Summary: So so movie..But very racist
Review: This movie is not a bad movie since it is from the hands of Oliver Stone and Alan Parker..But it is very racist. Can you imagine a country where all the individuals are bad people? Not seems logical to me..Exaggerated..A REPLY TO OUR FRIEND TRIANDAFILLOU WHO POSTED A MESSAGE ON FEB.20: REMEMBER YOUR COUNTRY 25 YEARS AGO? HAVE YOU SEEN COSTA GAVRAS' 'MISSING'? HE MADE THAT MOVIE TO PROTEST THE SITUATION IN HIS (AND ALSO YOUR OWN!) COUNTRY.BACK THEN,THERE WERE MANY MISSING AND TORTURE CASES IN GREECE.GO ON AND READ SOME BOOKS ON GREEK NEAR HISTORY.YOU MAY BE SURPRISED AT WHAT YOU WILL SEE!

Summary: What if....
Review: With reference to this film (and those who rate it with 5 stars, concentrating on what the prison inmate experienced, regardless to the reason why he had been put in jail) , I suggest a new film should be made in reply to a question - what if the man had not been caught in Istanbul Airport upon his departure. (Drug offense was minor- or major, so what?) A film about some youngsters buying the drugs from this guy at any price, then doing everything to find money to be able to afford the drugs on which their very existence depends, then eventually ending up in some clinics to beat up the addiction (how much they could be succesfull - that is another question) at a cost as high as (or higher then) what they have paid for this poison. Not to mention the depression, crisis and agony they bring upon themselves and their closest people, during the use of the poison and during the treatment. Imagine all desperate and ruined lives ! You do not have to be pro-Turkish, if you are logical enough , you will judge the facts without prejudice.

Summary: MERCY PLEASE
Review: Yes, everyone is entitled an opinion. This is a story or Billy Hayes who got caught trying to smuggle hash out of Turkey. Yes, he got caught and yes, he was punished. Should the punishment fit the crime? I don't think that the punishment fit the crime. I don't think that this movie was bashing any country in general. It let us know that one country's definition of crime and punishment may differ from another. Rent or buy this movie---watch it a couple of times---did the punishment fit the crime? He was initially sentenced to 5 years-his case was then reviewed 3 years later and he was sentenced to 20 years. Isn't this punishment in itself? The fact that they could "play with his sentence" and punish him for the same crime more than once. I think that Billy paid his dues by just knowing this fact. This move defines the meaning of MERCY.

Summary: Do the crime, do the time.....
Review: The problem I have with "Midnight Express" has nothing to do with the technical quality of the work or the acting ability of it's stars, I simply don't think making a "hero" out of a drug smuggler is positive entertainment, under any circumstances.

Let's face it, the man was caught breaking the law. The fact he was arrested in Turkey where the penalty for drug smuggling is more severe than in the United States was, in my view better than the alternative, which was having the drugs work their way into the hands of our children, here in the United States.

No doubt the only real influence this movie may have is on those who are considering a trip to Turkey with the idea of bringing back some drugs. This fellow should consider himself lucky he did not attempt to smuggle drugs out of Saudia Arabia. If I am not mistaken, the punishment for dealing drugs is public execution (they chop your head off).

I'm certain I will get "flamed" for this opinion, but perhaps if the United States demonstrated the same "zeal" in fighting the drug problem here at home, fewer children would would be exposed to the destructive effects drugs can have (South America...are you listening?).

Summary: Spectacular creation, but what happened to the sound?
Review: Midnight express is (by any standard) spectacular. A "must see", which grabs your attention from the very first minute, with its extraordinary sense of realism, and a good DVD image quality (dubble sided disc, for two aspect ratio's. Nice idea) But what made this movie so well known even amongs those who never got around to see it, is its famous, and highly original sound track, made very succesfull issue as LP (and the later CD). That is where the DVD dissapoints. Hard to accept, but all we get out of the speakers, is a strait Mono track, in a movie which offers one of the best in music originality.

Summary: The one star goes to Oliver Stone
Review: The film , just taken as a movie is great itself. As for the subject , these kind of things happens in every country so why only blame Turkey? The actors used in the film as Turkish authority are not Turkish which is the worst part of the movie. If you are going to make film based on a true story , you must do it properly first! This film could not have achieved its goal , no , it shows Turkey as Iran which is not. I accept that there were many things which were wrong in Turkey 20-30 years ago but the film is especiialy puts Turkey like an Arabian country , all in dust and every thing.I think Oliver Stone should put his hand on his heart and must think what he has done 25 years ago.

Summary: Great!
Review: Mignight express is a great movie. I don't thimk that it exaggerates a lot because we all know what was happening in Turkey some 20-30 years ago. If you havn't seen it buy or at least rent it.

Summary: A spellbinding, disturbing movie
Review: This was my first time seeing the movie, and I didn't read the book, although now I plan to. I found the movie fascinating and also difficult to watch for long periods. I had to leave the room a few times for several minutes before I resumed watching. I don't think I'd want to go through the horror and gut-wrenching experience of seeing it again, but I'm glad I did at least once. It was unlike anything I'd ever watched.

The reviews that dismissed the movie simply because they believe it casts a bad light on Turkey are missing the point. Is the tale true or not? It's nearly impossible to refute anyone's personal experience unless you've gone through the same thing. By the way, I was in Istanbul and other parts of Turkey last year as a tourist, and while the country is the most physically stunning I've ever seen and the individual Turks I met were kind, I didn't care for the culture and I can remember thinking I wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of authorities there.

Summary: MASTERPIECE!
Review: OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES BY DAVIS,HURT & QUAID.A PULSATING SCORE BY GIORGIO MORODER,& BRILLIANT FILMMAKING IN BOTH ALAN PARKER AND OLIVER STONE.THIS IS EASILY ONE OF THE BEST FILM MASTERPIECES IN THE HISTORY OF FILMMAKING.NOT SINCE PAPILLON (MCQUEEN)WHICH IS ALSO BASED ON ACTUAL EVENTS OR THE LATE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION HAS THERE BEEN A PRISONFILM THAT KEEPS YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT BEGINNING TO END.IF YOU LOOK AT THE FILM FROM A YOUNG ASPIRING FILMMAKERS POINT OF VIEW IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO ANYONE WITH AN OPEN MIND ON WHAT IS REAL AND WHAT IS FALSE.ALTHOUGH I DO UNDERSTAND THE NEGATIVE FEELINGS OF THE PEOPLE OF TURKEY WHEN THEY SEE THIS FILM.LIVING IN A MULTICULTURAL COUNTRY I HAVE GOTTEN TO KNOW A FEW TURKS AND THEY ARE QUITE THE OPPOSITE TO WHAT IS DEPICTED IN THE FILM.BUT THEN AGAIN THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PERFECT (HEAVEN?)PRISON IN ANY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD,WHETHER IT BE TODAY OR IN THE LATE SEVENTIES!.ALTHOUGH I DO ADMIT PARKER & STONE WERE A BIT HARSH(UNNECESSARY COURTROOM SCENE DIALECT!)IT IS ALL IN THE NAME OF MONEY.IM ALSO PRETTY SURE THAT WE ARE WISE ENOUGH TO KNOW THAT TO EVERY TRUE STORY MOVIE THERE IS ADDED MORE FICTIONAL SCENES TO ADD TO THE DRAMATIC SCORE.AN OVERALL MASTERPIECE IN FILMMAKING HISTORY!I'D GIVE IT 6 OUT OF FIVE STARS!
