Summary: Another stellar import from Korea!
Review: Sure, "The Way Home" is an overly sentimental tear-jerker, yet I absolutely loved it! The story, while predictable, really touches you deep in the heart, and it's easy to see how this went on to become one of the biggest box-office hits in Korean movie history. It's a universal story that everyone can relate to, though being a Korean certainly helps. It's also one of the funniest movies I've seen this year -- I'm still cracking up thinking about some of the scenes.

Summary: A Sweet-Natured Story About Growing Up
Review: The Way Home is a gentle and sweet Korean movie about the growing up of a spoiled, selfish, city-raised 7-year-old. His mother is single, doesn't have a job and is almost out of money. She brings Sang-woo to live with her mother for a couple of months while she puts her life back in order and finds a job. Sang-woo finds himself in an utterly different world. His grandmother is 75, bent, ancient, mute, illiterate. She's not simple-minded, but she seems to be infinitely patient. She lives in a ramshakle house on the outskirts of a tiny village way in the hills. Sang-woo refuses to adjust. He wants Kentucky Fried Chicken for supper and electronic games. He feels he's been abandoned and he's not going to give an inch. As time passes, however, he gradually begins to respond to his grandmother's unjudgmental caring.

The Way Home is essentially a two person movie. The mother shows up at the start and returns at the end. There are two village children Sang-woo meets. Because the grandmother is mute, there's not much dialogue; most of what there is comes from Sang-woo. The charm of the movie -- and it is a sweet, charming movie -- comes from the relationship which gradually changes between Sang-woo and his grandmother. The people playing the two major parts had never acted before; they do fine jobs.

This is a slight movie, but a very nice one. The DVD picture is fine.

Summary: Love like a warm blanket
Review: There is no exciting action, splendorous things in this movie,
but you'll feel deep affection between grandmother and grandson by seeing the movie.

A grandmother who lives alon in a country first meets her
grandson born in a big city. At first, he is dissatisfied with living with her for a short time, for he is unfamiliat to
surroundings of the country. Therefore he is always at his tricks to his grandmother. For example, the boy throws her shoes and complains the food which she preprares with her whole hearts.
He also denounes her awkward behavior to not understand new products. However, his gradmother never has scolded him, and she just stares at him warmly.

The movie describes the process that he gradually realizes his grandmother's true mind.
Do you wonder how to change his attitude?
Then, you try to see the movie~~!

Summary: Simply Beautiful!
Review: This is a beautifully told simple tale of a grandmother's unconditional love for her extremely "bratty" grandson. The movie unfolds nicely and you can't help but get caught up immediately into the story as you watch this westernized little brat get away with every thing but murder.

This movie reminded me of my grandmother who is from Puerto Rico. She too came home with a chicken one day! (Have to see the movie for this to make sense.)

Excellent movie BUT don't forget the Kleenex for sure :)

Summary: An overdue social essay
Review: This is a great film that breaks away from an epidemic in Korean cinema of mimicking Hollywood and pandering to violence. It also fills an extraordinary void in Korean society of penance toward grandparents, who took care of generations of children while immediate parents too readily enslaved their families with their Western ambitions.

Amazon.com incorrectly reports the following information:

Theatrical Release Date: January 1, 1967

Amazon.com also does not specify whether the film is in anamorphic widescreen format or not. This is vital in an age of HDTVs and according 16:9 aspect ratios.

Summary: Beautifully Simple
Review: This is a wonderful little movie that will move you. It is short on dialogue, but uses the beauty of the scenery and the magic of the story to change the viewer. I would recommend it to everyone! Well worth the time to read the subtitles!

Summary: Unconditional love
Review: This is a wonderful movie about real unconditional love. It is a simbolic representation of God and all the human beings. I think this cute boy, represent all of us, women and men. The old woman, the grandma, is exactly how I feel God is. She is there,I mean the gandma, present every day and she only gives love. No matter how this boy behaves, she responds only with love. To me that is God. For those that are looking for to be a good human being, to get close to God and to learn how to love unconditionally, this is a good movie to get.

Summary: From a whitey who lived in Korea
Review: This is such a great movie. Having lived in Korea for two years, I loved it for the reminders of my time there. It was a great movie to watch with friends and family who have not been to Korea as well because it gives a clear picture into the life of the old and young...and the sharp difference between the generation that grew up with war and occupation and those who have had very few hardships.

I found this movie to be very universal in its themes and a great discussion provoker. I'm guessing that even people who have not traveled or lived in Asia...and those who hate subtitles as well, would really love this movie. It's a must see!

Summary: Real and beautiful
Review: This movie is shot as if you are there...little music and many times with only sounds of footsteps and rain as the score. The deaf and mute grandmother shows her love not by voice, but by her actions which slowly cracks the little spoiled boy's shell. By feeling so much emotion just by watching a woman who doesn't say a word shows how powerful this movie is. I cried for an hour after watching this, especially replaying the last scene of farewell in my head. I could not stop wondering "what happened next?" even weeks after. True storytelling about unconditional love and a treasure of a movie.
