Summary: NO CLOSED CAPTIONS????
Review: As a child, I saw the original movie series on the tv, that one had the closed captions. Without the closed captions, I understand none!!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Most Excellent
Review: This story is magnificant. I have read the book numerous times and this movie truly brings the characters and story to life. I first saw the mini-series as a child and I have always wanted it for my home collection. This movie is a must for all James Clavell fans and adventure / drama fans alike.

Summary: Arguably the best made for television movie ever made!
Review: I was never able to see the original broadcast version of this movie, so I cannot say how faithful this version is to the original. However, based on this version, I have to deem Shogun surely among the best made for television movies ever made. It is a truly epic story of adventure and intrigue set in feudal Japan. Ship's pilot-major Blackthorne is stranded in the Japans when his ship, a Dutch man-of-war licensed to raid Spanish shipping, is pursued and then destroyed in a typhoon. Made the pawn in a dangerous power struggle, all the players involved recognize Blackthorne's presence as a threat to the delicately balanced equilibrium established among the ruling warlords and among the Spanish who wish to maintain their lucrative monopoly over the Japans. Shogun is a vast, swashbuckling, magnificent tale chock-full of political intrigue, oriental-meets-european culture shock, machiavellian power plays, revenge, backstabbing, love, Samurai duels and swordplay, and, above all, HIGH ADVENTURE!

Summary: The video is not faithful to the original TV mini-series
Review: Having passionately watched the mini-series "SHOGUN" many times over, I was dissappointed, that after spending the money to buy a "complete" copy for myself, that it wasn't complete. If not cut, this expensive edition is clipped of many of of it's charming vignettes. I would gladly forgo the fancy packaging for the original version...

Summary: Good way to see the impact of two cutures
Review: The way its presented, the knowledge of two different cultures, social, religious and family make the movie interested. Besides the actuation is wonderful, every body act the way they should.

It is a great document for those who like to know more about our past, the way people behave.

Summary: The best!!!
Review: The best TV mini-series ever made. Keeps faithfully to the novel, but fills out the characters in a way that really brings the story "to life." The Japanese actors are just perfect, as are the costumes and the history. As an aside, this is based on a true story. There really was a "Blackthorne" and his impact on Japan was significant.

Summary: Do not settle for less-"Shogun" is the extreme epic!
Review: This is without a doubt the best Samurai movie ever made! I wasn't alive to see it on TV, but I couldn't have waited for the shows every night. Although this movie is long, it is never boring! If you love medieval Japan, you'll love Shogun! The only thing that beats it is the novel by James Clavell. (Also an excellent read)

Summary: Shogun - one of the best miniseries ever made
Review: Shogun the series, starring Richard Chamberlin and the legendary Toshiro Mifune is a masterpiece. What makes it so is how closely the miniseries matches the book, from the characters to the various plot twists. On top of that, one gets the same feeling the readers get by watching this series. A book with the sheer magnitude of Shogun could only be given justice in a 550 minute, five day miniseries. This will be one of the most remarkable series you have ever seen. END

Summary: It was fresh, once upon a time
Review: When this epic mini-series came out, it was awesome, over time it has faded. I'm glad it's in DVD. The book will suck you in and keep you there. It lost something in the translation from book to T.V., I would recommend reading the book first.
