Rating: Summary: This is easily the funniest movie ever made. Review: Before I saw Vernon, I had my doubts. My friend Kevin, fresh from NYU film school, had watched it countless times with classmates, and assured me that it was a can't-miss movie if ever there was one - a heady statement, indeed. But he was right. There's a reason VERNON is a cult classic at the country's finest film school. It is the funniest movie ever made. From the maniacal turkey hunter - a character so nuanced and hilarious that he has to be real - to the old man who's convinced his turtle is a gopher, Errol Morris uncovers a gold mine of comedy in this Florida backwater burg. You'll have to watch it at least twice to catch everything, largely because your laughing and wheezing will most likely drown out some gems on first viewing. I implore: Columbia TriStar Home Video to re-release it; and you to find it, somehow. It is extraordinary. Please. See this movie. You'll understand.
Rating: Summary: there are no words to describe... Review: each time you watch vernon, florida, you have another "therefore experience". you won't know that your life has been missing these experiences untill you view this movie, but once you see it, you'll realize that "therefore experiences" are like narcotics. you just have to have more of them. anyone that has ever vacationed at the white sands missle base, anyone that has a four track mind, anyone that has ever found a van at a fair price because of a miracle from god, and anyone that has cured stomach problems with a gobbling wild turkey will truely feel right at home while watching vernon, florida. the rest of us....well....to be scientific about it....will just laugh endlessly.
Rating: Summary: Strange, disturbing, funny Review: Errol Morris ("Mr. Death," "Brief History of Time," "Fast, Cheap, & Out of Control," and other films) points his camera at the benighted residents of a rural, north Florida town. But though their quirks are different from ours, they are us. We're all benighted! A film filled with wonder and dread. Five stars! AND IT'S OUT OF PRINT! Someone out there do something.
Rating: Summary: Greatest Documentary in Film Review: Errol Morris has captured the essence of my ancestry in the piney woods of northwest Florida. A typical couple describes a trip they took from Vernon to White Sands, New Mexico. They drove straight through. There they learned that the white sand (actually gypsum) of that national park is "a growing sand." "It crawls." thus, a canning jar now half full of sand was but 1/4 full when they brought it home just a year before, and within months will be entirely full. THIS MOVIE MUST BE SEEN. I WANT TO PURCHASE IT BUT IT'S OUT OF PRINT!
Rating: Summary: Great Filmaker Review: Errol Morris is a genius and this finely crafted film is evidence of that. The fact that he typically uses only 1% of what he shoots, only heightens my respect for him and his integrity as a filmaker.
Rating: Summary: Vernon, Florida, USA Review: Errol Morris originally set out to investigate what insurance company officials called "Nub City", where the highest percentage of self-mutilating claims frauds resided. Deciding that the story wasn't what he was interested most in, he turned his camera on the people he met around town and simply let them be themselves: An old man who owns a raccoon which he believes to be a turtle. A pleasant couple who own a jar of sand they claim grows daily. A turkey hunter with near religious devotion to his sport; these and more folk, odd and not so odd. A lost classic of sorts, this is only equaled by Gates of Heaven (also by Morris) for portraits of humanity in all their weird and wonderful glory. Someone PLEASE re-release these two movies.
Rating: Summary: This is the best rural cult movie of all time! Review: Have you ever wondered what a gobbler with an eleven-inch beard looks like. You will. Vernon, Florida is a documentary masterpiece of backwoods weirdness. This is Errol Morris' first feature film and by far his best. Others include: "The Gates of Heaven," "Thin Blue Line" and "A Brief History of Time." Unfortunately, this video is out of print, but don't let it discourage you. Find a copy any way you can and watch this movie -- if only to see the eleven-inch beard of a Florida gobbler. "You hear that flap flap sound? Them's breaking. Ooh wee, that gives me the turkey fever!"
Rating: Summary: It's A Crime For This To Be Out-Of-Print Review: I agree whole-heartedly that this has to be re-released. Tosee "Vernon", I had to pay [additional] deposit to rent it (because of its status as out-of-print). After watching "Vernon", I would have gladly exchanged the deposit for the tape. This Errol Morris documentary is in my list of top three funniest films ever. There are so many great moments (only in fifty-five minutes)...The whole film is a highlight. Hopefully, it will be released on DVD and include additional footage; my only complaint is that the film is too short.
