Summary: a beautiful meditation on the inevitable ugliness of poverty
Review: I first saw Gummo on the big screen and subsequent video viewings do not leave me more clear about the movie's meaning or message. I think (thank God) it's not meant to have much of a "message" in the first place. Harmony is an incredible fly on the wall in some pretty desolate, chaotic places, sending you images that mystify, horrify, amuse and move. He feels little need to explain himself which is why I think this movie got such mixed reviews. You're left to decipher and absorb Gummo's haunting images without a Hollywood instruction book. The movie weaves it's way into your subconscious, resurfacing days, months, years afterward.

Summary: a trivial revelation...
Review: i heard this film only cost 10,000 dollars to create, money decently spent. its random plot throws emotion in your face and you don't know if your supposed to laugh or cry. i say brilliant. although it makes you want to be in the shower for the rest of your life its worth watching until you can understand every word of diologue. an artistic masterpiece....I think i'm in love with bunnyboy.

Summary: It's Like Looking Into A Mirror Of My Town
Review: After hearing mixed reviews of Gummo from friends, which were always on the extremes, I decided to rent it for myself. I was intrigued from the very beginning. It's almost like a documentary, but better. Everyone should at least give this a try.

Summary: Small towns everywhere........
Review: As some might know, this movie was shot in Nashville. And you all thought it was just Grand Ole Opry country. Ha.

It is believed that we sleep with our relatives and don't wear shoes. Well,......

I thought it was pretty close to what awaits you in some small towns in the south. Perhaps..everywhere in America..but how sad that would be. Most towns wouldn't want to own up to it, but it's there. The scrubby little kids and the uneducated parents. The mentally challenged whore and the disgusting man selling her. And yes, even the Chinese place serving cat. Don't believe it? That's alright. I know it's here.

My boyfriend actually worked on the film. I was told that in some scenes the camera men had to wear protective suits because of the insect infested homes. People actually lived there too. The houses weren't made to look that way, that's how they were found..inhabitants and all. Yucko, huh? I liked it, but I don't think I would have rented it if I hadn't heard all the crazy stories from my boyfriend. After, I was left feeling a little sad. I am sure if I searched long enough I could find a plot and some intellectual thought to propell you to the purchasing counter. However, I could only think how sad it is that somewhere in my town someone is taking a bath and eating spaghetti. He he. Watch it......NOW!!!!!!

Summary: Leonard Maltin Wears Leather Pajamas
Review: When I met Leonard maltin at the mall he was talking about how bad Gummo was. He said it made him cry and if John Tesh would ask him to review it for Entertainment tonight he was going to say it was awful. Well I watched Entertainment Tonight and all he reviewed was Disney cartoons. I noticed a stain on his pants at the mall. He was outside the Hot Sam buying a pretzel with his son who looks like a monkey. He even wore a tie with Mickey Mouse on it. I saw Gummo anyway and thought it was going to be animated. Linda manz was in Days of heaven and had one line in The Game with Michael Douglass. Go Cats. Go Ohio University! Rose Bowl '99!

Summary: A horrid look into the lives of a small rural town.
Review: "Gummo" is a movie which peers into the lives of several individuals growing up in a town recently ravaged by a tornado. Living conditions are so poor that it makes the viewer think twice about their own status. Though some scenes are humorous, many are shocking and can leave the viewer in a discontent state. Although the movie lacks a solid story line, it is still worth a screening.

Summary: About as good as I expected
Review: EXCELLENT MOVIE! After seeing the trailer at least a thousand times, I was finally able to check this video out. God there are terrific images and sequences in this movie. Alas, some of this was destined not to work. Less consistant than the similarly themed "Kids". The most intriguing character is perhaps the autistic teenager "Bunny Boy", the narrator of this film. Of course he never speaks, or interacts with the other characters, (until the very end). Perhaps he is a Christ figure. We first see him urinating on passing cars, and later he is "shot" by some little kids who are not above using the words "****" and "*****". The characters and the town is constantly at war with God (Bunny Boy). Fascinating film, buy it!

Summary: Gummo Rules! Direct your attention below
Review: When I went to see this movie as a midnight special, I was expecting a gross explict film about dogs being impailed on posts, and misfit kids having plesurable sex with partners of extremly young age. What I got was a movie that brought out the horrors of life in a junky small town. A movie with characters so rich in feeling that it could've been a documentary. This movie was a movie that couldn't have been made better. IT made Harmony Korine's other movie "Kids" look like utter trash. It's a movie that should be seen by everyone. A great landmark in 90's films. So Janet Maslin, and leonard Maltin you both can rot for all I care. A master piece.
