Summary: Loved since childhood
Review: The music of West Side Story was the very first music I can ever remember loving as a child. It filled my small town boy head with dreams of the big city and indeed the big world around me.

The music truly reaches right into the heart and as I have always felt outside the norm, the song A Place For Us will always be among my very favorites.

Summary: A truly faithful adaptation of the finest musical ever
Review: Many times, when musicals are adapted onscreen, the result is cheesy and dumb (anyone seen the embarrassing movie version of "Carousel"?). But this "West Side Story" is so beautiful, and with music by Bernstein, libretto by Sondheim, and choreography by Jerome Robbins, how can you lose? This makes the "Romeo and Juliet" story fresh and heartbreaking again. It's one of my all-time favorites.

Summary: A Great movie for any age!
Review: This is the best musical of all times! The way the story unravels into a modern day Romeo and Juliet is amazing. Young and old will enjoy the wonderful songs and the vivid acting by some of the greatest actors ever. Buy It.

Summary: AN AMERICAN CLASSIC!
Review: This is everything a great movie musical should be. It is charming, intelligent, moving, funny, and contains some of the best songs ever written ("Gee Officer Krupke" is my favorite, but better known songs, such as "Tonight," "Somewhere," and "I Feel Pretty" are also handled fabulously). Jerome Robbins choreography is the best ever put on the screen, always amazing, yet never slowing down the story (as Gene Kelly's choreogaphy often does). Even the huge amount of stars having their singing voices dubbed doesn't bother me, since it is almost impossible to notice. "West Side Story" is proof that during an era in which quality musicals were getting harder to find, an occasional classic was still possible.

Summary: Famous Musical Drags Feet? What kind of lunatic is that guy?
Review: This is the best movie I have ever seen! It is so fantastic, so amazing, so perfect! I rented this movie and in 5 days I watched it 7 times. I got upset because my Mom made me go to my best friend's party and wouldn't let me watch it more than 3 times a day! No, I'm not insane, I can just recognize a good musical when I see one!!!!!!!!!!

Summary: My all time favorite
Review: This is going to be short and sweet - this movie is my all time favorite - it proves that a movie about teens & gangs can be done in good taste, without sex & swearing -- I saw this movie at the theater 3 times in 2 days back in the 60s and now have the video and my kids (24 & 25) also enjoy the movie. After watching it so many time, I still get teary eyed at the ending!!

Summary: Famous Musical Drags Feet
Review: The music and choreography are exciting. Unfortunately, everything else plods like a pack-mule on an upward trail. Very, very slow, with cinematography which was much acclaimed in its day but which now seems more than a little stagey. One star for the music, one star for the dance, and one star for an excellent cast... but the film as a whole ain't no winner.

Summary: glamour, brilliant, emotional music and choregraphy.
Review: My "cult movie", as we call it in France, since 15 years old. Seen more than 18 times, I'm always surprised, emotionaly speaking, by the beauty and the strength of choregraphy and music. I Never went to New York, but always remember the savage beauty of NY suburbs, through the Jets and Sharks struggle and competition. 2 big moments: the gorgeous imitation of sergeant Krupke by the Jets, and the emotional and vibrant garage choregraphy after the 'struggle'. Thanks to R.Wise and L.Bertsein for their emotion.

Summary: Better than the Criterion LD
Review: This is a milestone musical. In form and content sophistication it has yet to find a rival. The music and scoring of Bernstein reveal genius, a genius he did not achieve in his serious orchestral works that followed. A young Sondhiem provides the lyrics.

The DVD is the best version I have seen, and I have three previous, including the Criterion LD. The sound in surround really works this time (with DD), and the DVD minimization of red chroma-noise is essential to this musical.

Jerome Robbins' choreography, where the camera is equal to the dance, is a true wonder. You could not do anything near this level of craftsmanship on the stage.

I was only disappointed in the re-casting of Sondhiem's lyrics, particularly in 'America,' no doubt for politically-correct reasons (and for this alone you know you have an extraordinary piece of art).

Most of the music is intact from the original, but several alterations were made to simplify rhythms for the ensemble.

Just ignore the weak performances of the principals (who are always miscast in productions of West Side Story because of the incredible vocal demands).....

It is an American treasure.

Summary: The Most Brilliant Musical in The History of Cinema
Review: If you never saw West Side Story, the most brilliant musical in the history of cinema, it is a true epic indeed. Although the storyline is the same to Romeo and Juliet, the film is acted in street style and the film teaches us about prejudice and hate. The characters are memorable and the music is sensationally stunning, especially "Tonight". You must see this.
