Summary: Watch it for Billy Zane, but read the book
Review: Leonor (sp?) Varela's acting was pretty excruciating at the beginning but I got used to it (or she got better) as the film went on. she certainly did look the part of an Egyptian queen, I will give her that. I am not a big fan of Dalton's - I think Caeser could have been cast better but Billly Zane as Marc Antony ... ooh la la!The sets and costuming are also breathtaking.

Margerat George's books are fabulous - read the book for the better story and if there are any directors out there, don't make the books for TV anymore - make them a real movie and spend the money to get talent.

Summary: THE SETS WERE GREAT AND THE ACTORS WERE BEAUTIFUL BUT.....
Review: If I didn't read the book it was based on "The Memoirs of Cleopatra" by Margaret George, maybe I wouldn't have such a low opinion of this movie, but I did read the book(which was a BRILLANT and EXCELLENT read) and I do have a low opinion. Cleopatra and Antony had 3 children. Twins(boy and girl) and another boy. Antony did kill himself and Cleopatra would never have considered killing Antony herself. Yes, Leonor Varela is a beautiful actress and Cleopatra wasn't a great beauty, but she was in the book, mildly attractive, I'm glad she wasn't a great beauty, because it's great to see someone who has the power of charisma, passion, smarts, intelligence and self-confidence to have two powerful men fall insanely(insanely--in a good way) and madly in love with her. It goes to show you that a woman's looks aren't everything. It's what's in the head that counts also. Being a female myself, that gives me some hope of finding a Caesar or Antony for myself. I'm not really broken up about the acting. It was what it was. But if you're going to do a movie based on a book at least keep with the facts of the book. Yes, we all know its Hollywood and they change things, but this is an historical picture, not a remake of some silly B movie. Stick with the book. Also, Caesar did know she was pregnant before he went back to Rome, not after she had the baby and came to visit. Oh well. Try the movie if you want, but the book is a hundred times better. Everyone has a different opinion. You can't satisfy everyone, but it was okay. Knowing me I probably will buy the video, just to scrutinize it more.

Summary: good movie
Review: i love the movie. i've got the video and watch it every chance i get. most of all i love it because i am a history buff, especially ancient roman history. but i hate it when movie producers alter what happened in real history in their movies... set the story straight for those unread people. the costumes and sets were some of the most enjoyables parts of the movie, aside from billy zane and timothy dalton (from 'Scarlett' !!). Leonor is very pretty but there is a bit to be said about her acting, though i havent seen her in much, though i could be wrong, so in time she'll definitely get better. but all in all it isnt a movie to miss. if you appreciate history and classicism this definitely is a movie to watch at least once, and even if u dont know what classicism is, still watch it!

Summary: Better than I thought it would be
Review: I heard that Cleopatra wasn't that great but I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed it even though I think it should have been longer so that it could have been more accurate. Timothy Dalton is excellent as Caeser, bring the right amount of world-weariness and dignity to the part. Billy Zane is good too as Antony - he has a lot of brooding presence. If Leonor Varela was as good an actress as she is beautiful there would not be a problem but she is not. Not that she is a bad actress - she is quite competent in the role of Cleopatra but you never believe for a moment that she is an all-powerful queen with great seductive powers. Also the real Cleopatra was not a beauty. In many recorded accounts she was described as rather plain. Her power and seductiveness was derived from her incredible charisma, not her looks. In fact the image on her coins depict an average-looking woman with a rather large nose. Hardly Leonor Varela!

But if you want a good 2 hours of escapism with great sets and costumes, lots of action and the undeniable chemistry between the two leads then Cleopatra is for you.

Summary: It was ok, but some things were left out
Review: The movie is very good. Wonderful acting, good story, esc.. But they left out some things that happened and changed some. Antony wasn't wounded in battle before he died, he killed himsef. And Cleopatra had two children with Antony. Also, her first child was killed by Octavius shortly before she killed herself. But dispite those flaws, it was still a good movie.

Summary: WORST MOVIE EVER!!!!!!!!!
Review: I found watching this version to be too much of a soap opera, than a great victory between Egypt and Rome. Timothy Dalton played a worthy Caesar and was made for the role. Billy Zane made a perfect model for Antony, but his character did not amount to much. For instances, getting drunk and showing so little valor. Leonor Valera made an alright Cleopatra, but she was so childish and was so much a drama queen, than a true potrayal of Cleopatra. Too many disputes and bombastic arguements make the history and story so unreal. And the fleet of ships looked like they were computerized. I did not like that. This film needed some fixing up.

Summary: Though not a masterpiece, a movie worth watching!
Review: Cleopatra, sheds light one of the most well known historical figures of all time.
It is a rather long movie, approximately 3 hours, but that is to be expected considering who the movie is about.

Overall, the acting is above average, with the highlights being Timothy Dalton and Billy Zane portraying Julius Caesar and the Roman General (and later Consul) Marc Anthony respectively.

On the negative side the lead actress, though attractive and revealing (well done!) was not really the best choice for Cleopatra since her acting abilities are not that great. In addition, the child playing her brother, Ptolemy, was a terrible choice; overweight with a blank/moronic look on his face.
Furthermore, the movie lacks that special something that Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton had in the 1963 film "Cleopatra" to push it over the top.

In a nutshell, though not a masterpiece, Cleopatra will surely provide for an evening's entertainment. It is a movie definitely worth watching, especially for those with a soft spot for History and all things Roman.
