Summary: Not one of Stan Lee's best interviews....
Review: It is very laughable the way the interviews were conducted here. Smith sounds like a 30 year old kid, talking with Stan Lee in much the same way, a shy child asks Santa what they want for the holidays. The comic book store background also looks bad, it seems that Marvel's characters have moved beyound the comics pages to the big screen, so it is the DVD's of those successful Marvel movies where Stan is being interviewed which are more applicable now, and leave the geeks like Smith far behind.

Summary: Update.....
Review: It's amazing how quickly friendships and business relationships can change 180 degrees in the opposite direction. Only a year after Stan did this movie, he announced that he was sueing Marvel over the way they have not paid him the copyrights royalities for his charecters at Marvel, this is somewhat misleading because he has made more then a comfortable living off of Marvel and it's charecters for nearly 50 years now. While this looks like it will be settled in court very soon, Stan has had a major falling out with the current comics editors at Marvel in terms of current stories and how they are being done. He is not on the best of speaking terms with Kevin Smith either, and it seems Stan is now spending more time over at DC Comics and is in talks of doing more projects with them. Despite this, he continues to write the Spider-Man newspaper strip and supports the Marvel Movie Projects being developed by Avi Arad.

Summary: Simply great...
Review: Let it be known that this DVD is NOT just for comic book fans. Stan Lee is an amazing man with a gift for storytelling. As a writer I found this DVD quite unbelievable - the evolution of characters, the use of continuing stories, giving the audience characters they can relate/identify with. And, I never knew that Stan Lee was 40 years old(!) when he created Spiderman.
This is a very special and unique DVD. I highly recommend it.

Summary: like a 20/20 for Stan "the Man"
Review: Marvel fans have been waiting for something like this. Stan Lee, in a sit-down interview, 20/20-style, telling about his life, his love and his work. And instead of Barbara Walters, we get the much-more-worthy Kevin Smith shooting the questions.
Stan is very candid and honest and really draws the viewer in with his histories, insight and commentaries. Smith asks the questions that fans want answers to, and plenty that most of us wouldn't have thought to ask, including the issues of co-creatorship, genesis of ideas and generalities about the beginnings of Marvel.

Stan Lee is as interesting a personality as anyone could ask for - he is proud of his body of work and views it very earnestly and in context.

The DVD has plenty of extras, most of which are pretty short and sweet. The interview with Joan Lee (Stan's wife) is AWESOME and gives a great perspective on him as a person, and Stan's poem recital is excellent.

A great DVD for comic fans that want to learn about a legend.

Summary: Great Disc from the Man of Ideas about the House of Ideas
Review: On the surface, this disc looks like the definitive history of the silver age of Marvel comics (their major push into the exploding superhero genre in the early 1960s) from the man who helped create it, Stan Lee. Although it does show many insights into the creation of such things as the Marvel Bullpen, regular Letter columns, and the creation of Marvel fan clubs, the disc suffers some from the shift in focus from Spider-Man to the other Marvel heroes.

While the first segment featured a great, in-depth look at Spider-Man (cue the synergy for the new movie), the second segment, highlighting other interesting Marvel characters, seemed a little thin on the information side by comparison. Both the Hulk (new movie in the summer of 2003) and the X-Men (second movie in preproduction now) are merely skimmed over. I know that this is being picky but I was left wanting the same type of coverage that was given to Spider-Man for the other characters.

As far as the hosts, Stan Lee is gregarious as usual, exhibiting great old-world charm and genuine warmth. He's like a favorite grandfather or uncle, telling all of his tales of adventure back in the day. Kevin Smith, known for his works in film as well as writing comic books himself, reflects his love and knowledge of the industry as he leads Stan The Man down Memory Lane. And Mr. Smith's expressions of seriousness, when listening to Lee's responses, are quite funny, whether they were intentional or not. Hopefully, if this disc generates enough interest, there will be an on-going series to highlight other Marvel characters when their respective movies will be coming out (like Daredevil, Hulk, and Fantastic Four).

Overall, this DVD was an excellent purchase and offers the viewer a window of accessibility to both the interviewer and interviewee that could only be found attending a panel at comic convention but in the privacy of your own home.

Summary: Stan "The Man" Lee - 'Nuf Said!!!!
Review: Stan "The Man" Lee was the mastermind behind some of the greatest comic book heroes of all time, and a pioneer in comic book story telling. The legacy that Mr. Lee has created at Marvel Comics has withstood the test of time. Without a doubt, his creative genius was the foremost inspiration behind the popularity and growth of the entire industry. I've always been a huge fan of Marvel Comics and I can say it was a real treat to watch this interview of Mr. Lee, whom I admire and have so much respect for. He has brought me untold hours of entertainment throughout my life, creating the foundation of my love for comic books. Thank you Stan Lee. The DVD also has some special features, including a bonus interview with Mr. Lee's wife and a narrated poem written by him. Both of these alone are worth the price of the DVD.

Summary: COMIC BOOK LITE
Review: Stan is the Man, but..

Kevin Smith provides more fan appreciation than inside conversation.

Fans expecting a hardcore documentary will not get it here, but they will get a nice sit down interview with Stan Lee.

No great insights abound here, mainly because Stan is a charming guy - and he isn't about to dish the real goods on the industry. He remains the peerless diplomat. What you get is Stan the Man in conversation, but not Stan the self-introspective creator.

This complements Stan's book bioraphy well - which provides slightly more detail about Stan's life. I didn't learn that much about Stan and his work here, but it's fine to watch nonetheless.
