Summary: Joyous
Review: Amelie is quirky and eccentric, suffering from something like an autism of human warmth. Child-like and whimsical, she likes to bring happiness into the lives of others; she's like confectionary saint, trying to cheer the dispirited or rekindle the glow of childhood memories. The movie sparkles with narrative sleights of hand, visual ingenuity, and comical energy. But, ultimately what makes it truly memorable is how all of these elements converge and deepen into a blissfully sobering conclusion. A real winner.

Summary: Best Film Ever
Review: This is by far one of the most absolute best foreign films I have ever scene. Like a critic said this is the "feel good movie of the year". It's colorful, vibrant, silly and amusing. How wonderful it is. If you like the simple pleasures in life this movie would be perfect for you.

Summary: Touching...
Review: Where to begin with this brilliant film. Amelie is not just a love story. It's the story of hope, faith, and restored passion for life. As a young girl, Amelie lives in a fantasy world with no friends and cold, unfeeling parents. She grows up and becomes a creative and unique, but shy and lonely woman, who ultimately wants to do good for others and yet lacks the skills she needs to create happiness in her own life. She is sweet, selfless, and unbelievably adorable as portrayed by Audrey Tautou.

The film ties the lives of several lost souls to each other and to Amelie and shows how one person's small acts of kindness and sometimes cruelty help people find truth and finally contentment in their lives.

To top it all off, the film is visually stunning. The colors (greens, reds, blues) and cinematography alone make this film a must see! I can't say enough good things about it. It will make you weep and leave your heart full. A true feel-good movie that is never cheesy or trite. Rent it on DVD and see the director talk about the making of the film, and you'll be just as impressed as if you had seen it in the theater.

Summary: Amelie, voulez-vous couchez avec moi, je t'aime.
Review: I watched Amelie one blessed afternoon after Christmas, followed by the equally wonderful 'Belleville Redezvous'. What an inspiring afternoon! I had my faith in the creative arts rejuvenated after a dismal few years of film and music. (Can the world that gave us 'What Women Want', Charlie's Angels' and the those epitomes of bland Dido and Katie Melua really have produced talent that created such astounding movies?) The term 'charming' is often overused especially to describe the vapid, sugary-sick, brainless fare that comes out of Hollywood, but here is the real deal: a film that just oooozes charm. This movie is vibrant, funny, sad, thought-provoking and a visual treat. Don't worry about those sub-titles, you'll forget them in the first five minutes. Dive in and enjoy the first great movie of the Noughties (the second is the aforementioned 'Belleville Rendezvous'. And if you don't fall in love with Audrey Tautou your heart is a gnome's.

Summary: Quirky, fun, and charming
Review: As noted in my title, I would describe Amelie as quirky, fun, and charming. Like his wacky film Delicatessen, Jean-Pierre Jeunet has assembled a deliciously quirky sensibility that encompasses the story, characters, set design, camera work, etc. The quirkiness is occasionally surreal, but it is very fitting to the story, the mindset of the main character, and the Parisian neighborhoods that surround the story. It's hard to frown after watching this movie -- it's a feel good movie, but the emotions it evokes isn't forced or manipulative like its Hollywood brethren. In this respect, it is refreshing and lacks the vapid shallowness usually found in Hollywood flicks. Even if you don't like subtitled films, or shy away from European films, Amelie is very accessible to other audiences (e.g., American). Why? The performances are very expressive and the humor translates well. In the end, you will likely be charmed by the film and the lead actress Audrey Tautou, who is utterly delightful. Very highly recommended.

Summary: I couldn't get into 'Amelie'
Review: I couldn't get into 'Amelie'. Many of the characters were unrealistic and ridiculous. There were some cute and funny moments, but the story doesn't go anwhere. It's just a lot of random things happenning here and there.

Summary: One of the very, very, very best ever.
Review: Amelie is sweet, shy, and utterly charming - and she aspires to create happiness: she fixes peoples lives for them by rewarding good and playing tricks on the meanies of the world. With a mixture of magic and poetry, secrets and good-witch schticks, she injects all who cross her path with a bit of her well-intentioned wizardry. Then she realizes she herself is in need of some serious fixing, and the plot thickens...
Utterly wonderful, utterly delightful. And Amelie herself (ooh, those eyes!) is most irresistible of all heroines.

Summary: Cute = Meddling and Semi- Promicuous?
Review: A friend unexpectedly loaned us this film on VHS ("Here, you'll love it!"), the weather was miserable, and I had heard good things about the film, so we said, "Why not?"

After a half-hour or so of trying to watch this "cute" movie, we had an answer to, "Why not?" The answer is that "Amelie" strains to be quirky and the borderline promiscuity and beyond-R sex scenes give prime examples of superficiality and interpersonal manipulativeness. Possibly because the film is French and "arty" the mean-spirited hijinx and bed-hopping between near-strangers is forgiven. We took the tape out of the VCR, returned it to the friend, said, "No thank you", and watched a rerun of a good episode of "Law and Order". At least there, flagrant violations of social mores and rules are recognized as such. We all have different values, and this one ran completely counter to my family's.

Summary: Overrated
Review: Amelie was a big disappointment to me. The story started off very strongly and I was looking forward to seeing the rest of this film. However, after everybody telling me to watch this film, I did and thought that it is vastly overrated. Maybe, I thought this film and the main character would be 'deeper' than it was. This film is basically a film about how a boy gets to go out with a girl - as simple and as predictable as that.
