or read the book to get the full picture, or just do both! I recomend this movie because it is just the best. so once again, if you have not seen it then rent it and see it or just buy it,you will not regret it, promise!

Summary: pretty long, but excellently done
Review: True! this movie is incredebly long, but you still must admit it is very good. great performances by: Hanks, Morse, Pepper, and of course Michael Clarke Duncan. Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan, Enemy of the State, and Battlefield Earth) is an amazing up and coming actor. Look for big things from him in the future. this is a very moving story of life. the book is very good too.

Summary: Caught Me By Surprise
Review: I was very surprised when I saw this movie, directed by John Darabont and starring Tom Hanks and the remarkable, larger than life, Michael Duncan. Because every single review had harped on how long it was, I expected to be bored. However, I didn't mind the length of this tale of life and mysterious happenings on a Death Row "long mile" in the 30's. I found it to be very engrossing, well written, and beautifully acted. Tom Hanks, for one, never seems to mistake overacting with intensity. His quiet, strong portayal of a man with character, working on Death Row, confronted by daily decisions and inexplicable occurrences is perfect. Consistently he proves how skilled he is at portraying a character as a real person, with a heart, guts, an actual life. He gives this movie, with its improbable plot, the strength to anchor the tale and save it from going adrift into a sea of confusion and mysticism. In this task he is assisted by the ensemble cast, all of them, the good guys AND the bad guys. All were uniformly excellent. And what a piece of work Michael Duncan is! He has the most expressive face I have seen on the screen in a long time. I am looking forward to seeing him in other movies. I will remember scenes from this movie for a long time, I expect. Don't pass this one by if you like touching stories, well depicted. And don't pass it by if you sometimes wonder about miracles. best, jean

Review: Okay, I loved The Shawshank Redemption and so I tried out the DVD with high hopes, my goodness thankfully I only rented this mess of a movie instead of shelling out the money for it. The plot, for its worth, is all about this miracle worker who is innocently placed on death row in a depression era prison. The best actor, and the only interesting character in this movie, is the mouse...

Summary: Well crafted character study
Review: Stephen King knows how to spin a yarn. This is another terrific adaptation of a King novel that delivers a bittersweet story of a depression era Louisiana prison on the death row cell block. It presents numerous interesting character studies that induce strong emotions for the various characters. There is also a lot of irony here with good guys who are evil and bad guys who are good. Director Frank Darabont, who missed out on an Oscar with 'Shawshank Redemption' (also by Stephen King) to 'Forrest Gump' must have decided he wasn't going to beaten by Tom Hanks again and secured him for this film with wonderful results. Unfortunately, he was trumped at the Academy by Kevin Spacey and 'American Beauty', an injustice in my opinion. Darabont again does a superlative job of creating the right mix of drama, imagery and human interest. My only criticism of his direction is that the film was much too long. It certainly could have been done in two hours instead of three with very little lost in the editing. We could have eliminated the entire first execution and rehearsal without any loss to the story except perhaps the sponge issue. The acting was outstanding by all. Tom Hanks turns in another great performance as the tough but kind cell block boss. Hanks continues to show his versatility, excelling in both dramatic and comedic roles and moving effortlessly between them like a chameleon. David Morse mirrored Hanks as another tough guy with a heart and played the part nicely. Michael Clarke Duncan engendered a very sensitive and lovable nature to his character, making the contrast between his demeanor and physiognomy all the more striking. And I cannot leave out the uncredited star of the show, the little mouse who played Jangles. Overall, a well crafted film and an excellent story that suffered slightly from excessive length. I rated it a 9/10. I would recommend it highly to anyone except those who are squeamish about graphic violence (such as the electrocution scenes).

Summary: A magnificent masterpiece
Review: The Green Mile by director Frank Darabont is one of the most adorable movies in history. Tom Hanks stars in this epic drama about a prisoner, played by Michael Clarke Duncan, who is judged to death. This prisoner has obviously supernatural gifts, and everything focuses around this strange man and what he does. Great movie, got to see this one.

Summary: Magnificent !
Review: Brilliantly directed and the acting is SUPERB ! A movie that will test your emotions and stay with you for a long time... A must see drama, that seemed to glide faster than it's 3 hours in length. When I heard some movie fans and critics say this was better than The Shawshank Redemption, I thought maybe they were caught up in the moment, and possibly exaggerating a bit. Now that I have finally seen this movie, I can honestly say --- it WAS better than "Shawshank". Shawshank Redemption is also an excellent film, but The Green Mile is one of the best I have ever seen. Then again, Frank Darabont directed both films, so it may not be necessary to compare the two.
