The show is great, but so little effort and quality control

nobody at Mutant Enemy or Fox Home Entertainment actually
bothered to watch it.

Summary: Incredable Show, Lousy Transfer
Review: Even if all the other box sets look this bad, I will buy them. I love Buffy. However, I am quite sad to say 20th Century Fox cares less about Buffy then I do.Grainy. Grainy grainy grainy. Some scenes are sooooo bad. I know they wern't filmed on "film" until the third season but they could have dome more for the transfer. That being said, BUFFY RULES. End of story. Actually thats what matters, the story isn't hurt by the transfer, either is the acting. If you are looking for something to show off you DVD player and killer TV rig, this isn't it. If you want to see a very awsome season of TV, this is your purchase. Dave

Summary: A great season - a lousy dvd set
Review: My girlfriend and I are both huge fans of the series and we were looking forward to catching season two, as we had missed most of these episodes the first time around on TV. The episodes themselves have been great so far... season two looks like one of the best for storylines. But what is with the horrible digital transfer?? The night scenes are so grainy they look like a low quality VHS tape. The brightness levels are all over the place. Without a doubt, this is the worst quality DVD transfer I've ever seen. While I credit Fox for trying to keep the price down on the DVD set so younger fans can afford it (The X-Files sets are still ludicrously expensive), I honestly have to say if the quality is going to be this bad, I'd rather lay out more money for a better picture. Buffy's fans deserve better than this.

Summary: definitely worth getting
Review: Excellent points by many reviewers regarding 1) the quality of the DVD transfer is terrible and 2) Buffy is an entertaining series to watch. The way I look at it, for less than the price of a video game you get 6 dvd's and 22 episodes, making this a terrific bargain. It's too bad they didn't put more care into the dvd transfer process the way the producers of Star Trek: The Next Generation did. Then again, the star trek episodes cost twice as much per season on dvds. Also excellent to get. Anyways, for the fans, this season 2 is a good value. I skipped getting the first season, since only 12 episodes, but this one seems to be entertaining and a bargain, so I got it. No regrets. Besides, Buffy's cute :) The making of documentary stuff is interesting too, as usual. Worth getting.

Review: I highly recommend this box set for anyone who is even slightly interested in Buffy. The packaging is inspired, and the audio comentary from Joss Whedon is spectacular. As an avid fan of the "Scooby Gang" and the colorful demons they slay, I am pleased to say that after the show is gone, this collection will still be here to entertain...

Summary: A classic in every sense of the word
Review: Just about everyone reviewing or looking at buying this DVD set knows about the second season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. As such, reviewing the episodes almost seems a bit redundant. (I, however, will go down that road anyways.) Simply put, all 22 episodes are either classics, or contain classic moments (such as Cordelia's thoughts on tact in "Killed By Death", or the reactions by Cordelia, Buffy, and Willow to Xander in a speedo [and nothing else] in "Bad Eggs") that almost singlehandedly save the so-called "dud" episodes of Season 2. Furthermore, some events (particularly Willow's magic use, Angel's loss of his soul, Cordy's brief flirtations with Angel, Spike's obsession with the Slayer, and the doomed-to-never-happen relationship between Willow and Xander) are still hot issues at the beginning of Buffy's 7th season (and Angel 4th). The DVDs are treated very well, with an attractive CGI graveyard and stylized menus that are a major improvement over the rather drab Season 1 menus. There's still the color and grain issues, but these are again because of the film stock used during the first two seasons. Though I haven't had a chance to listen to the various commentaries, they are of course very welcome, although even more (hopefully attended by more than just one ME staff member per episode) would be nice in the future. Basically, more is better. :) The packaging is also much nicer, in part because the godawful promo photos from before season 1 have been replaced by the nicer shots made specifically for Season 2 (duh). Also, the discs themselves feature images of Willow, Xander, and Spike(?!) instead of just Buffy, making for a bit more variety visually. Basically, if you have a DVD player and like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you're pretty much guaranteed to buy this set. Casual or hardcore fan, it probably won't matter, since most of the episodes are legendary. Newer viewers (or people curious about the series) may want to buy or rent the first season set simply for the need to understand some of the situations referred to ("Witch" is mentioned at least twice, and "Teacher's Pet" is referenced many times). However, this is the set that will "seal the deal" so to speak with anyone unsure about the series. Although you'll definitely want to have a hanky, a friend to hug, and a good therapist around when you watch "Becoming", Part II. You'll probably need it. Just before cursing Joss Whedon for being *too* brilliant. :)

