Description:

Who knew the Pacific Northwest had such a vibrant hip-hop scene? I-5 North: A Hiphopumentary, a locally produced overview (I-5 is short for Interstate 5), focuses on over 30 performers. For the most part, the spotlight is on the rap groups in and around the Seattle area, but turntablists (like the Spinovators), b-boy dance crews (Tacoma youngsters Massive Monkees), and radio/club DJs (DJ Boom Bip, the sole female) also get the chance to strut--or at least talk about--their stuff for the camera. From the evidence on view, the Northwest is full of energy and ambition, but inspiration is in somewhat shorter supply as too many of the MCs (or rappers) sound similar to each other (with the possible exception of Al Coco, whose style is closer to dancehall than hardcore). Still, I-5 North proves that the Northwest has more to offer the music world than just rock, pop, and jazz. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
