Rating: Summary: Sondheim Magic! Review: The original Broadway production of Sondheim's meditation on maturation seen via classic fairy tales (Act I) and their maturing sequels (Act II) has been saved for the ages. It is great, challenging, wise, merry and not for kiddies. Not to be missed. Insufficient extras but still to be treasured
Rating: Summary: Marvelous show Review: I had the pleasure of seeing ITW on B'way 8 times during its first run, and the original cast reunion concert in 1998, and the revival in 2002 (I've also had the opportunity to play The Baker in community theatre). The original cast, especially the chemistry between Joanna Gleason and Chip Zien was outstanding, and is outstanding as it's preserved on video. This is a marvelous show with so many truths which adults and children can enjoy for years. Children may have some questions, but this show is a wonderful way of introducing children to some of the difficult topics which arise during life.
Rating: Summary: Never seen a play or musical Review: I saw this the first time on PBS & loved it! I was amazed how much dark, sarcastic today's humor it had on it. Bernette Peters was awesome in it, her line timing was perfect, so was Joanna Gleason especially that she didn't want to dive to the ground everytime royalty approached. A very clumsy Cinderella, and very graphic showing of how her evil sisters managed to get their too big feet into her small glass slipper. Even the prince gagged. My favorite lines were when Snow White was told by the birds that her Price Charming cheated on her (*Sniff* I don't CARE!") & confronted him, he replied, "I said I was charming, I never said I was sincere." When two princes sing about finding wives, they hit a such a high note, they both grab their groins. Even the wolf is totally gender specific in full view. The characters even dragged the narator into the story against his will... I don't want to give it all away, but I know even teenagers wouldn't find it boring or "stupid".
Rating: Summary: A Great DVD of an Even Greater Musical Review: The cast is great, the script is swell, and the filming is as good as could be hoped...nothing could be as good as seeing it live but this dvd comes close! The music will keep you singing for several hours afterward...and it's a MUST for any fan of Bernadette Peters
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: Great for kids or adults. All the workings of a great show. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: I saw this on PBS a few years ago and THOROUGHLY enjoyed it. This time around, I bought it for my daughter but watched it four times before I gave it to her! Everything about it, the music, the sets, the performances, was wonderful. It's the kind of musical that's not just about people bursting into song every five minutes -- it has a real story to it and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Bravo!
Rating: Summary: "You talk to birds?" Review: Fractured fairy tales at it's best! With Bernedet Petters as Rupenzel's witch. It can't get any better then this. The rest of the cast is just as fabules and it's more funny then you can stand. Cinderella wants to go to the ball but she doesn't really want a prince. Red Riding Hood strays from the path. Jack takes more then he should have. The baker and his wife want a baby and go through a heck of a lot of stuff to get their wish.
Rating: Summary: Who doesnt love this musical... Review: This staging of Into the Woods is the production at its best. Having seeing many reparatory performances of it and having seen the recent revival on Broadway, i can say that nothing compare to the beauty and majesty of this cast, this evening, and this recording. The quality could be better... but I think you'll find you'll be so drawn in by the story that you won't care. A must have for every musical theatre aficionado.
Rating: Summary: "Into the Woods"= Perfection Review: I've seen a few musicals. I've even acted in a couple. But none is as wonderfully acted or written like "Into the Woods." When I first saw this show, I was happy, sad, and hopeful all at once. This is one of the best musicals I've ever seen. The cast and crew look like they've worked very had to make the show a success. The voices were phenomenal as was the script. I truly loved this piece. Though it was long, I think it was worth the wait to finally see what develops.
Rating: Summary: the best of all time Review: I am a lover of musicals but this one just blew me away. It takes the classic tales we all knew as children and throws them in a blender to see what results. What comes out is a hystarical meeting of our favorite stories with witty dialogue and outstanding music. I have performed this in school as the Witch and out of all the roles I have done that is my favorite. I recommend this to people who even hate musicals. I have introduced the musically challenged to this and they have been hooked ever since.
