Summary: Great movie, full of compassion for the "freaks"
Review: I thought Tod Browning's movie was tremendous. It was very short in length but told a great story. The banding together of the "freaks" to defeat the cruel acrobat was wonderful, as was Mr.Browning's willingness to show the human side of these circus performers. We especially liked Hans. Definitely a movie worth seeing.

Summary: The real freaks were shown. Fab!
Review: A tale of how freaks feel. It shows how mean people were to them. A terrible woman pretends she likes a midget. And the midgets wife hates it! The woman is a beautiful trapeze star that already is in love with a jerk that got ditched by a woman who thinks Freaks are nice. She meets a nice clown that also thinks Freaks are also nice.

Summary: Compelling look at the persons with disabilities at a circus
Review: This movie examines the life of persons on display at a circus due to their disabilities, how they cope, live, love, and hurt as human beings. It is a sad story of betrayal and the revenge exacted by circus persons when "normal people" attempt to murder two of the circus people.

Summary: Fascinating documenturary of the truely hideous.
Review: "Freaks" was an amazing film about two truely hideous individuals amoung a host of circus performers. It has been said that it exploited individuals aflicted with physical abnormalities but the true meaning of the film was not to "display" how unfortunate these individual's lives were but what wonderful people they were. Indeed, the true "freaks" of this film were the two "normal" performers, so wrapped up in their own greed and self fufillment that they foolishly tried to come between the bond between a family of what I would proudly call "true humans", practitioners of humanity.

Summary: Excellent, it shows another side of life we don"t often see.
Review: I was very drawn to this movie. A previous reviewer forgot to mention Frances, the girl with no arms. My definite favorite. This culture should have been preserved, instead of ridiculed. I was impressed by their commitment to each other. A must see.

Summary: The ONLY Film to show real "physically different" people!
Review: The story is simple as was noted by another viewer, but this movie doesn't need anything more. It is the chance to see some of history's famous sideshow "freaks", though I would just call them physically different. Featured are the beautiful sisters who are joined at the hip ("siamese twins"); the amazing and arresting Johnny Eck--who has no legs but who gracefully runs around on his hands and is outgoing and quite handsome; the trio of "pinheads," who were displayed as "sisters" although they were boys in dresses--they were mentally disabled and not actually related; the "human torso" who had no arms or legs but was quite happy enough and could move around by inching himself along on a surface; a bearded lady, a giant, a super skinny guy, a fat lady, and "miniature" folks as well. (I may have missed a couple!) Such a group of people could never be seen today and it wasn't long after this movie was made that sideshows (specifically: showing off physically different people for a profit) were made illegal. The sad thing is these people were able to make a decent living from sideshows and the people in it were all a tight-knit family--taking away the sideshow meant the loss of any ability to make money for the majority of these folks, and it desolved the sideshow families. Most people don't realize that the majority of the stars of side shows worked there by their own CHOICE!

"Freaks" is a very special film and shows many very special people. I only hope that viewers will appreciate how unique and individually wonderful each of these people were. I don't think we will ever see such a group of people like this in one setting ever again. The director didn't make fun of any of the people and showed them for what they were: folks just like you and me, except for being physically different. (Excluding the very happy, but truthfully mentally disabled "pinheads.")

It's a great movie! END

Summary: One of worst films ever
Review: Watching "Freaks" is like witnessing a terrible accident. It's disgusting but one can't quite will oneself to stop looking. The writing is the worst--second place ain't close. Unfortunate people with unfortunate afflictions are exploited for the idle amusement of "normal" folk. The plot is ridiculous and obvious. In short, it just doesn't get any worse than this. Perhaps, then, that's what makes new fans for this movie when much better movies of the period are in oblivion. As Mencken said, "No one ever went broke under-estimating the taste of the American people." END

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Freaks is a movie ahead of its time
Review: Freaks, the classic film by Tod Browning, presents a strange yet touching look at the lives of circus freaks and features a cast of real freaks. The simple plot, about a wealthy midget used by a full-size woman after his money, may seem corny at first but presents a tellling message about greed and the criteria that society uses to determine who is considered "normal." END
