Summary: Fascinating Entertainment
Review: I resisted this movie when it first came out because Hulce portrays Mozart a bit like a punk rocker. However, when I finally did see it, I was quickly won over by the refreshing portrayal of Mozart and Abraham's unforgettable characterization of Salieri. Salieri, the older rival composer, realizes he cannot match the pure genius of the young and impudent Wolfgang Amadeus. His discovery and realization of Mozart's genius is so vivid and convincing, that anyone watching comes away with a new or renewed appreciation for this great music. The human side of these people makes this story special also. Jealousy consumes Salieri on the one hand while it is Mozart whose health deteriorates as he pays the price for his exuberant and questionable lifestyle. The aging Salieri unmercifully lives to witness his music fading into obscurity and declares himself "the patron saint of mediocrity's everywhere". Mozart's immortal achievements are destined to live on and we come to share Salieri's wonder and respect for this music. Although historically inaccurate on many counts, the spirit of the music and its impact on the times is true to the heart. Worthy of the praise this movie has received, I highly recommend it.

Summary: Well-rounded offering
Review: This was a rather good movie, expressing all the emotional depth and plot intricacy necessary to tell its ambitious story. Acting was superb, especially on the part of Abraham (Hulce was a wee bit grating). Joseph II was a great character, and certainly well portrayed. The soundtrack, is, of course, Mozart. Who could beat it?

Aside from some historical discrepancies (that is, everything involving Mozart :) the movie moves along quite smoothly, costumes and times and locations fit together quite nicely. The DVD does a good job of representing the film as originally viewed at the theatre.

All in all a good package.

Summary: Amazing Film!
Review: I saw this movie basicly by accident. I rented it thinking it couldn't be too bad since it won all those oscars. I didn't even like classical music at the time. Well, I was astounded and moved by it like no other film I had ever seen. The acting was exellent, the story enthralling, and the music! It was like listening to the voice of God. A kings composer forgoten overnight and a forgoten nobody becomes one of history's most renouned composers, if not the greatest in history. F. Murray Abraham and Tom Hulce are brilliant, as is Jeffrey Jones as the bumbling Emperor of Austria who "had no ear at all." I imediatly purchased the soundtrack and other comositions by Mozart, amazing for a guy who thought he hated classical music. Buy it and see and hear, you won't be disapointed.

Summary: Torture me in China instead.
Review: We were born mediocre, and here comes Salieri to try and make it beautiful. How preposterous!

No, Salieri, Saint of the Mediocre, the man who not only tries to be great and fails miserably -- but must also continuously be in the company of Mozart's greatness. I cannot think of a more cruel act one human can enforce upon another than for an established retailer to offer this movie to your naive and happily eager eyes. Okay, maybe one.

But this is not entertainment. How entertaining can it be (and please feel free to tell me if I'm missing something here!) to watch the tragic state of humanity -- self awareness of our own failure and weakness and lack of true self-expression. No, even worse than that -- but give a select few freedom from these curses and then give them all the spotlight so we my gnash our teeth and cry in our sleep!

I would rather be locked in a room with no food, tapped incessantly on the forehead with a drop of water, crushed between the cushins of a coffin six feet underground while I ran out of breath, than forced to watch this movie that traps me in my own feeling of self-unworth.

Please, do not buy this movie, movie-goer, unless you have nothing left to lose. Or if you happen to be a genius. Or if you happen to like Mozart.

Summary: Wolfie!
Review: This is an excellent excellent movie. It deserved its Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor nod in 1984. F. Murray Abraham shows what it's like to be a forgotten artist hidden underneath the artistry of great composers such as Mozart. The DVD might at first be confusing if you put it in upside down--the disk itself doesn't indicate that it's 2 sided (and there's no CD label art to indicate which side is the A side), and if you put it in on the wrong side, it'll take you to a normal menu but you'll begin halfway through the movie.

Summary: Simply Brilliant like Mozart himself!
Review: I am a high school freshmen and we saw this film in class as apart of our history lessons. I just gotta say that this film was simply brilliant just like Mozart himself! This film gave me an insight on Mozart himself. It was sad though, at the end when Mozart died. As for that guy who's against Mozart, well, I felt mad and yet sympathized him. This film is really, really good! A good look back at history.

Summary: The more I see, the more I like it
Review: I did not expect this movie to be this good at first. It is the best American movies I have seen and it gets better every time I see it. It make me get interested in classical songs too, isn't it strange?. I love customes designs and powerful sound effect. This movies is truly made for DVD quality, just like sitting in the opera house. Everyone in the movies are great, not only the leading rolls, but also all the opera crews, they deserve the Oscars, and I wonder why Tom Hulce did not his the Oscar.

However, I wish they make the interactive features more attractive and also the DVD was recorded on two sides, make me have to change the side in the middle of the movie and quite hard to handle the disc (you don't want your greasy fingers on the disc).

Summary: One of the greatest films ever made
Review: Even years after seeing this movie, It is still magical. My DVD on my desktop computer is a piece of junk (thanks Compaq) but this movie is wonderful to watch over and over. For anyone who ever thought classical music was for stuffies, this movie will open the door to a wider appreciation of the music.
