Summary: Inhuman humans
Review: Jeremy Irons and Robert DeNiro shine in this film that tells a story of a Spanish priest, Gabriel, (Irons) and a disgraced ex-slave trader (DeNiro) who killed his own brother (!!)and Gabriel's working with with DeNiro for his pensions for his crimes, and the two building a strong friendship as they make a bunch of native South Americans into Christians. They have an unexpected adversary, as another priest visits thier mission (details escape me) and gives them trouble.

Irons and DeNiro face differences, as a battle seems imminent, as Irons trusts his faith in his god, and DeNiro, and two other brothers trust a cold, steel sword.

The music packs a BIG punch! Music always plays a big part in a film's sucsess...I think...

On the downside: Director Roland Joffe must have been fairly depressed as he made the film. Though the depressive mood fits the story only too well, Joffe COULD have put a little more humor/good times in it. If you get depressed easily this film is not for you.

On an up-ish note: The film's storyline is extremely thought provoking. I also think the scene with the little girl rummaging in a half-flooded, half-destroyed building, finding the old violin, and taking it into the boat in which she and her family and tribe were escaping in, makes a beautifully wordless statement of the effect Irons and DeNiro had on them.

Summary: A Great Movie finally on DVD
Review: This film takes us deep into 18th Century South America and serves as a heart-rending commentary on man's inhumanity to man. It is one of the best movies of all time dealing with issues of social injustice.
In 1986 this film received seven Academy Awards nominations, including Best Picture. However, it won the Oscar for Best Cinematography. The cinematography, the story, the actors, and the music should have supplied enough impetus to have this released in DVD format earlier. It stars Robert DiNiro and Jeremy Irons. Liam Neeson has a supporting role.
I am excited about the coming release of this DVD. I own the VHS version; and while it is good, you need the DVD to do this picture justice. I am looking forward to pre-ordering The Mission on DVD.

Summary: Much anticipated release!
Review: There are 3 reasons to have this much-anticipated movie on DVD.
1) An exciting yet tragic story that will make you consider man's cruel treatment of fellow human beings.
2) cintematography----Iguazú waterfalls on DVD...Awesome!
3) Morricone's soundtrack--The most sublime movie music with crystal-clear DVD sound!
This is a must have!

Summary: So good, the whole world should be able to see it.
Review: I find it hard to understand how this film has managed to score so high by many standards with out being available as a DVD in Europe. Now it is being issued as an DVD special box edition in the US and Canada only.

For years, I have been trying to get it here in the UK and nowhere in Europe seems to be in a DVD format.

Fine, I have it in VHS but the art of this film is worth preserving with the finest technology available.

I cannot accept the argument that there is not a market large enough in Europe to issue this film in a DVD format.

I would like to bring this to the attention of the high executives of Amazon. I hope I can get some guidance to acquire such a piece of Beaux Arts to share it with my family.

Kind regards,

Enrique,
Manchester, England

Summary: Should be on DVD
Review: I have owned the VHS version of The Mission for several years; can't imagine why it's not on DVD yet. Although it is an attempt to whitewash the devious, evil behavior of the Jesuits in indigenous populations beset by ignorance, it is nevertheless a beautiful work of cinematography; the opening scene is a prime example. If the rumor of an April 2003 release of a DVD version is credible, I shall be looking forward to acquisition.

Summary: Good News at last
Review: Thanks Marty for the news that The Mission will be available on DVD in April.
I suggest that the studio should also include the audio soundtrack seperately apart from the movie in the DVD so as to enable the user to play only the audio tracks if required.
Is this a technical possibility, if it is then I think that the studio should go for it as an exceptional case and I bet movie buffs would not mind shelling out that little extra for it especially as the music of this movie is heavenly and has been nominated for the Oscar.
