Summary: Exhilarating and moving; an invaluable film
Review: Hasn't anyone else commented on how moving this film is?

Let me back up and talk about the Coens' sense of humor. The opening titles say that this is a true story when it really isn't--both a joke and a stylistic choice that effects the entire movie. The subtitle to the movie is "A Thriller by Joel and Ethan Coen", and . . .

Well, it IS a thriller, and it works like one, but it works on so many more levels than that--a cliche, I know, but what I'm trying to get at is that the genius of "Fargo" is that it is a movie for pretty much anyone who has an attention span.

So . . . the way I watch it, "Fargo" is a moving meditation on human isolation, on lonliness as a part of the human condition. I think of the scene (some might think it a throwaway scene) in which the two kidnappers are holed up in their cabin, with Steve Buscemi banging on the TV, yelling "Give me a signal!" while the crazy guy has that blank look on his face and there's that wonderful slow zoom on William Macy's wife with a towel over her head and her breath fogging out through the towel. I think of the montage of Frances McDormand driving through Minneappolis by herself, sticking her head out the window yelling "HELLO?" at a fast-food-drive-in. And pretty much any of the other scenes which involve TV. But, taking after "Ulysses," it ends with a bittersweet affirmation of life.

I don't know if any of you see the movie in this light, but like I said, you don't have to see it in any particular way in order to enjoy it. For me, whenever I think of the theme music, I get goosebumps and tears in my eyes at the same time.

Summary: One of the most entertaining movies ever made
Review: If you thought the movie "Titanic" was spectacular, dont waste your money on "Fargo". "Fargo" is a quirky type of film. The acting is unreal. The word "woodchipper" will never have the same meaning. "Titanic" to me was the worst movie ever made, a low point for the human race.

Summary: A disappointment
Review: I just don't get why critics are falling all over themselves over this movie. It even got selected as one of AFI's all-time top 100 movies.

This movie, as we all know by now, is about this kidnap drama that gets botched up. It's a true story and sad to know that people died unneccessarily. But the movie itself is hardly rivetting.

The movie is really slow and the protagonist ( a pregnant cop ) travels to St. Pauls/Minneapolis and meets up with this chinese acquaintance, which to me seemed totally irrelevant to the movie at all. She was, afterall, supposed to be going there on a lead that she got.

There are some pretty macabre scenes and this movie is definitely not for those who are repulsed by the sight of blood.

But there's not an iota of suspense or thrill as the movie drags along and the suspect(s) were found, not as the result of intelligence, but merely because she (McDormond) happened to chance upon the "stolen" car (used by the thugs) while driving home to her home-town of Brainerd.

And as for the 'humor', I failed to see any humor throughout the length of the movie.

As a true story it indeed is chilling but as a movie, it fails to wake up most audiences from their slumber.

Avoid this movie.

Summary: Uhh.....
Review: Right off the bat...this movie is NOT based on a true story.

I think that is poorly written...the plot, in a word, stinks. Why does the guy hire the hitman to kidnap his wife? WHY?! There is no answer...it's very vauge. There is also a lot of stupid, irrelevant stuff in this film- like when Frances McDornman went to see her Chinese friend- that had nothing to do with the story in the big scheme of things. There was alot of stuff in this movie that didn't need to be in it. It's not suspenseful at all....the fake blood was really ,well, FAKE. I just really didn't find anything good about this movie...the plot sucked, the cinematography was so-so...the acting was...eehhhhh, okay. If you want to watch a good murder thriller type film, watch 'Slicence Of the Lambs', not this. I can't really appreicate anything in 'Fargo'.....espeically since it isn't a true story! WHAT IS THE POINT OF THIS MOVIE? The criminal doesn't even get killed in the end. I didn't enjoy this movie at all....it's just another slasher movie with no point what-so-ever and should have been left off the AFI movie 100 list.

Summary: EXCELLENT MOVIE - SEE IT A NUMBER OF TIMES
Review: I must admit that the first time I saw Fargo I hated it. After watching it again I realized that this is a brilliantly written and directed movie. I live in the northern part of the United States and Coen's portrayal of the lifestyle is very accurate(including the accents!) I can see why many people were offended by this movie- most black comedies are generally offensive!! Take it with a grain of salt and enjoy. Fargo is truely different!!

Summary: Uhh, Excuse Me ...
Review: Since the scale starts at one star, I almost gave this two. It's not the worst movie I ever saw but I can't in good conscience contribute to the high average rating it's got here.

The story and acting didn't seem too bad to me, but what pissed me off was enduring all the senseless violence in this film only to have the police lady at the end say something like, "Ain't it awful the horrible things people will do for a few dollars?"

Like we all learned some important moral lesson.

The main lesson I learned from this movie was the horrible violent "entertainment" that certain movie-makers are willing to unleash into our none-too-stable society in THEIR quest to make a few dollars.

Sorry for being out of step.

Summary: An excellent Coen Brothers offering.
Review: I was fortunate to attend Roger Ebert's film interruptus on Fargo. During the interruptus, Ebert broke down this film scene by scene and shot by shot. I really enjoyed Fargo the first time I saw it but by the end of the interruptus, I could see why so many applaud the Coen Brothers' genius.

I am quite amazed at the negative reviews here. One reviewer called the script juvenile which is quite funny since Joel Coen won an Academy Award for best screenplay with Fargo. Another reviewer said that the film was filled with useless scenes and dialog. The Coen Brothers do like to include scenes that do not directly relate to the plot but help for character development. Some of these "useless" scenes are the most memorable of the film (ex: The after-sex Tonight Show viewing.).

This is not mindless entertainment a la Ace Ventura (not that Ace Ventura is bad). Instead, this is a dark comedy that, when appreciated on a higher level, will stay with the viewer for a long time.

(By the way, it was not really based upon a true story. This is another one of the Coen Brother's practical jokes.)

Summary: Never leaves my VCR
Review: You can learn a lot from this movie. Love, hate, greed, murder...they're all explored in award-winning film by the Coen brothers. Throw in a few snowstorms, a kidnapping, a giant Paul Bunyan statue and a woodchipper and you've got a classic. William H. Macy and Frances McDormand turn in the performances of their lives, while Steve Buscemi tuly makes us believe he IS his character. The complexities of all the brilliant characters are examined and displayed with such mastery in this film. If you don't own it, get a copy fast.

Summary: Quirky
Review: I've not seen anything like "Fargo".It is a very quirky black comedy.Exceptional way of telling a true story.

The plot is about how Jerry Lundegaard(William H. Macy) planned a kidnapping scheme(of his wife) to get money from his father-in-law. However things got complicated when everything didn't went according to his plan, tragic struck and blood shed...

Frances McDormand is flawless as Marge Gunderson, a pregnant police chief in charge of this case. She's no ordinary police, she has her special ways of investigating this case. It's amazing to watch her portray. She gave a stunning and idiosyncratic performance and totally deserved her Oscar.

One of the best black comedy screenplay even written. It have all the elements which combined into a great winning formula. Classic black comedy with touches of drama,comedy,violence,suspense,etc...

All characters seem eccentric and Coen brothers did a brilliant script which filled with unexpected lines and wacky emotions and reaction by a great group of talented actors like Steve Buscemi as one of the 'funny-looking'kidnapper,William H. Macy,Peter Stormare etc.

This movie is so unpredictable and full of surprises and totally worth the time and money.
