Summary: One of the best of all time
Review: I saw this movie for the first time at the age of 9. It was July 4 weekend and instead of a classic war movie my dad pulled out Yankee Doddle Dandy. I was shocked by his actions and was kind of mad. I sat down reluctantly to watch the movie and was hooked. I was so excited to see it out on DVD.

The movie tells the story of George Cohan. It does it in a flashback of his life. It starts on the day of his birth and tells his life story.

James Cagney plays George Cohan, and gives one of the greatest performances in the history of cinema. He won the Oscar that year for best actor. He sings and dances to classic tunes such as "Give my Regards to Broadway," "Yankee Doodle Dandy," and "Your a Grand Old Flag."

The movie is what patriotism is all about. In a post 9/11 era this is a movie that everyone should see. This is the tale of a man who loved his country and loved the opportunity America brought. Add this to your movie collection, I know you will enjoy it.

Summary: Where has our patriotism gone?
Review: I saw this movie for the first time last night w/ my father. He wanted me to see this movie to see the contrast of what people were like in the 40's-50's and how society is today. I'm 23 years old and to be honest with you, I thought that I wouldn't like this movie. As it turns out, I greatly enjoyed it. It was a wonderful story, full of patriotism - it just makes you proud to be in this country. What movies are out that are like this today? None. And that makes me incredibly sad to see such anti-Americanism. For what? If you want to see a movie that puts a fire in your belly and gets your spirit going, go see this movie - you will not be disappointed!

Summary: My father thanks you . . . and I thank you
Review: I was totally biased to love this film, because it was my late father's unabashed favorite. He adored Cagney, and this is truly Cagney at his best. But bias aside, this is a wonderful, wonderful movie. Yes, it's dated, and the flag-waving may seem over the top, but still it's one of the most enjoyable ways I can think of to kill two hours.

I can't help but think that Cagney's talents were largely wasted in his myriad gangster roles, because his athletic, acrobatic dancing in this film is beyond impressive -- I found myself thinking, "Were either Astair or Kelly this good?" And the sequence where he meets Mary, his future bride, is laugh-out-loud hilarious.

This is a must-own DVD. I've talked about the quality of film itself, but, happily, the transfer is also of exceedingly high quality. And all the extras are fun and interesting. First rate!

Summary: A real symbol
Review: I watched ths movie today July 4th and it was amazing the talent he had as an actor and dancer and writer of songs. We all tend to forget that these songs we all know were not easy to get producers to notice and take on his ideas . Due to his chrisma and persitience he made things happen . I feel sad that we do not seem to have talent as rare and refreshing as he was . He made me glad to be in america !

Summary: James Cagney at his absolute BEST! This is a true classic!
Review: If you're one of those people who have always thought of James Cagney as "just a gangster," then you haven't seen this movie. It would give you a whole different picture of one of the greatest actors in the history of cinema (if not THE greatest), and you'd see why this nice guy was so magnetic, and still is today! You would gain an appreciation for his thoroughly engaging and likable personality and sense of humor that you never had before (not to mention his VERY impressive dancing ability...a talent that Warner Bros. literally wasted in the 1930s)! Cagney always wanted to be viewed as a song and dance man, and his portrayal of the legendary George M. Cohan simply could not have been more brilliant...this was the pinnacle of his entire career. James Cagney was MADE for the role, and he sure deserved the Best Actor Oscar he won for his performance, which only goes to show that everyone else agreed he was best as this kind of character, too. His incredible energy is captivating, his sincere patriotism is inspiring, his one-liners are hilariously perfect. And the scene where his father is dying.....Wow! It's so genuine it will move you to tears. The whole movie is extremely well done, flowing smoothly from one scene to the next. The musical numbers are all outstanding--really a lot of fun. You'll be whistling and singing the catchy Cohan tunes for days after. I also especially like the fact that James Cagney's real-life sister, Jeanne, played his sister in the movie. This film definitely rejuvenates pride in the strong principles America and its flag once stood for, and reveals just how remarkably wonderful an actor James Cagney really was. He dances right off the screen and into your heart. You just can't help but like him! Oh, if only he had been given the opportunity to be in MORE uplifting movies like this one--with the kind of good part he always wanted...! No Fourth of July is complete without "Yankee Doodle Dandy" because it is the finest patriotic film ever made, and a first-class tribute to an American legend. But it's too good to watch only once a year! If you've never seen it...GET IT! You'll love every minute from start to finish! Without question, this is an all-time favorite...it just doesn't get any better than this--and neither does Cagney!

Summary: A Gem!
Review: Is there any doubt that Michael Curtiz was one of the most versatile directors ever!. What point would it make to list any of his films he did them all with a style.

Its Cagney,s Show of course , but the staging of the songs..flag waving..great supporting cast and general wrap up leaves no viewer wanting.

Rosemary DeCamp and Walter Huston plays Cagney,s parents. a Chance to see actors like Richard Whorf and some of the rest of the Warner comapny...S.Z. Sakall, George Tobias they are all here.Cagney to Elvis ..Curtiz did it. James Cagney..a legend and an institution !
