Summary: This Isn't a Nightmare...It's a Dream!
Review: Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas is easily the best claymation film ever made--perhaps Burton's best. Intended for children to watch in the holiday season, it is definitely not a film that you or they will soon forget. The film is about a mythical place called Halloweentown--a terrifying land where it is Halloween all year long. Jack Skellington, a charming but lonely skeleton, is the Pumpkin King of Halloweentown. Though he enjoys being the King of Fears, he is, sadly, beginning to tire of the constant horrors. The film is, also, a very well-written musical, and on Jack's Lament, Jack sings, "Year after year, it's the same routine. I grow so weary of the sound of screams. And I, Jack, the Pumpkin King have grown so tired of the same old thing." One day, he wanders out into the forest and stumbles upon a small grove of trees with the words "Thanksgiving," "Easter," "Valentine's Day," and "Christmas" written on them. Jack, questioningly, steps into the Christmas tree and is transported to a glorious and happy land where it is Christmas every day. He is so enthralled at this that he plots to kidnap Santa and bring him to Halloweentown so he can spread some of the holiday cheer there, too. Let's just hope it has a happy ending. Burton's Nightmare is an utter masterpiece. Danny Elfman, who again collaborates on the music does an absolutely fantastic job. The music is very good, and the lyrics match perfectly: "Oh, somewhere deep inside of these bones an emptiness began to grow. The fame and praise that come year after year do nothing for these empty tears." Even the drawing and sculptures are very well done; all of the characters fit perfectly with their personalities--especially Jack Skellington, and, of course, "the thing hiding under your bed." Yeah, man. Weren't you just waiting for the Christmas movie that would frighten the kids more than if you played for them The Exorcist? This isn't a Nightmare, it's a dream!

Summary: No Nightmare to me!
Review: This is one of Burton's BEST! A classic X-Mas/Halloween flick anyone & everyone will enjoy.
This flick is about Jack, a skeleton/pumpkin king that lives in.. (DUH!) Halloween Town along with many other frightening Halloween characters.
Every Halloween it's always the same to Jack. The Halloweeners in town gather for a celebration as done in the various years. This particular year, however, Jack stumbles across Holiday Doors, and learns about Christmas. Jack, so inspired by this new & interesting place, decides to give Santa a brake for that year and turns Christmas Halloween style.
With memorable characters and songs, you'll totally LOVE this movie!!!!!!!!

Summary: Tim Burton is Creative - This Movie is Fantastic!
Review: Tim Burton (Big Fish, Edward Scissorhands, Planet of The Apes, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory) came up with the orginal story for this clever film. His imagination is amazing.

This film was actually directed by Henry Selick (James and The Giant Peach, Monkeybone)who gave the agles and sequences a great deal of life, charm and magnetism.

The story is about the man in charge of Halloween Jack Skellington (Voiced by Chris Sarandon - Fright Night, The Princess Bride) who decides to want to try and take over the Christmas Holiday.

Once he realizes what Christmas is all about he discovers that he got it all wrong. With the help of his friend Sally ( Voiced by the talented Cathrine O'Hara - Best In Show, Dick Tracey, Home Alone), he realizes his mistake just when Oogie Boogie (Voiced by Ken Page - All Dogs Go To Heaven, Torch Song Trilogy) threatens to get rid of Sally and Santa Clause himself (Voiced by Ed Ivory - Eye on the Sparrow - and he is also the SINGING voice for Oogie Boogie))

You can also hear the talents of Paul Rubens (Pee Wee Herman) as well as William Hickey and Glenn Shadix (Planet of the Apes, Multiplicity).

The music is by the incredible Danny Elfman (Chicago, Men In Black, Edward Scissorhands, Hulk, Spider-Man, Planet Of The Apes) who also does the SINGING voice for Jack Skelington. Incredible writing, lyrics and performance by him. He really is a true talent. My favorite is "What's This?"

The DVD extra's are incredible. Making the movie and watching the detail of how each character and scene is produced. Taking three years of photography alone. The Special Edition has many features, graphics and illustrations. Every home should have this one! (12-11-03)

This movie has a unique plot that can catch the eye of children, teenagers, and adults. I mean, you have to fall in love with Jack Skellington...he's just too sexy!

Summary: Good Story; Mesmorizing Detail and Special Effects/Graphics
Review: The Nightmare Before Christmas is original in every sense of the word. The story line--Halloween creatures taking over the holiday of Christmas--has, from what I know, never been carried out before. Jack Skellington is the lead character who attempts to take over Christmas. The irony of this story is that the lead villian turns out to also be a hero. That, again, is a display of sheer brilliance and creativity. And it is true -- almost everyone in our modern era loathes musicals. I do too. But there is something quite masterful and creative about the way it is presented in this film.

Although the movie is 10 years old, it will likely be quite timeless. There is nothing about the story that indicates the time period. The graphics are still of very high quality -- to the point that it is somewhat like "eye candy." I was mesmorized by the graphics. Yes, me--an adult.
