Rating: Summary: RIVETTING AND UNIQUE; A "MUST SEE!" Review: Steven King is a master of combining the supernatural with the human element. In The Green Mile (as in The Stand) you end up with a cast of very unique, individual and interesting personalities along with quite a few jump-out-of-your-seat surprises (reminiscent of the "X" Files) thrown in! The movie takes place in a depression era prison; death-row, to be exact. (And a word of warning: The scenes with Old Sparkey are grippingly real)! Into this grim scene walks John Coffey; a giant of a man accused of a double murder. As the story slowly unfolds, we learn that John Coffey has a secret; he possesses some amazing special powers! The casting in this movie is excellent; Tom Hanks shines, as usual, in his starring role as the warden of his cell block, as does Michael Clarke Duncan in the role of John Coffey. I also think David Morse (formerly of St. Elsewhere) did an EXCELLENT job, as one of the officers on the cell block. This is definitely a movie you must see; especially if you are a King fan! You will not be disappointed! Be patient at first, though; the story takes a while to "heat up." But once it does, forget it! You won't be able to move out of your seat!
Rating: Summary: One of the Years Best! Fine chracter study! Good DVD! Review: The GREEN MILE is one of 1999's best films with fine performances from all the leads. Often moving, you may not walk away from this movie without a tear in your eye. The 3 hour running time may discourage some viewers, but although lesureley paced, The GREEN MILE is never dull and always involving. The DVD keeps the mostly dark colors sharp and clear at all times. However I found the DVD to be a bit disappointing since I expected more "extras" than was available (a trailer and a brief 11 minute featurette was all). I would have hoped for more cast interviews or perhaps a commentary track or an isolated music score track. Perhaps this title will be re-released at a later date with more extras. Despite the absence of extras, this DVD certainly deserves a permenant place in your home library.
Rating: Summary: A touching movie even for Stephen King Review: Stephen King has blown the viewers away with the magic of John Coffey and the little mouse of the E block otherwise known as the green mile. The Green Mile has the viewers thirsty for more of Stephen King and his brillance as an author.
Rating: Summary: High quality - just misses the mark Review: The Green Mile is certainly one of the better films of 1999. Adapted from one of Stephen King's best stories, the film is doggedly faithful to the original story. One of the common complaints against it is its length. I agree that it does feel too long - I have nothing against three hour films; great films are never long enough. Green Mile isn't a great film. As for the inevitable comparison to Darabont's other prison film, Shawshank Redemption - that is a masterpiece of film that soars with powerful imagination and contains unforgettable cinematic images. Green Mile never quite finds those wings. The story does get a little heavy handed with the symbolism - if you don't catch onto the Christ allegory at first, don't worry, they've named him John Coffey for you. The plot twists are pretty tough to miss given the limited amount of characters and the ample foreshadowing of events. The film also makes a couple of key missteps. The CGI effects used when JC does his "miracles" diminishes the power of the moment. It actualizes an event that is more powerful in the mind - Darabont should've trusted his actors to make those events live for him. The cast is fine and the production truly captures the environment as well as the time the story takes place. It's a fine story and a movie worth watching. But it doesn't quite hit the high notes.
Rating: Summary: This movie was truly touching Review: I just saw this movie and I thought it was absolutely amazing. It was good because it had drama, suspense, action, a good storyline, everything needed in a good movie. It's very sad, though, and there are some sick parts. It's the kind of movie that makes you cry and stay up until 1:00 in the morning thinking about. I'd say that even if you don't like Tom Hanks, you should still see this touching movie.
Rating: Summary: Stunning! Review: Tom Hanks delivers another top notch performance as a prison guard on death row. Stephen King has written what will become an American classic about a black mansentenced to death and wrongly accused of mudering two little girls. Don't be concerned with trying to hold back the tears, I've seen this movie make hardened, grown men cry. King is no longer just a master of horror fiction, he has proven he can write a deeply moving story about life, love and friendship. By far his best work to date.
Rating: Summary: This movie is very entertaning. Review: I liked this movie a lot to me it very optomistic and I knew it was going to be because it is by Stevin King but it was not scary like most of his movies are. And I think this movie was better then most of his other movies. I think he should make more of these type of movies then scary movies.
Rating: Summary: What a movie! Review: I read the book. I rented the DVD...then I immediately ordered it from Amazon for my personal collection. Not since Southpark have I wanted to watch a movie over and over again. Every performance is riveting. One of the best movies I have ever seen!
Rating: Summary: Very unexpected plot twists Review: I had heard that this was a great movie, everyone who wrote reviews on here had good things to say about it, so I decided that I would order it. I watched it the other day and five minutes into the movie I though I had the whole plot figured out... not so! it kept my attention for the full 3 hours, i did not expect the outcome to be at all like it was. The only thing i didnt like was the ending... I thought this was a serious movie, but the lines at the end were sooo corny.. I couldnt help but laugh at it. I'm not sure if thats what the writer was going for... but oh well, I still thought it was good
Rating: Summary: Perfectly Wonderful Adaptation Review: Thank you, Frank Darabont, for sticking so closely to the book. I'd read the book months ago and it was excellent. Whoever presided over the casting of this film deserves an Oscar. The actors are exactly as I envisioned them as I was reading the book. Tom Hanks and Michael (I'm sorry, I can't think of your last name but you were MAGNIFICENT!) were luminous in my opinion. No one could doubt the suffering of John Coffey. Nor the compassion of Paul Edgecombe. This film will be as much a classic as Citizen Cane or any other film we deem worthy of the honor today. My great-grandchildren will be talking about this one in the year 2100.
