Rating: Summary: A PERFECT ROMANTIC PAIRING Review: One of my all time favorites;i actually saw it for the first time as a kid and i remembered that i could not wait for MONTY to let SHELLEY WINTERS drawn in her canoe. For me ELISABETH and MONTY were a perfect romantic match.Their scenes together are beautiful to watch. It was also one of the first film i saw that made me realize the importance of movie editing.ELISABETH and MONTY made two other films together:RAINTREE COUNTY and SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER ,but none of these can equal A PLACE IN THE SUN.I know many people thinks this melodrama is a bit too much to swallow ,but ignore them ,because here is a true AMERICAN classic.
Rating: Summary: A bit much Review: Montgomery Clift gives a very good performance as do Taylor and Winters but nothing can change the fact that this film drags just the tiniest bit. Raymond Burr shows up in a role that he works wonders with. The tension in some scenes is palpable as the orchestra brings in a soft low murmer of music. The best scene of the whole movie is when Clift stands listening to the radio and the announcer comes on to plant the idea in his head. Not to give anything away, but the closing scenes are also powerfully moving. Not the best movie I've every seen, but worth a watch.
Rating: Summary: THIS MOVIE IS ABSOLUTELY SOLAR POWERED! ..... Review: the old cliche is that "THEY DON'T MAKE 'EM LIKE THEY USED TOO" that statement is not true of filmakers making films but is very true for GOD(or if your an atheist mom's and dads)that make moviestars. this film would be nothing on paper or would be nothing if it starred julia roberts and ben affleck instead of ELIZABETH TAYLOR and MONTGOMERY CLIFT.whoever won the irving thalberg award the year before that guy who RATTED all his friends out said as much. something to the effect that he wasn't a genius but GENE KELLY sure made him seem like one. the writing and plot aren't completely irrelevent yet and thanks to the perfomances of the films luminous stars it never will be.on a personal note if i were MONTGOMERY CLIFTS character george i'd have picked SHELLEY WINTERS.
Rating: Summary: ELIZABETH`S FIRST TURN IN A CLASSIC FILM - AS AN ADULT Review: With THE LAST TIME I SAW PARIS, my favorite with Elizabeth Taylor. She was not a method actress, indeed starred on the stage in the late 60s with Burton and her major debut was in -81 as Regina in THE LITTLE FOXES. So in 1951 she was j u s t a moviestar. But what a capability. Her naturaleness stunnes me. Even Clift and especially Winters seems 2 overplay in this film so clearly designed by George Stevens to become a masterpiece that it hadly could fail. Yet, its tone is more in line with the 30s and the Depression, than the 50s. Director Stevens won an Oscar.
Rating: Summary: Billiard room scene a classic.... Review: I remember seeing this movie, first run, as a junior in high school. A lot of these classic, 50s movies are impossible to understand by today's kids. That billiard room scene between Taylor and Clift holds more meaning to me today than all the crass junk we see now between Tom Cruise and whomever. Subtle is not a word anyone comprehends now and most likely is the reason sex has become one big bore for a lot of young people. No sense in going on and on....attempts at explaining what movies really meant to teenagers then end up sounding like lectures. If you haven't seen this movie (or plan to see it again), watch Shelley Winters' shoes at the beginning in the movie theatre where she meets Clift...and then walking home later. One time it's saddle shoes....then loafers. The continuity people really missed the boat on that one...still giving it 5 stars for content, acting, story, and just plain fabulous movie viewing. Take along Kleenex....
Rating: Summary: American Misery Review: The movie A place In the Sun is a great example of a old movie thats based on old themes. The movie in black in white is not appealing, and I lossed interest because of it. Elizabeth Taylor plays a rich girl, while Montgomery Clifts plays the role as the poor lad who is drawn towards Taylor. The plot is simple, based on Clifts desire for Taylor and his desire to kill his current love for this passion. If this plot turns you on and you have a desire for black and white I suggest this movie, but if your from the new school as I am this movie is a bore.
Rating: Summary: Not recommended for people with slight intelligence. Review: A Place in the Sun exemplifies the complications of a collision between social classes and love. Written on a Romeo and Juliet foundation, the movie illustrated the harsh realities of capitalist American prejudices. Highly recommended for the intelligent romantic and the Elizabeth Taylor obsessed.
Rating: Summary: A Place in the Sun Review: I thought all the actors gave excellent performances. One could certainly see why George Eastman was attracted to Elizabeth Taylor's character, with her beauty and charm. On the other hand, maybe Shelley Winter's character might have been the right woman for George. In either case, it was George's deception and indecision that led to his ultimate demise and prevented him from obtaining his "place in the sun." I thought the highlight of the movie was the dramatic scene in the courtroom. It summarized the issue at hand and demonstrated to the viewers that George was in fact "guilty" of something.
Rating: Summary: English 104 Review Review: I believe this movie is outdated for our time, but on the hand it portrays what most of our society is like. Doing the crime before thinking of the punishment. In this movie Montgomery Clifts role as a poor gentleman, who is caught between the poor but lovely finacee, Shelley Winters and the beautiful and rich Elizabeth Taylor. He has to make a decision which is to kill his finacee and be with Elizabeth or stay with the finacee. He then takes it upon his self to kill is finacee to try and be with Elizabeth, but the plan back fires and he gets caught and then gets charged with first degree murder, then subject to the electric chair. This movie is very entriguing and also entertaining. I give it three stars because for its time it had to be some what like a thriller, but compared to today it is old news.
Rating: Summary: A Place In The Sun Review: I believe that this movie was very interesting. The conflict between the lovers was intense. The storyline is basically about a man who is engaged, yet he falls in love with another woman. Ultimately, the new girl it beautiful and rich so the man contemplates murdering his fiance in order to be with the new woman. It is made in the 1950's and is somewhat depressing, but it is worth viewing.
