Summary: Inspiring and Moving
Review: One has to watch this film in it's entirety un-interrupted...taking in the beautiful cinemotography, the lush soundtrack, the fine acting, and all the detail that went into potraying the era of sword and missionary in South America...the film does have some critiques on the imperialism that went hand in hand with Christianity, but not without showing the Jesuits misionaries rising above all this to stand for the opppressed...the film touched me like no other...

Review: "Time and Wind " from Erico Verissimo

Is great (and big) novel about the story of a South Brazilian family. In its first volume, describes the life in the Jesuits missions, its conflicts with the Portuguese and Spanish people, its destruction. The novel shows also the following period, when the indians life with the new coming immigrants.

Summary: Get the soundtrack.
Review: The film is merely great; the soundtrack by Ennio Morricone is magnificent. Buy it. It's often used in trailers of other films. [Since the soundtrack is the last task in filmmaking, trailers often use music that's not in the film being previewed. Music from The Mission is used frequently.] It'll give you the willies.

Summary: The best movie I've ever seen
Review: This movie is the greatest. I was forced to watch this movie as a senior in high school. I figured it would just be another stupid history lesson. Well I was WRONG! I never forgot what it tought me. It asked me about my own life, about how I would represent myself to my fellow men during instances like these. High school was 10 years ago, and it is the only movie I have bought in my life. Watch it and learn.

Summary: good example of ethnocentrism, and a great movie
Review: this movie was great. It was fun to watch in class to learn about ethnocentrism. The acting was great, and the music was spectacular, although it got repetitive

Summary: Loved the cinematography, the score, and J. Irons
Review: This was a wonderful film, I wish I had discovered it earlier. The cinematography was superb, as was the score, and especially the performance of Jeremy Irons. He portrayed the missionary with such kindness and elegance that he would have had no difficulty converting me to anything!!I was pleasantly surprized to see Liam N. in a small role. My only criticism is the performance of DeNiro, which I feel distracts the viewer from the essential flow of this fine film.

Summary: a MUST see film
Review: this is an excellent film overlooked unrighteously by the academy and hollywood. the cinematography, the acting and especially the score are well above par of anything that has come out of tinseltown in the last 10-15 years. a great film for history students, theologians AND general audiances. a gripping story of the struggle between pacifism and aggression. pulls at your emotions and makes you question which method of defense is the right one. whatever side you come down on you will question yourself anyway. well worth the 125 minutes, rent it, or better yet, buy it today.

Summary: Great cinematography! Should have won more Oscars.
Review: The Mission is a moving story about Jesuit priests who try to convert Amerindians in South America. Irons and De Niro play strong roles. I think it should have won Best Score (Ennio Moriccone) and Best Director (Rolan Joffe) and Best Actor (Irons). The movie was so moving I almost cried when I first saw it. I don't want to spoil it by telling why, though. I recommend this movie to everyone. Other movies I would recommend: The Last Emporer, Lord of the Flies (1990), and Amistad.

Summary: It Makes History Fun
Review: I had to watch this movie for a history project and loved every minute of it. I am a fan of any work that portrays indigenous peoples as the victims they really were, and as people, not animals. This movie brought many to tears, and it also gave us a graphic realization of how much European explorers messed up a beautiful culture. But all in all, it ends on a high note.