Summary: The Best Season Of Buffy
Review: For six years, Buffy The Vampire Slayer has been the best show on TV. Smart, Dramatic, Surprising, and most importantly, Funny, Buffy is everything that modern entertainment should be but isn't. Here we see what many fans, myself included, think of as the best season of the best show on TV. It's not hard to figure out why Season 2 is widely considered the best. Although picking an overall best season of such a spectacular show is the closest modern day equivalent to picking one's favorite Shakespeare epic, Season 2 IS the best season of Buffy simply because there was a continuity to these 22 episodes that the show never fully regained. Every season of Buffy is about a central theme. This season was perhaps the most powerful because it was about love. Yes, love is one of the most important aspects of every season of Buffy. But Season 2 is the ultimate visual metaphor for love. Every major character was in a relationship this season. Through these characters, we see love as an idea, an entity, a power, and a tool. Instead of giving my favorite eps, I like to focus on my favorite running stories. Of course, this whole season was centered around Buffy and Angel. The Greatest Love Of All Time was just so well-done by the writers and by David Boreanaz and Sarah Michelle Gellar. The love felt so natural, and so did the pain when Angel went wiggy. Really, if it wasn't for the Buffy/Angel saga, not just the love but the pain, I'm not sure this show would have even had a Season 3. It was just so delicious, Buffy and Angel making love and then so quickly having to kill each other. The two other running stories that made this year the one to remember were the Spike/Dru love and the relationship between Xander and Willow. Both relationships were so incredibly complicated and real and imperfect. Spike and Drusilla didn't have souls, yet were so human it was quite delicious to watch. Shallow viewers will say that Xander found Cordelia and Willow found Oz, when in fact we somehow just KNOW that Xander has always wanted Willow the way she wanted him. It just didn't work out that way. From their almost-kiss in When She Was Bad to Willow's breakdown over Xander and Cordy kissing in Innocence to an injured Will wanting not Xander but Oz at her side make this such a rich and deep relationship, one that will erupt in Season 3. Finally, the character growth of Giles, particularly when we find out about his Ripper past and when Jenny dies, is amazingly good. These actors and writers and directors and everyone else make this show just so good, you can't stop watching.
On to the DVD itself. I know I'm your typical Buffy freak who always wants more, but I WANT MORE! The extras were much better than the skimpy Season 1 offerings, but still not nearly satisfying enough for such a powerful and popular show. We get, quite frankly, a couple of useless commentaries by Joss Whedon, Marti Noxon, and David Greenwalt. A few interviews from Joss, a few scripts, some odd TV commercials that just feel so off (maybe commercials were made differently in 1998), a picture gallery, biographies, and three featurettes that focus on the show's makeup more than anything else. These featurettes aren't bad at all, they're actually quite informative. But, I WANT MORE! Where's the commentaries and interviews with the actors? Where's the featurettes about Buffy's characters, it's effect on pop culture, it's effect on society, the fact that it is a phenomenon? I wasn't a fan since the beginning, and I hunger to see the cast address how the show was made fun of, how it became a critic's darling, how hard it was at the beginning, when it became big. Buffy is a part of my generation. It's our Bewitched, our Dynasty, our 90210. The effect that Buffy has had on all of us should be talked about. I overlook the lack of outtakes and screen tests because back then, DVD was not a viable medium yet and I'm sure than they threw away alot of stuff. Also, the biographies use the identical info in the famous "All Buffy" issue of Entertainment Weekly. Still, the iffy extras are the only thing wrong with the DVDs of Buffy so far. The DVD creators must realize that the people who are going to be buying this DVD will either be newbies or hardcore fans, and both deserve all the extras possible. Still, I'm not complaining. Buy it, watch it, laugh, cry, smile, and relive old memories or make some new ones.

Review: The DVD's on this set are virtually unusable. There are constant errors and light/dark shifts that make the presentation ridiculous. I would rather watch the episodes done live with hand puppets than try to sit through this lousy packaging! Well, maybe they do have one use -- if you are out of clay pigeons.

Summary: GREAT Show, TERRIBLE Quality
Review: I, like other Buffy fans, bought this DVD expecting to watch again the great shows we know and love. This can be done, however the picture quality is so bad, old VHS copies off television are far superior. The video quality of the first season was great why isn't the second season? FOX probably figured we'd all buy it for the content forgetting the quality. "Make money off the hardcore fan." For the amount of money this set costs it should be so much better. The discs should be recalled and redone.
I want to know how to register a complaint with FOX. So will you if you purchase this set.
