Summary: Welcome to 28 Barbary Lane.
Review: The story begins with the first chapter - Tales of the city, as Mary Ann Singleton, a naïve and young lady from Cleveland falls in love with San Francisco and decides to stay. As luck would have it, she finds an apartment in an old house on Barbary Lane, where the landlady Anna Madrigal welcomes her tenants by taping homegrown joints to their doors.

The story throughout miniseries (which contains 3 chapters: "Tales of the city", "More Tales of the city" and "Further Tales of the city") revolves around the carefree and chaotic lives of tenants residing at 28 Barbary Lane. As characters are slowly unraveled we discover all the happiness, all the sadness, darkest secrets and shocking relations that will keep you laughing and reach for tissue at the same time. There is something for everyone. I have never meat anyone who watched this miniseries and did not love it. Hair, clothes, mood rings. Life so full and simple it will make you wish for it.

Summary: Still Terrific....but
Review: This DVD is promoted as "unedited." However, it is the same version as originally shown on PBS which WAS edited for language. Those replacement dubs of certain 4-letter words remain in this DVD. (When this original series was shown on Showtime a couple years ago, some scenes were shortened, but the actual 4-letter language was intact.) Why couldn't we have had it all?

Summary: Truly, this first installment delivers the goods!
Review: This first installemt from Amistad Maupin is one of his finest. The characters are endearing, honest, and real. I feel like I know these people personally. I never grow tired of watching these characters over and over again. They are like old friends- you are always glad to see them. Maupin show the complexities of life and everyone's search for true love and happiness, regardless of sexuality. My thanks go out to PBS for having the courage to make the first installement. Hopefully, a third production is not too far away.

Summary: One of the best
Review: This is one of the best series movies I have ever seen. When Mouse's boyfriend broke up I just wanted to comfort him. And at the end when I found out about Dor's secret I swear I was flabbergasted. I had never expected it. It's a must see, definately.

Summary: wonderful
Review: This is storytelling at it's best. There are so many storylines that are tied in together. I was born in 78, so I couldn't say whether or not it was a realistic representation of the era and the place, but it seems fairly realistic. There are just so many interesting characters.
Having said that, this isn'ta show for children. I love it and would certainly recommend it to otehrs

Summary: I left my heart at 28 Barbary Lane.
Review: This is the most feel good series on DVD, it is the closest thing to comfort food for your mind and heart. After seeing the first VHS tape of this series, I went out and bought all six of the Tales books. They were good reading when I went out to sea onboard USS Kitty Hawk. I even got other sailors to read them. Of course life at sea can be so boring you'd read the label on a bottle of GP cleaner. I finally saw the whole series when we returned from cruise. I got hold of a fourth generation copy of the series on VHS, since it was out of print at the time. I watched them on my duty day onboard the ship. By the last tape we had quite a crowd watching. It will be nice to finally see a quality copy of the series. I already own More and Further Tales on DVD. I would recommend this and the other series to anyone, although I feel the cast in this series was the best.

Summary: Tales of the city is the best.
Review: This movie is one of the best films going. I lived in the 70's disco era, but not in San Francisco. This film made me fill like I was back in time dancing to that disco sound. A super movie. Buy it..you won't be unhappy with it. The only other thing I can add is Christopher Sullivan's review hit the nail on the head. Way to go Chris.

Summary: Five solid hours of pure entertainment!
Review: This wonderful PBS adaptation of Armistead Maupin's "Tales of the City" is remarkably faithful to the book, a delightful look at San Francisco during the era of free-love. The cast, led by Olympia Dukakis as mysteriously quirky landlady Anna Madrigal, brings the tenants of 28 Barbary Lane to life on the small screen. Trivia buffs will undoubtedly smile when they see Thomas Gibson, better known to 90s TV fans as Greg on the television show "Dharma & Greg," as Beauchamp Day, one of the many unforgettable characters in this mini-series. It will make you laugh. It will make you cry. It will make you wish YOU were a resident of Barbary Lane. But be forewarned: At Barbary Lane, absolutely nothing is considered taboo. So grab a bowl of popcorn, Babycakes, and enjoy the ride! END
