Summary: What happened?
Review: This movie was engagingly charming the first time I watched it. I thought it was cute, contrived, but well-done. Then I watched it again, and discovered something. Julia Roberts' character is a real jerk. The character I had loved the most the first time I watched it now just irritated me. Her relentless narcissism, the way she took advantage of an innocent bystander...now that I knew how things turned out, I couldn't forgive her for the way she treated Grant's character. It's just one of those movies (like "The Game") that subsequent viewings tarnish. Do yourself a favor, see this movie once, then keep its cute contrivances in memory, where they will remain charming.

Summary: Great Movie
Review: I thought that this movie was absolutely excellent. It reminded me of Pretty Woman. Julia Roberts was superb as was Hugh Grant. I recommend this movie to anyone in need of some laughs and fun.

Summary: Waste of TIme,
Review: I was thorougly dissapointed with this sad excuse for a film. Iam a huge fan of the very talented Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, whythey choose to do this sickeningly sweet and eerily UNFUNNY picture mystifies me. The plot is thorougly farmiliar. The main flaw is that the Julia Roberts character is THOROUGLY unlikeable! The film drags and drags. There is even a chase scene which rips off Nine Months. Go for classic Hugh instead.

Summary: A Fairy-Tale Romance
Review: A world-famous American movie star (Roberts)falls in love with the owner of a small London bookstore (Grant), but the relationship seems impossible. Roberts is charming as the suave, worldly movie star, and Grant shines in the role of the shy bookstore owner. The supporting cast complements the two leads to perfection and contributes greatly to the overall charm of "Notting Hill". The plot may not be entirely believable, but so what? Nobody goes to the movies to see how everyday life really is. A great escape from the real world and for 2 hours or so makes you believe that dreams and fairy-tales really could come true. A great movie!

Summary: very entertaining
Review: This film is one of Julia's best works. She and Hugh Grant display very good chemistry on screen, and make the film very enjoyable. The music in the film is perfectly placed, and the actors and actresses come off as quite believeable in all aspects. Overall, a definitely recommended movie for any occasion- an especially good date movie.

Summary: A great movie if it's your type.
Review: Well, it's obvious from the other reviews that the opinions fall to one extreme or the other - very few in the middle. I loved it, but I guess for some folks it just isn't their cup of tea. I thought there was very subtle body language between Grant and Roberts that makes for a "cute" relationship. The plot brings them together and pulls them apart, caused by miscommunication and external forces. I thought the music really added a lot to the mood, especially the scene where Grant walks down a London street during a time interval of four seasons. I can see where some would be turned off by the sugary plot, but if you're in the mood and have a preference for a cute romance, then you'll be in for a treat. On the whole, the reviewers prefer Grant's acting and many fault Roberts "boring performance," but I found her role realistic - there are people who are insecure about relationships and feel trapped in their situations, and Roberts did convey that character. The magnetism between the two was very subtle - you have to pick up on it! But it's there, and it provides a good relationship. The other characters add warmth and humor (well, Spike may well turn off some folks the first couple of times). As for the scenery, the movie does put an American audience into a foreign environment which adds to the character of the movie. Cute, cheerful, and a romantic ending - not everyone feels this - but those who do love the movie!

Summary: Truly Delightful
Review: Roberts and Grant are wonderful of course, but the rest of the cast is just as good. Sweet, charming, funny, and sometimes very moving. Especially the relationship between William's two best friends. The London locations are great.

Summary: Hill Surprises with Depth
Review: This is an incredibly enjoyable film. Unlike many other romantic comedies this one succeeds in bringing to life an entire cast of interesting characters beyond the wonderful romance story. The cast of friends has a wonderful warmth and humanity about them. I found the film witty and fresh. The DVD provides excellent bonus material including an original look at behind the scenes where Grant takes you on a tour where you meet his real parents. The deleted scenes were interesting.

Summary: Great DVD and a great romantic comedy
Review: This DVD is an example of what makes this format so special. You get an anamorphic widescreen version of the film that is crystal clear, a musical soundtrack that sounds great in Dolby Digital 5.1, and a nice array of special features. And all this at a bargain price.

Several deleted scenes are included on the disc, and at least one would have made a nice addition to the finished film. Hugh Grant's comments on the set are also fun to see, and the ability to jump right to a favorite song in the film is a useful touch.

The film itself gets better upon repeated viewing. Hugh Grant plays a role that he has patented in several previous films (Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Englishman who went up a Hill and Came Down a Mountain) of the boyishly charming romantic lead, and Julia Roberts gives a believable - and touching- performance of a Hollywood superstar who desperately wants a normal relationship, but doesn't know if that is possible.

With memorable characters sprinkled throughout the film, and the somewhat predictable, but thoroughly enjoyable (and well-done) storyline, this is a wonderful movie with which to cuddle up next to your significant other.
